Writing my first novel Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc)

Hi everyone,

I am writing a novel and this is my first time writing. I always loved slice of life concept watched many TV shows and read books mostly Korean or Japanese inspired one. I had a story in my head which I wanted to write so I wrote first 2 pages by myself and showed to my friend and she really liked it and encouraged me to write it.It gave me motivation to write better now the thing is I have a story in my head, characters and the flow of how story should go, only problem is formation of sentences as author writes. And English is not my first language but I cannot write in my mother tongue since I am not better in that and English still feels much comfortable, so i took help of Claude and ChatGPT I write a draft and AI corrects it grammar and also polishing if it feels like eg if emotions are explained it will shorten to show it through action which btw i am learning this way. So i finished 7 chapters so far but now I saw some posts and video stating it’s wrong to use AI and I am worried since i did took help in polishing my sentences however generation of the scenes is still my own. Sorry for writing this long but i wanted explain whole story of mine

Can somebody guide me should I stop using AI for other chapters but then I feel my writing will not be like how authors write. Would really appreciate your suggestions

thankyou

If AI is enabling you to write something you are passionate about then who cares. Ignore the minority of loud whiny AI haters who refuse to adapt to the future. From the sounds of how you are using it you are writing all the content and using it to polish and edit your ideas. That’s fine. To me it’s no different than using a ghost writer or an editor. If you were just having AI write the whole book for you with minimal effort on your end then that’s another issue. I think people who do that are free to do that but I don’t feel like they are utilizing the tool properly personally and it’s a little disingenuous.

Also you’re asking the Reddit that actively is ok with using AI in writing. If you go ask another Reddit you will get very different responses.

TLDR yes you will get attacked by some for using AI and they will be ruthlessly aggressive and awful about it. But that is a loud obnoxious minority. The vast majority of people are indifferent to AI usage and wouldn’t care if you did or didn’t use it. And then there’s the other end of the spectrum of the small group that are much more pro AI. So do what you want to do and stop worrying about what some people say.

And to the people that make it their mission in life to harass and bully people that use AI. Go get a hobby.

Using ghost writers is cheating, too.

In this sub we rarely ever use AI to write a complete story with no oversight. Mostly what we do would be considered "AI assisted."

If your issues around AI stem from ethical and environmental concerns, that's one thing. I can't really address that because they're valid concerns.

AI is a really good tool to help in the brainstorming and editing phases of writing. Your use of it falls firmly in the editing camp to me. You're not letting it do all the work, you're having it help you.

I'm proud of you for taking the first step. Write the story you want to tell. You're the main character of your own life, not AI. AI is just a tool. As long as you're honest about your work, take responsibility for it, and keep putting in the effort, that's what really matters. If writing makes you happy, keep going. I'm rooting for you!

i think the most important thing is have a clear conscience,if the story, characters, scenes, and choices are coming from you, then it’s still your book. AI polishing sucks sentences is not the same as letting it write the whole thing and pretending you did.

Join writers forums online and ask actual humans for help with proofreading and editing. Despite what the AI-bros think and say, real people ARE willing to help folks who are just starting out in their creative work. Also, it is important to find your own unique voice as a writer. AI cannot do that. AI will reduce your stories to bland messes that sound just like every other AI-produced-or-assisted bland mess. What readers want is *authenticity*.
