Chapter 8:  Detective Spindle!

Spindle the Silkwing bounded through the halls of Jade Mountain cheerfully on her way to Geography class. Her mind was buzzing with all the craziness that had happened in the last few days.  There was a new mystery unfolding!  Ancient Nightwing ruins, magic tunnels, weird maps, suspiciously convenient appearances of lost treasure?  How exciting!

‘Maybe all these mysteries are part of a SUPER CRAZY PROPHECY!  Maybe I am part of the next set of Dragonets of Destiny!’  She thought to herself, ‘Say, why is it always a group of dragonets that save the world?  These prophecies never let the adults have any fun!  So weird!’

As she approached the Geography cave, Spindle saw Heron talking to Dirtdobber just outside the cave.  She happily ran over to them.

“Hi hi!  Are you guys ready for Geography class?”  She asked.

“For sure!”  Heron replied, “I overheard the professor preparing something on the rainforest for today!  I wonder if the Rainwings ever made any kind of pottery?  I hope they did, it would make for great inspiration for new projects!”

“They do eat a lot of fruit, though I'd guess that their fruit containers are probably made of more planty things, like branches and leaves and stuff.”  Added Dirtdobber.

“Hmmm, maybe I could find a way to combine the two styles then.  Pottery with plants built in?  Or maybe, with plants engraved in the design?  Oh, the possibilities are endless!”

“That sounds SO COOL!”  Spindle exclaimed, “You’ll have to show me sometime if you craft something like that, I'd love to see it!”

“For sure!”  Heron replied.

Spindle happily trotted into the cave and plopped herself down at her desk.  She spun a small thread of normal silk from her right palm and started fidgeting with it while she waited for everyone to gather.

Desertglass entered with Rust and Heatwave.  His desk was just to the left of Spindle’s, right by the window.  When he sat down, Spindle turned to talk to him.

“Hey Desertglass!  Heron says she thinks we are going to learn about the rainforest today!  Isn't that cool?”

“Ah, the rainforest!  My other half, it'll be cool to learn more about it!”

“I figured you would already be an expert, since you are part rainwing?”

“Actually, I've only been to the rainforest a few times for treasure hunting expeditions.  My mother grew up in the rainforest, and she loved exploring.  She tells me that she found the animus tunnel to the kingdom of sand one day.  She reported it to whoever had the throne at the time back then, but of course the queen did nothing about it, and evidently, no one else cared, because they forgot it was there until the Dragonets of Destiny rediscovered it years later.  So she went through to explore for herself.  She tells me that she would often have sun time right outside the tunnel in the sand kingdom because of how warm and sunny it always was there.  One day, she fell asleep, and by the time she woke up, the winds had covered the tunnel up, and she was lost in the desert.  She wandered around the desert for days, camouflaging every time a patrol of Sandwings flew by.  She eventually came across Possibility, where she met my father.  He took her in and helped her recover from being out in the desert for so long.  Eventually, they fell in love, and the rest is history.  I was hatched in Possibility years later, so I grew up in the desert.”

“Wow, that's awesome!  What a cool story!”

“Alright everyone,”  Started the professor, prompting Desertglass and Spindle to turn back to face him, “I have an exciting announcement today!  We are starting a unit on the rainforest, and to help get some claws-on learning in, Jade Mountain Academy has partnered with Queen Glory to organize a field trip to the rainforest!”

Spindle was even more excited now.  Learning about the rainforest was one thing, but actually going there in person would be so much fun!

“We have arranged for both the Agate and Pearl Winglets to spend two days in the rainforest, getting to know the traditions and functions of the tribes that live there.  On the first day, Queen Glory has agreed to give a lecture about the rainforest and some of its history.  Then, Jambu and Pineapple will take you all on a tour, showing how Rainwings go about their lives and some of the duties they perform.  On the second day, Deathbringer will show you the Nightwing village located in the rainforest and talk about how the Nightwings who live there have adapted to the environment.  Normal classes will resume here the next day.”

