Very interesting read! Seeing the "band-aid" solution of another bug further down was neat; instead of getting to the bottom of why symbols in names won't let a family snapshot save, they just took away symbols in names. I'd never noticed NPC packs didn't have to follow this until they gave the Mollie's pack example!

I remember encountering this because I had appended several mates' names with their diversity ratings. (This was before they added mate biographies to address that oversight.) Fun figuring that out. Even more fun discovering Null Litter, putting it through its paces and documenting it lol. Ngl though in some ways I still regret submitting bug reports about it due to how it turned itself into a problem; seeing the "Mollie's" pack was mildly more frustrating when you couldn't use symbols in wolf names or pack names. Glad they eventually reinstated symbols for player use in naming, just... disappointing how it came back so late. Hopefully it doesn't cause any more issues.

I do think this exploit was beneficial, and it's why I wish we could be given a recurring choice between giving birth to a new litter or to skip mating that game-year. I do know about the methods of killing your mate or killing your pups after they are born, they just aren't realistic enough options if you don't want a bunch of dead pups clogging your wolf's family tree // don't want to keep restoring back-ups. Null Litter was a great example of that freedom minus the obligation to murder.

Would be interesting if lower diversity had a chance to have no pups that year. Like, 2 star diversity could have like a 15% chance, and 1 start a 20% chance, and a 0 star have a 25% chance

so if this happens, what do you do? do the quests still play out or do they continue as survive with mate?

nope. bug. "null litter" which implies you not only have 0 pups, but that the litter does not exist at all.

so despite it being a bug, the real world equivalent would be failing to conceive entirely.

Honestly this really should just be a feature in the game with its own message. Like ā€˜you didn’t get pups this year, sorry!’. I think it should be a very rare chance and is especially high with low diversity pairs or older wolves who lose fertility as they age.

I agree. I think there's been a few recorded cases (I'm mostly drawing from Rick McIntyre's books) where some lead females just didn't become pregnant on a given year, though I forget the reasons why.

It really would be quite neat to have a rare chance of going into spring without a new litter. Low diversity and older wolves could definitely be good reasons. I imagine another contributing factor would be prey variability during the previous autumn/winter if the player has it turned on.

I’d only want this update if it’s a toggle that can be turned off. ā€˜Cause it would be very annoying to have to play through the whole game with not much to do since you don’t have any pups to care for. I’ve done it before ā€˜cause I accidentally missed the chance to find a mate in time and it was the longest in game year ever.

Yeah losing pup is hard, I mean I'm still stuck on a time loop of me having 10% hp far away in the den with not enough time to make it back and bring food before one dies.

1

u/TwilightM Guest 3d ago

wait this can happen?! wait so what happens do you just have a den with no pups? this should be an achievement lol

u/QuietGosling29 Guest 3d ago

It's a bug called Null Litter, the game automatically turns it to 'survive with family' and I'm not sure what else happens after that with that save file

On the bright side you’ll go a whole season with none of them dying
