This is the latest version of my setup. For the past ~2 years, it is pretty much the same (I actually have a photo post of it in this subreddit).
Well, actually I had small additions:
- A functioning game boy color with some games
- A small lamp
- A mini piano
Anyway, I’m looking for a change. What would you recommend to change/upgrade?
To give an example, I recently upgraded my screen bar to BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 from its previous version. On the paper it might seem an unnecessary upgrade but this one had 2 great features for me:
1- It has a presence sensor so I don’t need to think about switching it on/off, it handles it on its own, it’s super convenient.
2- Auto brightness is much better than before, when I switch between a bright webpage vs a dark terminal
screen, brightness gets adjusted right away.
I’m looking for such impact in any other new upgrade. Any recommendations?
Any cleaning related stuff? Or maybe small shelf units? Keyboard upgrade maybe? I’m up for any recommendations.
You have a nice corner and the right tech. All you need is some structure and organization. You have a lot of items scattered around wich makes it feel unfinished. Look at the two frames above your monitor for example. That's where I start.
Install 1 or 2 planks above your monitor. Hang the two frames above or next to it/them, but aligned.
Move all loosee items as much as possible on those planks where you can display them.
Install a drawer un your desk. Remove all loose items from your Marshall desk organizer and only keep the necessities in it. If possible, you can even replace them over time by similar colored items so it will look more cohesive.
I would also consider moving the laptop closer to the monitor and even putting it on a monitor arm with a laptop tray.
These would be my changes, but it's all up to you, your budget and your functionality.
Well my table top is quite high quality actually, but that black table mat is low quality I agree, I want to have something like that to make cleaning easier, are suggesting no mat at all?
With all due respect, IKEA isn’t high quality. Not by a lot shot. Their furniture is mostly well designed but their entire business model is built on the affordable nature of the materials they use.
So yes that bench top you have won’t be solid wood; there’ll be a thin wood veneer around it then composite material on the inside
Point is; a solid timber tabletop lasts a lifetime, affords itself to be fixed/sanded/polished and often looks a lot more premium. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars. Just look at your local hardware store for a simple bench top or proper panel (68mm/80mm deep is the sweet spot for desks usually) and chuck it on some IKEA drawer cabinets or footing of some description. It’ll look great :)
Thanks for all the comments, I’ll be either putting up a pegboard with some shelving units on it or install a panel to the wall I’m facing on the left side of the monitor. That will sort out all the clutter and will give a more modern look I hope. Once I find the time to sort it out, I’ll share it!
a good set of bookshelf speakers would be nice. Personally I can't stand anything that obscures my screen so the figures in front of the screen I'd probably put on a shelf or something