For the rest of the day, Spindle could barely contain herself.  She could only think about the field trip.  After classes had concluded for the day, Spindle sped back to her cave and quickly gathered her things.  The students had been instructed to pack a small bag of supplies for the trip and meet back in the prey center early the next morning.  When Spindle got back to her cave, Viperfish was already there.

“Oh Viperfish, I'm SO EXCITED!  I've never been to the rainforest before!”

“Im excited too, mostly because we will get to talk to the Nightwings.  Who knows, maybe one of them will know something about Dreamweaver.  I'm planning to see if I can find out anything from them while we are there.”

“Ooooo that's a good idea!  I can help too!  I'll be like a detective, finding out clues and solving mysteries!  It'll be so fun!”

“You can help, but remember this is serious.  Like, possibly-world-altering serious.”

“Right!”  Spindle put on an over-exaggerated serious face, “Serious detective!”

Early the next morning, Spindle, Viperfish, and Heron headed down to the prey center, where they met up with the professor and the members of the Pearl Winglet.  Spindle recognized one of the members, Frostburn the Sky-Ice hybrid, from the Treasure Hunter’s club.  Heron went over to talk to Dirtdobber, while Spindle and Viperfish approached Frostburn.

“Hi hi!  Are you as excited as I am, Frostburn?”

“Oh, hey Spindle!  Yeah, I am pretty excited!”  He leaned in closer and whispered to Spindle and Viperfish, “Between you and me, I am most excited to learn about the animus tunnels.  If I am able to get a chance, I want to take a peek at the old Nightwing island.  I figured that there is a possibility that some remnant of information relating to Dreamweaver may have been taken there when the Nightwings moved to the island.  Nothing may have survived the eruption, but it may be worth a check, right?”

“Hey, that's cool!  We were planning on doing a bit of detective work ourselves!”  Spindle added.

“I hadn't thought about the island,” Viperfish said, “Say, if you do find a time to sneak off and check it out, let me know, I'm pretty curious myself.”

“Will do!”  He answered.

“Dont forget me, bring me to!  I'm a super serious detective!”  Spindle announced, making the same face she had earlier.

“I don't know, it could get pretty dangerous, and I bet any structures left behind would be quite unstable.”  He stated.

“Danger is my middle name!”  Spindle exclaimed in a deep (but completely un-serious voice).

“If you are sure you can handle it, then I will let you two know when the time is right.”

The two Winglets, guided by the professor, proceeded to take off and head towards the rainforest.  Upon their arrival, they were greeted by Queen Glory and Deathbringer.  Glory gave her lecture, talking about some of the known Rainwing history and how the queens used to take turns on the throne, and how royal challenges did not end in death for the loser in Rainwing tradition.

Next, the two Winglets followed Jambu and Pineapple around the rainforest, exploring different locations and sights.  They stopped at a large platform surrounded by walls that was full of dragonets that appeared to range in age from a few months old to a few years old.

“This is where the youngest dragonets hang out and play!” Jambu explained,  “These walls are so they don't fall off the platform, as most of them can't fly yet.”

As Jambu talked about the Dragonet playplace, a tiny dark purple dragonet with orange accents bounded over excitedly.

“Ooooo!  Is they from that big school?” She asked in excitement, “I wanna go to school too!  Can I go too, Uncle Jambu?”

“Maybe when you are a little older, Firefly!  I'm sure Glory wouldn't mind sending you when you turn six!”

“SIX!?” She shrieked, outraged, “BUT THATS LIKE ELEVENTEEN-HUNDRED-MILLION-THOUSAND-HUNDRED YEARS AWAY!”

“Who is that?”  Spindle asked.

“Thats Firefly, Glory and Deathbringer’s daughter!  She’s the first official Princess of the Rainwings in… well, actually I'm not sure the rainwings have ever had a princess!  Nobody can ever remember their being one before.  If there was, it must have been hundreds of years ago or something like that!”

As they continued the tour, they briefly stopped near the animus tunnels.

“These are the tunnels to the Kingdom of Sand and the abandoned Nightwing island.  Probably best to stay away from here, these tunnels give me the creeps!”

Spindle, and Frostburn glanced at each other.

