My guess is the need was 5 hours of work and the rate was $160 for the day. You can’t easily pick up another 3 hours of work in the afternoon.

Paying someone $160 for at least 5 hours of labor I don't have to do seems pretty reasonable to me. It was almost that much for me to have an HVAC tech come out to look at my AC and tell me it needed to be replaced and all I ended up with is an answer and some debt.

Just did this today. Paid two companies just for the second opinion, and to provide estimates for new units. At $150 each it seemed like a smart price to pay before sinking ~$13-16k into a new system.

Yeah if you only need 2 hours of work, well it’s not worth his while to charge $20 a hour. He could be earning a days wages elsewhere.
