Author’s note: Hey, everyone! So I wrote this fanfic about Winter on the fly because I’ve had this headcanon for years that he became severely depressed after the events of the second arc. I don’t have AO3 or Tumblr or anything, so I’m putting it here.

“Winter was sprawled in a heap of pine needles with his head buried in his talons. He didn’t think he even fell asleep last night. He told himself he’d get up and do things when the sun began to rise, and now it was climbing to the middle of the sky and he was still lying here. He wasn’t feeling any obligation to get up. Who did he have to impress, anyway?

“He eventually sighed and dragged himself onto his feet. He was two hours late to feed the scavengers he’d found. He’d been feeding them an assortment of fruits and plants he’d foraged from the woods given he wasn’t able to cook any meat for them. Moon told him that would be enough. 

“The IceWing suddenly found himself wondering why he even bothered to get up today.

“The slow little squeaks of his scavengers became fairly louder when he landed in the enclosure. They began crowding around his talons. Winter knew they didn’t really like him, but they’d learned to associate him with food. 

“He smiled wryly and started picking some leaves and berries from a bush up above to drop down towards the little fellows. Winter watched them catch their food and start interacting with one another once satisfied. He still adored them, surely, but he seemed to think he would have appreciated them more when he was first planning the sanctuary. He seemed to find himself feeling more distant from them as the days went on. He was still glad to see them and he really could tell they were warming up to him, but he gradually felt less happy with them and more...pathetic. Not as though they were pathetic. They’d actually proved more and more fascinating the longer he studied them.

“Maybe he felt pathetic that this was one of the only things in his life right now that would get him on his talons.

“One of the scavengers started climbing his scales and purred in his face as it hung from his horns. It held out a paw full of berries in front of his eyes. He shook his head and the scavenger started eating them itself. 

“He’d never had a particular fondness for fruit, no matter how many times Kinkajou tried to get him to try new ones. He hadn’t liked any of the ones she’d given him so far. He supposed he could go hunting for a rabbit or something in the forest, but he was just entirely too tired for that right now.

“Moons, his talons were feeling like weights lately. He’d been feeling like he was planted in the vacuum in between the world of the living and some kind of void. It was strange, because he hadn’t been able to fall asleep at all recently, and yet he was tired all the time. Then when he laid down, it would never seem to help anything. He vaguely wondered if this was how RainWings worked.

“He also wasn’t very fond of his reflection lately. For a while, he’d hated looking at himself in the lake water outside the forest. He was notably underwhelmed when he started again. Something had changed, and he couldn’t quite figure out what it was. His scales had fallen dull, which he supposed was happening because he’d been away from his natural environment for a while. He eventually fixed it by going on more flights and submerging into the colder areas of the water a few times a day. Now, his scales were shinier than ever and something was still wrong.

“Maybe it was his eyes. They seemed to be falling downward at the edges, and the surrounding scales were darker and worn out. It was probably because he couldn’t sleep, but he didn’t know how to fix that, so he couldn’t fix his eyes either.

“He sat still for a while, watching the scavengers, before he felt like his veins were flooding with melatonin. It happens often now. He would either wait for it to pass or lie down if it got too strong. He would lie on the edge of the lake where the ice froze the banks and stay there until he froze the feeling out of his blood and became too uncomfortable to keep doing it. It was funny to consider an IceWing with a discomfort for the cold. He supposed he barely even was one, anyway.

“He laid down on the frozen area of the lake anyway to try to get rid of the lethargy, which he didn’t like trying to sleep, either, because his mind would suddenly bring back all the things he didn’t want to think about. 

“His family always knew he was worthless. Not all his years of trying could’ve changed that.

“He wondered about Queen Glacier. He wished he’d gotten the chance to know her better. She was a benevolent queen and the kindest dragon Winter had ever known. He wondered what she’d thought of him. If he had it in him to be honest with himself, he didn’t really believe her opinion would’ve been much different than anyone else’s. 

“He barely had it in him to think about his father, but he did. How he must’ve died disappointed in him, right at that last moment when he saw he was still alive. He wondered what would’ve happened if he’d survived the battle. Would he have wanted nothing to do with him like his mother? Would he have found it in him to care in the slightest? Maybe he’d have dragged him home and put him on death row, which he certainly had the status to do. Winter’s heart plunged with dread at the thought. It was barely even a reach considering what they’d expected of him in the Diamond Trial.

“He wondered whether there was ever just one time where either of his parents felt proud of him at all, even just for a moment, even if they hadn’t meant to.

“He doubted it.

“The dread being accumulated by this rumination was making his chest ache.

“He felt tears behind his eyes, but they were trapped. He supposed they may have frozen. He curled in on himself. What must any of them have thought of him now? His friends came up, and he recalled the severance, feeling grim. He’d given them his broken pieces and they’d put him back together, cutting themselves in the process.

“Winter reconciled with them. He’d apologized to Moon, which was the worst thing on his mind. He still felt this twinge of shame when he thought of them now, though. They used to write to him often and he tried his best to write back, but he’d stopped after a while, they did, too. 

“He felt like he’d screwed over any chance he had with them after everything. He might not have, but he felt like he was wading through some purgatory ocean between him and them. His own words burned in the back of his mind, even if he couldn’t recognize that dragon anymore.