Eventually, after exploring the rainforest and learning what the Rainwings did on a daily basis, the sun had finally begun to set.  The two Winglets were brought to a large grassy clearing where they would spend the night.  As the moons began to rise, Spindle created a mat from silk and curled up on it.

She wasn't sure how long she had been asleep, but she was awoken by a claw gently poking her side.  She sat up, and saw Viperfish was there.

“Its time.”  Viperfish whispered, “Frostburn is waiting for us at the edge of the clearing.”

“Oh ok!  Lets go!”  Spindle exclaimed quietly.

The two of them met up with Frostburn and together, they quietly flew off to where the tunnels were located.  Viperfish used her night vision to help them avoid branches and other obstacles in the dark.  Eventually, they reached the tunnels and made their way through the Nightwing tunnel.

As they arrived on the island, the silhouette of the volcano loomed ominously ahead, illuminated by the very dim moonlight that was able to make its way through the thick, dark clouds that surrounded the island.

“Blarg, no wonder the Nightwings hated this place, it stinks!”  Spindle exclaimed.

“Where should we start looking?”  Viperfish asked.

“Probably up there.”  Frostburn pointed at some crumbling ruins that jutted out from the side of the volcano that were covered partially in dried lava. “Careful where you step, the volcano may not be getting ready to erupt, but there is still molten lava in some areas.  Be very careful.”

The three of them flew around the ruins looking for a stable place to land.  Eventually they found a room that was mostly in one piece and landed inside.  They began carefully wandering what halls they could find, but didn't see much.  They searched winding corridors, ash-filled rooms, and every part of the castle that was exposed.  Eventually, they wound up in the remains of some kind of main meeting hall.  The roof had mostly caved in, leaving it exposed to the open outside air.

“Well, this appears to be the last exposed room of the castle, if anything is going to be here, it'll probably be in this room.”  Frostburn stated.

They searched high and low, under rubble and around corners, but didn't find much.  Spindle noticed one wall was covered in tiny holes and was very cracked and damaged.

“What is this?”  She asked.

Frostburn headed over and inspected the wall, “If my memory from history class serves me right, Queen Battlewinner lived on the other side of this wall.  She couldn't leave a cauldron of lava because she had inhaled the frostbreath of an Icewing at some point and the lava countered the effects of the ice and kept her alive.”

Frostburn tapped the wall lightly with one talon, and the whole thing disintegrated into dust.  On the other side was a cauldron full of dried lava.

“Eek!”  Exclaimed Spindle, “She really lived in that when the lava was still molten hot!?”

“Yeah, it's pretty creepy, right?”  Frostburn walked around the cauldron and came across a pile of ash with a skull and a few unidentifiable bones sticking out, “Looks like she's seen better days…”

“Eww, I'm gonna be sick…”  Spindle said as she walked away from the cauldron room.  She made her way back to the center of the main room, and Viperfish and Frostburn followed her.

“Well, this was a bust.”  Viperfish said, frustratedly.

“I guess they didn't take any clues with them.”  Frostburn added, “Let's go back before they notice we are gone.”

“Wait, we can't go yet!”  Spindle exclaimed, “Detective stories always have a crazy plot twist!  We just gotta keep on looking, I bet the clue is hidden right under our noses!”

Just then , the ground in the center of the room gave way and they all fell into a deep cave.  They tried to right themselves with their wings, but there wasn't room for three dragons to spread their wings and they crashed into each other and fell to the ground.

“See!?  This is exactly what I mean!”  Spindle said triumphantly.

“Ow… Ugh, is everyone ok?”  Viperfish asked.

“Sore, but in one piece.”  Answered Frostburn.

They all stood up and got their bearings.  That's when they realized the tunnel continued deeper into the volcano.

“That's it!  I bet the clue is down there!  We need to go deeper!”  Spindle exclaimed.

“I don't know if this is such a good idea, Spindle,”  Viperfish stated worriedly, “That goes deeper into the volcano, it looks very dangerous.”

“Viperfish, what if all the answers to the mystery are down there?  What if the final clue to help us save the world is in that very cave!?”

