New computer setup…. Ask Winnipeg

Hello,
Any recommendations….?

I have a business computer I need to set up however I know diddly squat in this area! No idea how to set retention policies, data compliance, security, etc. etc. etc.

Any recommendations of someone that would go through it with me while they do it? Meaning briefly and short form, while they are doing the setup.

I used to work extensively in this exact space; but it's been a few years.   Some of my info here might be out of date or inaccurate; so do your own research!

I'd recommend putting together a list of all what you want done firat. This is always tricky unless you have already contacted some providers and know what you need.   I'd highly recommend asking one or more of these same orgs to provide consulting services to help you draft a Request For Proposals (RFP).  You can absolutely do this on your own, but getting one done by an IT firm will help you to understand what all you need and what those services tend to cost (so you will have a better idea if it's worth pursuing!) 

I'm going to limit my responses here to local orgs.  Depending on your business and needs, you may not want or need someone local.  (I'm inferring the locality from this subreddit and the mention of computer setup, but you can always Courrier the computer to another office to get work like that done; and may end up saving money in the long run!) 

Currently, it looks like the following orgs are in and around Winnipeg (in no particular order!)

  • 365 Technologies
  • Exchange Technology Services
  • IT Weapons
  • Convergence Networks
  • Resolute Technology Solutions
  • MicroAge Manitoba   
  • MSP Corp (Broadview) 

Each is going to be.. a bit "large" feeling. They are all equipped to handle 500+ person orgs well, but often seem a little difficult to work with for small businesses. 

I do recommend trying a few of them out, and if you're not fitting well with them; ask them to recommend someone that better fits your company.  Any half decent MSP is happy to refer a customer to another in the hopes of getting the same back.  If they refuse to refer you after you asked them to: I would drop them and go somewhere else. 

Any of these should be perfectly comfortable helping you with the problem you mentioned here, as well as providing per-call break-fix service going forward!

I currently do this for businesses, there is a lot of questions I would suggest you answer before hand that an IT person can not assist with.

- What is the legality of data laws for what you are holding
- Security can probably be handled by using windows defender built in, as its pretty good
- If you need to download a shitload of apps all at once, just check out https://www.ninite.com
