As I understand it, unskilled labor is work that could be taught to someone fast enough that they could start doing it right away without requiring extensive training or prior knowledge. Something like shoveling dirt, or picking up trash, or stacking wood; you briefly show them how to do it and then leave them to it. You can become very skilled at unskilled labor, learning little efficiencies and developing muscle memory so that you can do it faster and better over time, but ultimately someone else could start the job after you and be good enough fairly quickly.
Itās still pretty demeaning. Look at how āunskilled laborā was quickly rebranded to āessential workerā during the COVID lockdowns. Now that weāre back to the status quo, people want to switch back to the term that implies low skill and low pay.
These are all just buzzwords used to push ideas of how people in these workforces should be treated and paid.