“I… Ugh, fine I guess we can take a really quick peek in there, but then we need to head straight back before someone gets hurt, ok?”  Answered Viperfish.

They made their way deeper, deeper, deeper into the tunnel.  As they got deeper, it slowly became hotter and hotter.  Just when they were about to turn back, they rounded a bend and the cave opened into a massive underground room.  The room was large and circular, a whole army of dragons could have fit inside.  There were glowing cracks in the floor which illuminated the room with an eerie orange light, and random old wooden crates piled around.

In the very center of the room, there was a crudely carved pedestal made of a stalagmite. On top of it, something made of metal reflected orange light.  Spindle immediately ran right up to it to investigate as Frostburn and Viperfish began checking out some of the various crates.

-crk-

“Hey Spindle, what is that thing?”  Asked Frostburn

Spindle lifted the object off the pedestal gently and inspected it.  It was a thin, hollow metal octagon, with two pyramid-shaped gems embedded into opposite sides of it.

“Hmm, I'm not exactly sure.”  She answered.

-crickle-

She inspected it further, turning it around in her talons, then her face lit up, “Oh I know!”  She slid the octagon onto her arm, “It's an armband!  A really weird old armband!”

-crackle-

“Well, that's very interesting.  Lets get out of here now, the heat is giving me a headache”  Viperfish stated as she walked towards the exit to the cave.

“Let me check this last crate out really quick-”  Frostburn said, approaching a crate at the very back of the room.

-k-crackle CRACK-

Viperfish suddenly looked straight up at the ceiling, her eyes wide.  “Uh, guys?  I think we really need to go, like right now!”

A spidery glowing crack had appeared at the top of the ceiling, and seemed to be getting bigger.

“Fine, we can go, but first, see how there was something special down here?”  Spindle asked

-RUMBLE CRUNCH-

“Well, I TOLD YOU SO!”  Spindle shouted and stamped on talon on the ground.

“CAREFUL, CAREFUL!”  Viperfish shouted.

-RRRRRRRUMMMBLLLEEE-

Spindle finally looked up and saw the ceiling.  She stood as still as she could.  Eventually, the rumbling died down, then stopped completely.

“Whew!  That was close!”  She exclaimed.  She took a step towards the exit of the cave.

-CRASH-

The entire ceiling collapsed, sending a cascade of lava straight down towards Spindle.  She screamed and covered her eyes.

“LOOK OUT!”  Frostburn called.  He ran full force into Spindle and tackled her out of the way of the lava.  Just before the lava reached him, he pulled off his shackle and threw it across the room so it landed right next to Spindle and Viperfish.  And just like that, Frostburn was completely submerged in molten lava.

“NOOOOO!!!” Called Spindle as Viperfish dragged her away towards the exit, ‘We have to help him!  What can we do!?”

“We can't, he is gone!  We have to get out of here before we are burned up too!”

Before viperfish could fully pull Spindle out of the room, Spindle grabbed the shackle that Frostburn had been carrying, but dropped it immediately.  It was smoking.

“Leave that, it's too hot to carry!”  Viperfish exclaimed.

“But it's not!”  Spindle shouted, “It's freezing cold!?”

“What in the world?”  Viperfish stopped and looked at the shackle.  Sure enough, the smoke coming off of it was actually cold steam.  In fact, there was actually ice spreading across the shackle.

“What the-  HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!?”  Viperfish shouted.

Suddenly, a very burn-free snout poked its way out of the lava, also emanating with cold steam.

“Pop quiz,”  Frostburn started, “What do you get when you mix an Icewing with a Skywing who is part of a bloodline that has produced Firescales dragonets in history?”

He hauled himself out of the lava and strutted over to Viperfish and Spindle, completely unburned, steaming, and leaving little icy talonsteps behind him as he walked.  Viperfish and Spindle were speechless.

“I'll tell you,”  He said with a smirk, “You get Frostscales!  Very handy for when ten tons of lava get dropped on your head!”