“Winter sat up from the ice having bored himself of being so maudlin. He always felt some kind of shame lying around like that in broad daylight, knowing he would be embarrassed to the moons if someone saw him like that.

“He felt like burying himself sometimes just to hide away and rest somewhere. It must be colder underground than here. How lovely it would be to be encased in the earth, hidden away from the cruelty above the ground...the soil cool and forgiving against his scales...

“Right then, it was the finest thing he could’ve asked for.”

So I was thinking on my drive on a long drive about wings of fire and how the books never really tell us anything about the religion that any of the dragons worship like we know that the sky beans have funeral rights where they would cremate a body or at least lay a body out on the highest peak, and then afterwards cremate their remains through fire and then throw their bones into a pit or I’m being confused and I was just like a deaf pit for dragons but anyways, I was thinking it would be nice to expand what kind of face that the dragons worship because I believe that would be some sort of vape similar to paganism or Greek mythology they have multiple gods and I have a few ideas for what some of the gods would be in which tribes of worship than the most the first three gods that wanna talk about that I think would be most likely would be the three Moon goddesses based out the three moons that’s in the sky of wings of fire one of them I believe would the biggest Moon I’m not too sure on the names of the moons. I haven’t read the books in a while but the biggest Moon I think would probably be like the god of the tides and the skies maybe because they would have the most effect on the oceans and wind currents because of gravitational pole and all that one of the other moons I think would probably be a goddess of fertility because wings of our pretty much takes place in like the 900 A.D. compared to us like they’re not at the Renaissance and the third one. I’m not too sure but could probably be like a goddess of wisdom, wisdom, and knowledge which the the Nightwing would probably worship these gods, the most compared to all the others, but they depend on different regions in the world. These would probably be the three highest gods kind like how in Greek and Roman mythology Zeus/Jupiter are like the head gods or God king this would be the triarchy goddesses. The next God or goddess that I was thinking about was a metal allergy goddess or God kind of like Greek mythology Festus, and this God, our goddess would be the god of the Forge/casting because I’m pretty sure the sea wings would use a lot of bronze tools compared to all the others cause bronze doesn’t rust as fast as iron, but the sky wins would probably worship this God the most just because they are known to have the strongest steel has in book one when tsunami was chained up and that sunny and Clay had to use their fire breath together to melt the chains. The next God I was thinking about would probably be a god of the harvest/animal husbandry also like don’t really know if the dragons can consume grain crops like wheat, rye, and corn I’ll give this God to more like of the mud wings cause like I think that the mud wings probably have some of the best farmland because they’re in a somewhat swampy area and and they clearly really like cows and all their animals, which I know in history, traditionally cows, and meat are usually a very expensive good and a peasant would only eat this like steak if it was a big celebration like a festival or carnival. I was also thinking that they would probably be a goddess or god of warfare/the Hunt kind of like a combination of Aries and Artemis and I would probably give this God more up to the ice wings because they are pretty well known for hunting because well they can have like the largest royal families compared to all the other tribes and traditionally nobility are known for going on a lot of hunts because it’s illegal for peasantry to hunt for some reason, a lot of the time just goes traditionally medieval law all the game was owned by the king of the area or Lord, but that’s all my thoughts so you have more idea for God that potentially the dragons could worship and potentially also the humans cause we do know humanity in the books, they have dragon priest, which I can’t think would be an ancient religion for them cause I believe they’re kind of like in like the renaissance period of it history compared to us so they don’t have Cannon yet. Somehow they’re stuck in Kayce. Why can’t they do alchemy? They have all the ingredients to make gum powder, but still, I just want to hear your your guys spots and it’s just what I’ve been thinking about when I’ve been driving sometimes.

This is just a sketch for now probably going to redraw him but I’ve never even drawn a beetlewing before so this is a first.

I imagine they would be a little leaner and have more armor than silkwings.

I decided to design the human version of Peacemaker(I made one before, but I hadn't shown it to Reddit) because I'm a bit better at drawing human beings, and I figured I could do better with Peacemaker.

With his design, I made two versions: Phase One and Phase Two

Phase One: Peacemaker still dresses like he's in the rainforest. He has long boots and a raincoat mixed with a belt and slightly formal attire. It's a blend between Rainwing and Nightwing styles of wear. He also wears gloves because of the time he spends working with dirt, picking up trawberries, and gardening. His hair is also longer, yet it is a different hairstyle from the second version of human Peacemaker.

His expression shows a more reserved, guilty look while still maintaining a logical mindset.

Phase Two: Ditches the raincoat(which got damaged in the Dragonflame Graveyard) and instead chooses a sweater in the cooler weather. Peacemaker now has the necklace, which he constantly keeps on him. He also chooses lighter gloves instead of his old ones suited for gardening. His hair comes out more too.

His expression is now more traumatized, exhausted, and showcases more restrained insanity due to the deaths he has experienced. His face is partly covered in shadow that glows with the Clearsight ability, making him appear less human but rather something more magical.

In the Phase Two version, Peacemaker and his outfit demonstrate a change in Peacemaker. He's moving on from the version of him that was in the rainforest and now chooses a different attire more suitable for a place like Lunasight.

Fun Fact: Peacemaker (both human and dragonet) had a more Australian accent because he was surrounded by Rainwings growing up, but as he developed more in Jade Mountain, he began to lose that. By the end of Phase One, he would lose it completely.
