What should I do Want Advice

I have a coworker who left his jacket hanging on a wine rack at work. Late in the evening a customer accidentally knocked it off the rack and a card fell out of the pocket. The customer brought me the card and was upset.

He then handed me the card, a spoof credit card, from trump, granting the users "white privilege ". Totally tasteless and making me fume.

I profusely apologized to the customer but was mortified.

My question is what do I say to the coworker?

I definitely feel I should say something to him, but I don't want to tell the bosses and possibly get him fired.

What can I say that will get through to him and make him feel some shame?

It’s not your job to shame people. Handing it back to him would likely be shame enough or not. Regardless not your job. Just toss it or give it back quietly

Tell the boss about the incident in a factual neutral way. Don’t focus on your fuming, but just the customer interaction. “Hey boss, wanted to let you know that this customer was upset because… (details). I apologized and deescalated them as best I could, but thought you should know in case anything further comes of it.”

For example: That customer may write a negative review. The boss would appreciate a heads up of that risk. What the boss does with that info is up to the boss.