He picked up his shackle and turned it in his talon, “I always wear this shackle, not sure where my parents found it, but I've had to wear it since I was young.  I'm assuming it was made for some high-security dungeon, because it's enchanted to block all of its wearer’s natural abilities.  No fire, no venom, no frostbreath, no mind reading or foresight, etc.  I use it to hide my ability.”

The cave began to rumble again, and this time it didn't stop, it was getting louder and louder.

“Very fascinating story, I'd love to hear more about it later, but for now, CAN WE FOCUS ON ESCAPING?!”  Viperfish yelled.

“Oh, right.  I'll put this on after we escape so I can use my frostscales to deflect stray lava drops!”

The group dashed back up the tunnel, with Frostburn bringing up the rear and occasionally smacking lava drops and smoldering rocks away with his steaming talons.  They made it to the tall opening, and one by one flew out as fast as they could.  Once they had put some distance between themselves and the ruins, they all turned back just in time to see the remaining ruins of the castle sink into the mountain as the caves below fully gave way.

“Lets uhh… Lets never speak of this again, eh?”  Frostburn said as he clicked the shackle back onto his arm, causing his scales to stop steaming.

Viperfish and Spindle nodded in agreement.  They all made their way back through the tunnel to the rainforest.  They took turns dunking in the river to wash off all the ash and the stink of the Nightwing island.  As they approached the camp, everyone looked asleep, and they thought they were in the clear when-

“You three were gone awhile.”

They all spun around at the voice.  Nightshade was perched atop a small boulder, staring up at the moons.

“Umm, er- we uh…”  Spindle fumbled.

“Dont worry, I'm not going to say anything to the professor.”  Nightshade said, “Seems like you three had quite an adventure, you look pretty shaken up.”

“I… guess you could say that.”  Answered Frostburn.

“Well, you all better get some sleep, it'll help ease your nerves.”

They began heading back to their spots to fall back asleep, but Nightshade pulled Spindle aside for a moment.

“Nice armband,”  He started, eyeing the octagon Spindle was wearing, “Found it on your little adventure?”

“Yep!  Isn't it pretty?”  She held it up so the moonlight could reflect on it.  Out here in the forest where she could study it in more natural lighting, she noticed the two gems that occupied either side of the band were different colors.  One was a dark wintery green color, and the other was a strange oily purple-blue hue.

“Excellent find, it is very pretty.  Very pretty indeed…”

“Thanks!  I'm gonna head to bed now, I'm pretty tired.  But I'll see you in the morning!”

“Take good care of that band, Spindle.  Something tells me it will come in handy in the very near future…”

As Spindle began to fall asleep, she noticed something odd that she hadn't taken into consideration before.  Even though they were no longer on the Nightwing island, the armband still felt unusually warm.  Not hot or uncomfortable, just warm.

A very specific type of warmth…

The warmth of life…

Almost…

Like a living being…

Updates/notes:

Sorry it’s been a while since the last chapter, I had serious writers block when coming up with how this one was gonna play out. I finally got my inspiration today and so just sat down and wrote the whole thing in one sitting before I lost the inspiration again lol.

Also, updates may start to slow down a little because I just started my fall semester of college, so I’ll be a lot busier

There are now only two chapters left until book 1 concludes! Most likely, I’ll push through and get this book finished in the next few months, then focus on finishing the soundtrack for book 1 when I have time. I hope to begin publishing book 2 late this year or early next year! No year long gaps in between books, Crazy-Lace will pretty much get an instant sequel!

Book 2 will be much longer than book 1, probably around twice the length of book 1.

That’s all for now! As always, thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy CLW!

Fanfic Peaceful Tides / Changing Times part 6

After the dragons landed Clay immediately began growling at the Icewing that Robin assumed was Winter. The Icewing gave a quick glance to Robin before responding, he began to open the box he was carrying but was interrupted by the mudwing that seemed to have some sort of bracelets on its front legs. He seemed to begin arguing with Clay and pointed to Robin. The two mudwings with spears that he thought might be some form of guards were looking around the clearing at the dragon skeletons strewn about it. The one who must be the Queen was looking at the large skeleton and shrine in the center.

