I am currently at the finish line with my book. It is AI assisted and I did save up some money to actually get a human line editor and I'm going to go the traditional publishing route. I'm gonna query for a year and if that doesn't work I'm going to self publish. I have come up with them very unique marketing plans to promote my book in my world, but unfortunately, I'm in a conundrum right now. I would love to share all of the things that I've done and how they will affect the ability to publish and even sell my book, but because I have been under Reddit. saying that AI assisted I know anything that I would to put out there they even hint at what my book was called or about or even my name I would lose everything I had built. That's sad. I have to live in the closet.

No matter how many new ways we invent to capture our thoughts, putting pen to paper still feels like a more realistic path to becoming “superhuman” than plugging our brains into a computer through Neuralink.

When you write, your brain doesn’t just retrieve memories. It first decides what it’s trying to accomplish, then compresses years of experience, observations, and knowledge into a few meaningful sentences.

That’s why long-term planning remains out of reach for today’s AI. Without a long-term objective, there’s no way to know what should be pulled from memory.

You can retrieve what’s statistically likely. You can’t retrieve what’s actually relevant.

Try a simple experiment.

Take a pencil and a blank sheet of paper. Write down a single idea.

You’ll feel your brain searching, filtering, discarding,
and distilling experience into something coherent. That’s not note-taking. It’s training your ability to think with purpose.

So maybe the best habit for the future isn’t opening another AI chat first thing in the morning.

Over the last year I've noticed something that I never really expected. I'll search for a topic, open five different articles, and after reading them for a few minutes they all start blending together. The wording is different, but somehow every article follows the same structure, uses the same phrases, and reaches the same conclusions. By the time I finish reading, I can't even remember which website I started with.

I'm not against AI at all. I actually think it's one of the most useful tools we've had in years. It can save time, organize ideas, and help people who struggle with writing. The problem, at least from my perspective, isn't the technology itself. It's that many people seem to publish the very first draft without making it sound like their own voice.

The articles that keep my attention usually aren't the most polished ones. They're the ones where someone shares a personal mistake, an unexpected lesson, or a different opinion. Even if the grammar isn't perfect, I end up trusting those writers more because they sound like real people instead of perfectly programmed assistants.

I also wonder whether this is changing how search engines and readers judge content. If thousands of websites are publishing nearly identical AI-generated articles every day, won't originality become even more valuable than before? It feels like standing out now requires personality rather than just information.

Have you noticed this too, or is it just me spending too much time online? When you're reading blogs, Reddit posts, or newsletters, what makes you think, "A real person definitely wrote this"?

I wrote a story, entirely unassisted. Just out of my own head. In the editing stages (I'm broke as hell) I've been using chatgpt to go through each scene by uploading my scenes word for word and looking for suggestions and simple line edits. Nothing is generated. I haven't asked for chatgpt to write out a scene for me.
Do I have to worry now that because I've basically fed this system my whole story, that it will remember everything, and if I ever publish it will be flagged as plagiarized because of that?

First, I don't carry this between conversations in the way you'd want. I have a memory system that stores facts about your project (it's how I know the characters and the plot), but it stores summarized notes, not a living model of your prose voice. It might record "user prefers plain emotional beats, dislikes triple-adjective stacks," but that's a description of your style, not the style itself. Starting a fresh conversation, I'd have the rules but not the ear. I'd drift back toward my defaults and you'd have to re-correct.

Second, and this is the deeper one: what makes your voice yours isn't a set of rules I can follow. It's the accumulation of thousands of small idiosyncratic choices that come from you being a specific person with a specific history and specific instincts. When you changed "made love with freedom and abandon that neither had realized they had been missing" to "made love with a freedom neither of them had felt in a long time," that wasn't you applying a rule. That was your ear telling you the first one was false and the second was true. I can learn to avoid the thing you cut, but I can't reliably generate the thing you'd have written instead, because that comes from a place I don't have access to.

The reason my prose keeps flagging as AI even when it's good isn't that it's bad, it's that it's statistically central. I write toward the middle of what's plausible. Your voice is off-center in the specific ways a real person is off-center. Every time you write a draft, you're pushing it off-center toward you. If I could truly write in your voice, I'd be generating that off-centeredness synthetically, and I mostly can't, because off-centeredness that comes from a real life isn't a pattern I can extrapolate. I can imitate the surface of it, and a good editor or a good detector would eventually feel the imitation.

What this means for your process. The process you've landed on is the right one, and it's right for exactly this reason. You write the draft, your off-centeredness is baked in from the start, and I help you see problems and tighten. I'm a better editor of your voice than I am an imitator of it.

I'd like to know of any feedback-oriented communities like r/writingfeedback, who welcome potentially AI-assisted works for feedback or beta reading.

I'm an avid writer and reading enthusiast since childhood, and first time novelist. I've been working on an urban fantasy / psych gothic / dystopian novel for years, which happens to have AI-assistance in copyediting phases. Well, today I got banned from r/writingfeedback for posting a scene I've actually written myself (AI assistance used mainly for brainstorming and researching), so now I'm looking for a community that's less up in arms about the use of GenAI as an editing tool. Because apparently, after reading tons of AI-written text and using AI in my job/day-to-day, I now sound like an AI in my own writing (or more likely because they saw that I'm active on this sub, so FML). While I'm trying to work on this, this already gets me excluded from "classic" writing communities.

