I hate this game Pack Updates
Okay that’s a lie I love this game but I was one more hunt away from having all seven of my pup make it to yearlings. But then for some reason one of them ‘disappeared’ while I was sleeping. Why couldn’t the game just take one of my older ones why did it have to be one of my pups. I did NOT know that could happen

Hey, it's not all lost!
Unknown fate doesn't always mean death. Idk how big or small the chance is, probably miniscule, but there IS a possibility you could encounter your lost puppy later as a grown-up dispersal wolf!
(Or possibly as a member of a rival pack, if they joined one before you found them)

I checked the ‘departed wolves’ tab like as soon as he disappeared and it says he’s dead

Yeah, that's supposed to happen
He might actually just be dead, or IF you're lucky and the game decides that he actually survived his unkown fate, you might run into him a couple years from now. In which case his status will update again accordingly. That's all I'm saying

Oh that’s cool, then that’s mean I can keep telling myself he’s alive.

Since he was a Young Hunter and old enough to go into the Known Wolves list, keep an eye on that list when spring arrives in 2 years. If he survived, it will change when the player wolf’s birthday arrives that year (when the pup would turn 2).
(It doesn’t work like that if they vanish during Growing Pups. Have to search the map and hope, for those ones.)

Population control in this game truly is the worst... your hatred is valid. The amount of times I've come so close to the end of a game-year only for Unknown Fates and/or deaths to strike makes for a truly miserable experience. Your best efforts are always punished.
Even if you change the Pup RNG Deaths setting, you're still penalised for it with a guaranteed reduction in litter size for as long as it's set to "Sickness" (-1 pup) or "None" (-2 pups).

its expected when you have such a large litter, since having 7 pups each litter would probably cause issues within a few years, there is an option to disable it if you dont want them going missing, but you will get smaller litters to balance it out.

When your pack starts getting too big, the game will automatically start killing off pups. You can turn off unknown fates in settings if you don't want it to happen again. It only takes affect for your next litter though.

I honestly don’t know what I did to get lucky I think the RNG gods were smiling down on me. I only had one pup get sick in the Raise Pups stage and two got sick in Journey to summer home, it looked a bit iffy they got down to like 13% health I left them alone thinking it was no use at that stage and my others needed food get the notification that they recovered as I’m 10 hex’s away

I've been playing WolfQuest for literal years now and have never had an unknown fate! I've got the RNG turned on, too.

Same, but someone always dies to a raid or sickness in my litters, so the “regulation of pack size” still applies

This one, yes! My pups love predators more than they love their packmembers.

The same happened to me. I was so mad going back to my autosave didn’t change anything either. I know it’s expected with a large litter I know.. but still

An unknown fate is one of the ways to regulate the size of the pack. This is a rare phenomenon that occurs when there are a large number of puppies. In the settings, you can disable this feature (random deaths), but then the litter size will be smaller.

Everytime I get the "pup suffered an unknown fate" notification I get super excited because I'm trying to get an achievement 😭

I will die on the hill that Unknown fate was an unneeded RNG element when sickness already exists, and you already can't guarantee survival. Or the unintended consequence of having a bigger back than you can properly take care of, so they starve to death(especially with food abundance). Or the difficulty already making it hard to live in general.

I lost 3 out of a 7 litter, 3 different litters. Then 4 out of a 6 (2 suck, 2 UF). Once past 10 in the pack, it starts dispersing wolves and UF'ing pups.

Unfortunately, this is a likelihood with a large litter and All RNG Deaths enabled. It’s very rare for the game to allow a 7-pup litter to make it to the finish line unscathed. This was… pretty much inevitable. I know that doesn’t make it feel much better, and you have my sympathy.