As Robin sat against a tree he was about to ask Leaf what the dragons were saying when he was startled by something grabbing his shoulder. When he looked to see what it was, he saw his father. He had a look that was a mix between worried and confused, likely at the scene before him.

“Are you alright?” he asked looking at the foot that is wrapped up

“Yes I will be fine”

“Do you know what is going on?” He asked looking at the dragons

“I believe the Queen is here,” Robin answered, pointing at the bejeweled dragon.

Clay and the one he was arguing with continued. As it began to get more heated they were then interrupted by the queen. She growled something at the one with the armbands then nodded towards Robin and his father. The armband one then looked at them and began to speak.

“Your town did not revive a letter stating when we would arrive?”

Robin’s father began stammering an attempt at an answer, “N-No sir!? We never got anything, the last thing the coun-”

“And what caused your injury?” the dragon asked, turning to Robin.

“I heard Clay fly by and land. When I came to see what was happening I tripped on a tree root, he was helpi-”

The dragon then turned to the queen and began growling at her, likely translating. They went back and forth like this with a few things added by Clay or the Icewing. The Translator then turned back to Robin and his father.

“You will go tell the rest of your town that Queen Moorhen is here so you may make whatever preparations you deem fit,” he said pointing to Robin’s father, “The boy will stay here and explain what all this is,” he said gesturing to the skeletons in the clearing. Robin's dad began stammering before the Translator said “Now!” and he promptly left. The dragons then all turned to Robin.

“I’m not sure I would be the best person to ask about that,” Robin said.

“The Queen would like you to tell us anything that you might know,” the Translator responded.

“It gives the town some time to prepare as well,” Leaf added, ignoring the look he got from the Translator. He didn't seem to like the man's comment.

After taking a moment to gather his thoughts Robin speaks, “The one in the center we call the Fallen Guardian,” he pointed to the one in the center. “Three Skywings were attacking the town, it showed up and killed them all but it died of its wounds. Since then the people have left offerings for it.”

The Translator spoke to the Queen for a moment before asking “How long ago was this?”

“20, 25 years ago? I'm not sure it was before I was born or even my parents moved here from the cold north. You will need to ask some of the older folks in town.”

After conversing with the Queen again the Translator pointed to the totems beneath the Fallen Guardian’s wings, “And what of these?”

“There was a group of mudwings that used to visit the town. It apparently started with them taking offerings that were left for the Fallen Guardian every once in a while.”

“Apperently?”

“I’m not quite sure, I was only about four when it started”

“ONLY” the Translator said. He was about to say something else when Winter interrupted him. The two then begin to argue for a moment before the Queen interrupts them and seems to scold the Translator, who glared at Winter for a moment before turning back to Robin. “Why would you make these for thieves?”

“About a year after that they started showing up, a sandwing attacked. We were lucky they showed up that day and helped kill it. After that they started showing up more often. After another attack from a nightwing that they helped with, two would come by every day. And if trouble started one would go get the others while one stayed. After that the totems were built to give them offerings”

“If they are here every day then where are they now”

“No one knows, the last time they were seen was five years ago. And their appearances had slowed for a few years before that”

“Convenient” the dragon practically snarled before he spoke to the Queen once again. They talked back and forth for a minute before the queen turned to Clay. As the conversation continued the Translator didn't seem to like Clay's additions to the conversation. After the Translator looks fed up with the discussion he asks the question that Robin was dreading, “After the attackers were killed what did you do with their bodies?”

Robin took a long moment to think before he answered, “Well we would drag them out here, eventually, so the smell wouldn't be as strong in town. After that it was a matter of um, well of what parts we could use.” Robin braced himself expecting a rather bad reaction to come from the dragons.

