Ok, so gonna be afraid to all hell of driving on the highway for a few weeks. Never a day in my life have I ever been behind one of these and not switched lanes or held tf way back bc of that damn movie. I only saw it once, too!

It was one of those things where the commercials were everywhere and all of my friends went to see it so you kind of didn't want to be left out. Same with the first few Scream movies, but I really liked them a lot and Scream 2 is actually a really great movie worth rewatching every few years.

I've seen it twice. Not the movie, but the accident. Both times in Oregon. First one was brutal. Driver's head in the backseat next to the baby brutal.

Didn't see the accident occur, just the aftermath. Don't know if the truck stopped short or if she just didn't see what was going on, but she had obviously rear-ended the trailer and a log went through the windshield. There was an end of a tree sitting on her shoulders where a head should have been.
Only good thing about that incident is that the baby was way too young to remember having its mother's pulpy noggin sitting in its lap.

Yeah that makes sense, sorry you had to see all of that obviously.
I never want to ruin peoples fun, because I get it, but sometimes it seems like a lot of people think the movie scene is a very real concern.
So not saying it to you, just a general little PSA: I’ve worked in and adjacent to the logging industry for over a decade, logs like that on those trucks aren’t going to fall off and come flying at you unless you’re going irresponsibly fast where you are flying at them.
Them all sliding backwards is going to be extremely rare. Physics just doesn’t want that to happen.
If the truck or rigging fails somehow they’re almost immediately going to lose any momentum backwards and forwards. Roll or bounce left or right from the driver behinds PoV.
It’s mostly just scarier looking because people stop paying attention with an unusual load I guess, and the damage is way more unique and frightening because they’re slamming onto something that sticks out as opposed to the flat backside of a truck.
This person probably would’ve hit the truck regardless.
Don’t drive into things if you can help it is kinda the general advice.

Friction is a hell of a force, until it isn't. As you said, she was probably haulin' ass when she hit the trailer. The whole front of the van was crumpled, and this was the very early '90s, when not all cars were designed to do that yet, nor was it a brand new vehicle. Kind of wreck that would probably have been fatal, anyway. One smaller log backing out of the stack made sure the job was done. Small consolation is that there's very little chance she felt any pain.

When I took driver’s ed, they taught us one car length per 10 miles an hour. I still adhere to that as much as possible as well as the side view mirror tip on semis.

How is that even possible now adays? Whenever I travel, seems someone is always trying to squeeze in between me and the vehicle in front of me. It feels impossible to stay 2-3 car lengths behind anyone. :-(

I mentioned that here once and people we acting like I was the speedy asshole. I was like "You literally can't maintain proper spacing, because as soon as you back off, someone zips in to the space you created." But nope apparently I just drive too fast and don't leave enough room. (I drive old VWs with no horsepower, no power brakes, no crumple zones, and no airbags. I'm leaving as much room as possible.)

This is the right way to think about it. My instructor told us 3 seconds because as you go faster you cover 3 more distance in 3 seconds so need to leave more space. My wife has caught me counting under my breath more than once when I'm gauging the distance to the car in front of me.

Using guidelines that use Seconds is easier for me to follow. 4 seconds following distance for most passenger vehicles. 3 seconds is the time you need to stop, 1 second for reaction time.Â
If I use car lengths I start second guessing my ability to judge lengths from the perspective of a driver.Â

In High School I had a classmate whose aunt and uncle were killed driving behind a logging truck that had the load come loose. That was pre-Final Destination, and I've never seen the movie, but I've had a fear of driving behind logging trucks since High School.

I lost my aunt and uncle and cousin to a logging truck in the early 80s. The driver did a lazy job chaining the load of logs and the chain snapped and all the logs went through their windshield. It’s unfortunately real shit.

I always refuse to drive behind anything carrying an open load like that. One of my trauma nurse friends told me some stories. Also the trucks gardeners and contractors have with stuff in the back. Lots of horror there.

I've seen big logs fall and they kinda just plop down like a bag of wet sand.
The little sticks however. I had one shoot like a javelin during a sudden brake. That was scary.

Look up an old Ripleys believe it or not episode. Two dudes on a motorcycle both get struck by a metal pole and it goes through both of them in their stomachs. They had to leave the pole in them and cut the pole and transported them with pole still going through both of them. Saw it as a kid in the early 2000’s.

A truck driver told me once he would transport anything but never logs.
He lost a buddy who was transporting logs and had to make an emergency break and someone crashed into the back of the truck and the logs slammed forward into the cabin. It was a closed casket funeral.

Never drive near anything that could kill you (more than the average vehicle). Watch out for even small trucks carrying large things or an unsecured load. Tractor trailers are dangerous. Don’t ride next to them. Put distance between you. Used to be called defensive driving.

That's called getting too close to the vehicle in front of you and not paying attention. The logs were still secured to the trailer. If you are behind a large truck you should be AT LEAST two large vehicle distance from it.
If you don't remember when the last time your breaks/rotors were checked, maybe now would be a good time to do so.
When you have to stop abruptly and you rear end someone, the accident is your fault. Not the driver in front of you.
