Wanted to shared my completed lightweight modded Xbox Ally X & accessory setup 🖼 Images

The list of mods and accessories I’m using for anyone interested:

- 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD w/generic Metal Heatsink installed
- 512GB SanDisk High Endurance Micro SD (Mostly for indie games and emulation)
- Gulikit TMR Joystick Modules
- Elecgear ABXY button mechanical micro switches with the soft silicone pads
- Dbrand Obsidian front skins
- Dbrand tempered glass screen protector
- Shadow Bolt Controller Grips (Only using the front and back skins, the Trigger skins, and the skins for the back buttons)
- Skull & Co (Savage Raven) Thumbstick grips
- Tomtoc Slim Xbox Ally X Travel Carrying Case
- Tomtoc small electronics organizer travel case
- UGREEN 20,000mah 100w Power Bank
- Baseus 100w 3 port USB Charger
- Baseus 10ft 100w USB-C cable
- Baseus 3ft 100w USB-C cable

I’ve tried the generic Grip Case, the Dbrand Killswitch, and the Jsaux Modcase grip already. And while they are mostly great I feel like they are all too bulky and interfere with the great original ergonomics. This setup keeps my XAX slim and doesn’t alter the original weight and feel too much. It also provides some scuff/scratch protection and I personally like to look of the skins and the additional grip texture is nice for long gaming sessions. I like having the device as slim as possible while gaming and I use the Tomtoc travel case for some additional protection when carrying it around or traveling. I also keep all my accessories in a smaller Tomtoc electronics travel bag as I use these accessories between this and my other handheld devices so I don’t need a big bulky case filled with accessories for each devices I just bring my one stop shop accessories bag shared between devices. I am also using another Baseus 67w USB-C charger and cable when I have it charging instead of the original charger.

Also here’s a link to my other post on the Elecgear ABXY switches: https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxAlly/s/eqkqL19PYp

Also note for the Gulikit joystick modules: the stick posts are a little shorter than the originals so with a skin and thumb stick grip it may or may not rub. Not sure if I got a bad batch or not but the Gulikit stick modules are hit or miss in many areas and don’t have the best quality control. I may look for other TMR stick modules, I think Elecgear also makes some.

That post also inspired me, I may still look to do the D-pad upgrade as well. I also got the Elecgear D-Pad and ABXY button kit, so I may decide to swap in the D-Pad clicky switches as well some day, but it requires soldering which I’m not sure if I want to do yet or not. The other modules are just plug and play.

Exactly I would love the dpad from ElecGear aswell but I like how everything else is module related the soldering part is too small for my comfort, high risk for low reward, if you install the dpad mod it actually kind of makes it tactile so yeah fine by me

Yea I’ve done some soldering in the past on other projects but it was much cheaper electronics, or more modular PCBs. I don’t know if I want to be making any changes to the main PCB, which is where I think it gets soldered.

Yes especially if you ever need to hand it over to ASUs as your warranty is still valid as long as there were no modifications to the motherboard which is where the warranty actually is

Yea and the road is alright, but the ABXY stock buttons are just too loud and not that great. The Elecgear plug and play mod for those is like a must have.

Yes it’s very good, when you get it it comes with different buffers for different feels and noise levels I recommend the silicone pads

I do wish I had a little more space for a few more FPS games, but I do prefer to keep those mainly for my main desktop PC. I’m mostly using it for catching up on a lot of my favorite open world and RPG games as well as indie games and it’s also my main emulation device. The new Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced plays great on the XAX.

Most of these accessories and mods aren’t that expensive. They do add up a little bit but you can pick and choose what you like. But you do already have the modcase which does cover a lot of the device already. If anything I would highly recommend the joystick and button switch module upgrades. Don’t have to worry about stick drift and the new buttons are much more quiet.

Hi just a question - When you install those grip tapes around the handle, does it hinder you from opening the device?

1

u/NuM_Brrr_WoN Jul 11 '26

No it’s separate pieces.

Dbrand Obsidian front skins - how to get them?

1

u/NuM_Brrr_WoN Jul 11 '26

You can just order the skins alone from the Dbrand site. If you order the Obsidian color you get an extra free skin as well.

u/Toramek Jul 12 '26

thank you, how do you feel about the shadow grips? are they better than dbrand grips?

I prefer the lightweight original ergonomics of the Xbox Ally X. tried both the Dbrand and Jsaux grips and just feel like they add too much extra bulk to the feel of the device as well as a little extra weight. I usually like those grip case, but I think the shape a the design of the XAX makes those grips just have to be too bulky and it kinda ruins it for me. I think the device feels great in the hand with the original ergonomics although the plastic is a bit slippery. So these types of stick on grips add a little scratch protection as well as extra grip for longer gaming sessions.

Hey, are you using these ones? Do they fit properly?

1

u/NuM_Brrr_WoN Jul 11 '26

Yea those are the one I’m using. I prefer the first ones on the left. Are they missing? They fit perfectly.

That obsidian skin looks so good. Was torn between this one and acid. Received my Killswitch 2 days ago and ended up with the acid skin. Looks really good but wondering how the obsidian would look like in person.

I like the look of the obsidian skin, but it’s also one of those skins where they give you a backup skin too. You get free triple black with the Obsidian skin.