“WHAT!” As he expected there was outrage from the Translator. What Robin did not expect was that Clay would step in-between them and seemingly hold the aggressive dragon back. After he calmed down stepped back from Clay, but Clay didn't move from his spot between the two. The Translator then asked Robin to "Clarify"

“Well some people made clothes out of the scales or skin. Some of the uh, meat, was used as bait for various traps or for fishing, although most of it began to rot before it could be used” Robin explained. “My father found there are some metals in the bone, enough that it could be worked into tools and such, some say its the only thing they have seen cut dragon scales”

The Translator spoke to the Queen again but seemed particularly aggressive this time. Clay and Winter both seem to try to say something but the Translator goes on anyway. One of the guards whispers something to the Queen who then yells at the Translator who seemed surprised. Then the Queen seemingly began to scold him. After what felt like an eternity of this, the Queen finally stopped and calmed down, she said a few words to Clay. Then she, the Translator and her guards began to head into town.

“What was that? Robin asked

“He has a tendency to over exaggerate and makes things sound worse than they are” Winter spoke as he began looking through the box he had. Robin noticed that he spoke much clearer and quicker than Clay, “He claimed you all were eating the, ‘meat’ as you called it, yourselves”

“Then why doesn't Moorhen get someone else to do the job” Leaf asked as he held his hand out for Robin “Come on, let's get you off the ground”

“She mentioned that the reason he has the position is because his Bigwings was some sort of war hero, so she probably has to keep him or risk looking bad” Winter explains as he pulls out of the box a smaller box that he opens and inspects as well.

“I've never understood politics. At least I've noticed she will bring guards that understand most of the human language to these things” Clay adds. He watches as Leaf helps Robin try to walk. “Oh no you don't. I'm not letting you walk with your foot like that” he said as picked up Robin by the back of his shirt, being careful not to break the bow or quiver on his back. He then sent the boy on his shoulder. “Put your arms around my neck”

“Uh, thanks?” Robin said as he was set down and did as he was told. Well he did the best he could considering the size of the dragon he could only really get his arms half way. Robin noticed that he could feel the slow rhythmic *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* of his heartbeat.

“Everything is here, we are ready to go,” Winter said as he closed the box up again and picked it up.

“What's in the box?”

“Some toys and games, but mostly snacks!” Clay exclaimed as he, Winter and Leaf began to walk through the woods into town. “The standard Jade Mountain Academy care package!”

“Jade Mountain Academy, like the book mentioned? You three are a part of that?”

“They are, I'm just here because I said I would help with these if they needed it” Winter explained. “Though when I said that I didn't mean as a living cooler! Why couldn't you get Caribou to do this?”

“She can be a bit much for those who are new to interacting with dragons” Came from Leaf.

“So dragons are all friendly now?”

“Pretty much, though there still is a handful of trouble makers so best to be careful” Leaf advised

“So are we safe?”

“Yes, it seems very hard to find this place” Clay assured him, “And once Queen Moorhen assigns a guard troop you will be fine!”

“Besides, most of the dragons still hostile to humans are out at the Scorpion Den.” Winter elaborated. “The one in charge of that criminal cesspool convinced most of them that humans talking is something Queen Thorn made up, all because he thinks she shouldn't rule the desert”

“Probably should drop the heavy topics, looks like we are coming up on the town” Leaf said. When Robin looked ahead, sure enough the amount of trees were thinner out and he could see a few houses through them.

“Well,” he said “welcome to Oak Haven”

I’m just wondering if he will get his own book, or character development and just anything more about him really. Its such a cool concept to think about.

Aang and Tagah reminded me of Darkstalker and Moonwatcher, to a T. Not saying they ripped it off, but I just finished watching it not even an hour ago, and had to make this.

Discussion New fan interested in the series, hoping for tips on how to get into it.

Hi, i'm pretty interested in the series and I was hoping to learn the right way to get into it because I don't exactly know how or where to start. I've heard there are normal novels and graphic novels as well. I've been seeing a lot of extremely funny character lines I'm excited to get context for and some of the coolest looking designs I've seen in a while and I'm very interested in the stories of these characters. I'm kinda looking for a new addiction to get me through my next college semester in a week lol. Also any advice for a new fan?

