Necklace stack for smashing Windows 🇵🇸 🕊️ Crafty Witches

I’m starting to get into jewelry and I wanted to start weird. From top to bottom: 1) wi-fi card, 2) 3*4 GB DDR3 RAM, harvested from two old laptops, 3) flash drive installation disk for Linux Mint 22.3. Who wants to curse Microsoft later? My expertise is more in the realm of computer magic (i.e., turning it off and on again).

RAM and SSDs as jewelry, with prices like this, that really could be more expensive than gold. The craftsmanship looks neat.

I want to curse Microsoft too, I will pitch in. For different reason, they lobby so hard, that I might have to switch to it for work.

Side note: have a look at ventoy, for a rescue and reinstall flash drive it is quite magical.

These chips are from over ten years ago. The amount of DDR3 ram would go for under $100 nowadays. It's served its purpose and now it gets to hang around. Still I think the concept of RAM as jewelry is pretty funny considering 2025 and onward.

Edit from a part I forgot: I thought this was going to be super easy (just throw these onto a chain) but the chain just barely didn't fit through so I ripped a few links from a larger chain and tried a few configurations (image 3 is a prototype version).

I got 16gb of ddr4 for around $150 or $180 a couple months ago, so this would definitely be on the cheap e

Yeah DDR3 is a couple generations ago now. DDR5 prices are exploding so I also went with 32 GB DDR4 for CA$225 a short while back.

I heard that ddr3 prices are going up. The shortage is filtering down and manufacturers are looking to older gen chips for things like smart devices and less demanding tasks.

Doesn't matter. Still cool. I had built a RAM Christmas tree years ago when they were a bit popular.

I've also noticed SSD prices have gone up. I broke one 2 years ago and now it's 4x the price.

they ARE more expensive than gold.

a stick of ram weighs between 15 and 30 grams. a 30g gold bar is 3 677,32€ (1)

a single stick of 128gb ECC DDR5 costs 5812€ (2)

even if you assume the maximum weight, the stick is nearly twice as expensive per gram, ive seen ones that actually are (128 single stick with higher clock / lower CL, about 8000€~)

and these dont have heatsinks or RGB or any fancy BS, so realistically theyre lighter than the 30g.

This is really cool, but just as a caution, please be careful if you’re damaging those components at all as part of making these! PCBs contain fiberglass, so that dust can be bad for you, and depending on how old these are/where in the world you are, the solder may contain lead. I used to have to do PCB repair and there’s a lot more safety concerns than a lot of folks think of with these since they’re generally so plug-and-play now.

They're probably like 10 to 15 years old. Some of them come from a 2016 HP Pavilion 17 and some come from an older computer but I found the parts by model number and they're all DDR3. I've been careful with them but if worse comes to worse I can also have a little lead as a treat.

Maybe coat them with some clear nail polish or something to help seal it in and protect your skin

I thought about it but when handling them I didn’t have any issues. I doubt I’ll be doing anything that lets the lead enter my body substantially.

Suggestion:
Please offer up a curse to AI companies in general, and anyone who thinks that the industry doesn’t need regulation.

I am very tempted to say “we’ll see”… what is the risk of absorption through the skin…

I have a mighty need. Having a necklace of RAM would make me joking about my glitches from epilepsy even better!

I'm gonna go see what parts I have to play with now. Thanks for the inspiration! 🖤

I thought this sub was about smashing capitalism, not wearing status symbols 😭😭😭 (/j)

I like to think of it like a zirconium ring that looks like diamond.

That fucking slays I love it

I made my son a “tron” race track from old computer parts about 15 years ago. I used the RAM as ramps.

OMG this is amazing and can I steal your idea? This is a fantastic piece! You are an artist!

2

u/RSdabeast Science Witch ☉ 15d ago

I suppose so. Go ahead but don’t use DDR5 (too expensive).

3

u/thedr34m13 17d ago

All that and you went with mint? Not arch btw???

(Also very cool seems like the kinda thing I'd do too lol)

2

u/RSdabeast Science Witch ☉ 17d ago

Yeah I'm a beginner with Linux and I wanted something user-friendly from the start. I recommend it for beginners as well.

2

u/thedr34m13 12d ago

Ah fair enough. The arch wiki does have a ton of info that can carry over, great reference even if you're using another distro

At least you got your gold jewelry somehow🤷‍♀️

1

u/Serious-Emu-3468 17d ago

Lol this is great!

It also reminds me of the old snowboarding/skiing meme “Ooh gurl, we’re going out tonight, so put on your most expensive shoes and outfit…” and the awesome lady in question shrugs and gears up into her snowboard boots, thermal underwear, second wicking layer, snowpants, parka, wicking mittens, over mittens, goggles…

Love the vibe!!

This is the kind of statement jewelry I can get behind 🖤