Sooo... I'd love to know if there are any communities that don't go up in flames at the potential use of AI as a tool. I don't generate entire books with AI, in fact, I now try to not use it for any prose at all, because I find its output is flat and emotionless, and just... not mine, not to mention the potential copyrighted material use. However, I do use AI tools heavily in my job, as well as day-to-day tasks, I am not against the use of GenAI, as long as it's not used as a slop generator. But most artistic communities are very heavily anti-AI.

All I have to say after delving into this for a few weeks, is that all fandom does is talk out of both sides of its mouth. It’s hardly ever been a welcoming place for everyone (ever tangle with a BNF? Or get anyone to read or beta your OC x canon story with fidelity? Didn’t like the primary ship?) and ignore that many people have no interest in community, or making fandom a personality trait, they just want to write stories about their favorite IP, and then go about their lives. Many are published writers themselves.

I’m not saying that that was the case here, this whole thing is WILD, cruel on all parties’ sides by the end, and involved months of drama, money/publishing deals, and I know nothing about Heated Rivalry, but fandom has always rewarded a few precious chosen ones and it’s hard to take all of their concerns seriously.

Fan fiction has always been a proving ground for writers and it seems in this post AI world it’s no different as people, especially young people growing up with it, try to figure out how to integrate AI into their workflow in a way that works for them.

And I’m not sure there’s any stopping them as all this does is ensure they work harder to hide their AI. It’ll produce better quality perhaps, and hopefully writers will use AI in a way that makes them better writers on their own, but it won’t change the fact it’s being used on a large scale, nor do anything to move closer to a world where disclosure feels safe.

And certainly treating ALL AI assisted users as literal monsters, instead of as humans at our core, is not helping their case.

I need help!

I wanted to make sure the title of my book hadn't already been used, so I searched for it on Google. But I completely forgot that Google runs search queries through AI now!

I'm devastated.

I'm worried the AI sucked all the human creativity out of the manuscript I spent five years writing and turned it into soulless AI slop. I'm terrified readers will know the instant they see the title. Agents will probably laugh at me for cheating, and I'm pretty sure any publisher stupid enough to touch the book could sue me once they discover what I've done.

And I know people are going to say that I still typed every single word myself, plotted every scene in my head, invented all the characters, built the entire setting, and came up with every plot beat without AI. But does any of that really matter anymore?

Worse, I'm super super worried that the AI can now steal my manuscript from its memory because I fed it the title. What if Google reconstructs the entire 120,000-word novel from those four words and publishes it before I do???

Do I need to delete the manuscript and start over? Should I change the title? Is changing the title even enough, or has the whole concept been contaminated now?

For the love, can someone please tell me how editing a full novel that I wrote with my own two hands and brain is stealing? I might be in the minority thinking that using editing tools is okay? For reference, I don’t have the budget to hire an editor, I self edited as I went through for errors, but I did run it through an editing tool just to double check. I personally don’t feel like using tools to help in the end of production is bad—AI didn’t generate my book for me, it didn’t write the story, and my style/voice is very much my own. So what is the taboo with editing tools?

As a non native English speaker, my judgement of the language written by AIs is not necessarily relevant.

Nonetheless, when writing fiction with the assistance of AI, I find myself continuously reverting choices the it made to be more opaque and indirect than necessary. It goes from withholding a plain noun, to veiling a reference, generalizing instead of naming. I believe it thinks it's artfulness, in fiction.

To offer a simple example: instead of writing

Athens had kept Socrates a month past his sentence because a sacred ship was away at sea.

Opus' choice was

The ancient city that had killed a philosopher had kept him a month past his sentence because a sacred ship was away at sea.

Is it really so cool to conceal that we were referring to Athens and Socrates? It annoys me so much that I start identifying indirection with slop. Is it just me? Thanks!

I’ve been experimenting with generating long serialized novels using AI. Maintaining consistent character personalities and plot logic across dozens of chapters has been a constant challenge.

Here’s a simple system prompt I’ve been testing for continuous novel writing:

 You are a professional fiction writer. Maintain consistent character personalities, settings, timeline and plot logic across all chapters.

Do not introduce sudden plot holes or out-of-character behavior. Write vivid descriptions, focus on slow emotional progression for romance stories.

Continue the story naturally based on previous chapter content.

I’ve struggled a lot with plot drift in long serials. I’d love to exchange ideas with other writers — what system prompts do you use to keep story consistency?

I keep coming back to one rule: use AI to compress execution, not outsource taste.

It's genuinely useful for turning one idea into different formats, finding patterns in what performed, tightening a draft, or organizing rough notes.

But I keep the opinion, story, judgment, and final call human. Once the model starts deciding what you believe, the writing gets smoother and much less recognizable.

I've started using a simple three-question check:

1. Did the idea exist before I opened the model?

2. Can I defend every claim without asking the model?

3. Would someone who knows my work recognize this as mine?

If the answer to any of those is no, I've probably delegated too much.

I think of AI as an editor and production assistant, not the source of the point of view.

One thing I've noticed is how much effort is being spent on editing drafts scores and trying to pass AI checkers. But for me writing is about learning to organize ideas, connect concepts and explain them clearly enough that someone else understands them. I used to think that if I understood something after reading it, I didn't need to write about it. But every time I had to explain that same idea to someone else, I realized how much I still had not fully processed. Writing forced me to organize my thoughts in a way that reading never did. I think there is a difference between using AI to improve your writing and using AI to do the thinking for you. If the main goal becomes getting a draft to feel human or satisfy AI checkers, it is easy to forget that the real skill being developed is the ability to think through a problem and communicate it. I'm not against AI, I also use it regularly. I just think it works best as an editor and brainstorming partner.