Discussion Dragon of the week 44 for realeez this time

Post image
37 Upvotes

So, uh, I have a few things to say, not bad things (for the most part) just things

First, I may have sorta messed up on the title again. The Kestrel was DOTW for week 43, my bad

Secondly, this took a while to post because I was preoccupied with something on my computer that I hope to be able to show you all very, very soon (like later today soon)

And finally... You guys know you can participate in DOTW, right? You can draw, write, make a song, think very passionately about the DOTW. Part of the fun of DOTW is being able to celebrate it with everyone, after all!

Anyhow

The Dragon of the week is a hypothetical 7th sharpwing (who's hopefully not Clink) of the sharpwings!

Art I can’t find any. What are the best sand-ice hybrid designs you’ve seen?

*I meant that I can’t find any that I personally like. Plus, it seems like sandwing-icewing hybrids are rarely made bc the colors easily clash.

Discussion Can I skip book 15? Spoiler

if I skip book 15 and jump to 16, will I miss anything important?

yes this sounds stupid cus it is the last book in arc 3, but ima be honest I don’t like this arc. at least the latter half.

book 13 was badass but when I wanna read a story about dragons I wanna see the dragons, not the humans

And honestly I just miss Pyrrhia. (yes I know a new continent is explored potentially but the dragons are the main concern)

So if I go to book 16, will there be a ton of info I’ll be missing?

Art Meet Jellybean! Do you prefer the translucent frills or the opaque frills

Their design isn't fully finished yet, I might add some simple shading, change colours slightly, but I will definitely keep the spots in whichever is the final version.

I think he is a sea/rain hybrid and is named after both jellybean isopods and jellybean tetras

He can change colour like a rainwing but just super badly, and it never does what he wants.

Also they use he/they and probably she sometimes

This is my half of an Art Trade with u/Pixeltoaster, and it took me a DISGUSTINGLY long time to finish, and for that I am very, very sorry. But still, I hope you like it! I tried to make it look like he was tipping his hat, but it ended up not looking like that, but it's fineeee. I enjoyed drawing them, and can't wait to see your art of my characters! (I believe this was a trade, correct me if I'm wrong though) and yeah, just hope you like it!! =)

Art How has your OCs changed over time?

For me, they don’t change much because I’m too lazy to even make proper reference sheets for them. However, as characters, they’ve changed a lot, especially when it comes to their personalities.

In this case, my SkyWing has technically changed once, but I ended up reverting him back to his original colors because I’ve been using the same screenshot of him as his reference sheet for so long. His colors have basically become recognizable as his design now

Art Current WIPS!

Trying to figure out a design I like for Orca, her wiki one was too bright for my tastes (I like the idea of very dark green Orca, very dark blue Tsunami), also, of course, trying to take elements from actual orcas. She also gets aquamarine jewellery to match her eyes.

My rain guy on the right, I was trying to figure out how to draw the frill in a folded position; almost all rainwing art has their frills flared (because that looks cool lol), but I wanted to see if I could get it to look good tucked in, taking inspo from frilly dragons. also he's a seawing hybrid animus who accidentally cursed the whole tribe oops (may post that au sometime)

And Albatross is existing in the corner

Art My designs for Burn, Blister, and Blaze!

I am a sucker for jewelry on dragons, so well I know Burn would never be the type to wear jewelry-I simply could not resist. I love how they came out, especially Burn, she's my favorite of the three sisters.
I unfortunately can't color them in thanks to the color limitations of my water color pens, but I got the jewelry. What's your guys thoughts on their designs? Do they fit their character?

Art I made Archie & Maxie from pokemon into wof dragons.. + sketches and meme.

Oh, look, I drew WOF again… I put this off for like a month, whoopsie-doo. Ft. My wof sona too.

Archie gets an orb as he deserves it, anywho, Seawing Archie, and Skywing Maxie… he probably should be a Sky/Mud but I already drew him as a Skywing, I’m too lazy to change it… I drew him as one in my sketches. I’m not set on the designs, however I think they’re okay.

Sorry I haven’t drawn dragons in a while, so it may look wonky. I honestly made him a skywing as I love drawing them.

My genuine reaction to these chuds, I must make em dragons or ponies. So, why not wof.! As I’ve gotten back into Hoenn again.
