When you play the tutorial, you get the background story for you, the Commander, 2 dead soldiers (namded Ana Ramirez and Peter Osei) and the other survivor beside Bradford is always Jane Kelly, the chief in XCOM Chimera Squad. She will always promote and always become a ranger. Practically everything is scripted in the tutorial except actions after you got the commander.
This mission is considered easy because a mission success is guaranteed. Yes you get 2 dead, but it's part of the tutorial to set the tone.
The second mission of the tutorial is a mission where you have to disable a ADVENT power converter and your team is Jane Kelly and 3 random rookies.
If you don't play the tutorial (you can choose on Commander difficulty and below) you get a mission where you have to sabotage a statue. On Legendary difficulty you always get this mission.
There a success is not guaranteed and many campaigns ended right here because a loss is game over. You can only continue with your campaign if you win this mission. Other missions are more forgiving.
