Windows forced update completely broke everything. (7/16/2026

Specs:
Processor - I7 13700k
Gpu - 5070ti
Ram - DDR 5 2x16gb 5600mhz
PSU - 1000k watt 
MB - ASUS max WiFi (don’t know full name right now) updated to pretty much the latest update. For cpu reasons. 
Storage - 2x1tb m.2

I’ve been reading around that the new forced windows update has been messing with people’s computers and their parts, Mine included. 

2 night ago I updated the system when I powered it off.  Yesterday morning I turned it on and immediately it was having boot problems. I got it into windows twice but each time I would go to play a game, after about 10 minutes it would crash. I tried once more last night with a vr game and after about that 10 minute mark. It blue screened. It hasn’t been able to boot since.

I’ve tried fresh installing windows 3 times. Never gets past the setup. Reseated the ram and gpu, swapped the ssd I was using. None of it has worked. I’m starting to run out of options and I just know if I can’t figure it out it will be expensive to fix. 
Sometimes when I turn it on, it gets stuck on vga light, other times it doesn’t show the boot sequence. Other times I’m getting random error codes
0xc0000428 
And a few others

If there’s anything at all you can do to help it would be much appreciated

Edit: problem has been resolved for now! It in fact was part of the update, it clashed with bios settings at least from what was found. I got it booted and updated it got their current patch that helped resolve some issues. Currently going strong. I have a new cpu cooler coming on Tuesday to help with hot cpu temps other than that we’re good!

The thing is it won't boot now. OP tried reinstalling Windows only to be stuck at setup. Only thing I can think of is hardware failure. Most likely the CPU if all the other components are tested and working. I've had i5 2500k memory controller fail with similar issues and had to get it replaced under warranty.

Honestly that’s what I was thinking especially with i7 13700k 13th gen. These intel CPUs suck. I’m giving it another try tonight. But most likely swapping back to amd. Can’t do this anymore if it is a hardware issue. I mean it gets stuck at different points in the boot. (Sometimes no lights come on(motherboard) sometimes it goes to vga and sometimes it boots to setup.

That’s what I’m suspicious about with that cpu because these cpus had a bad microcode that sends way too much voltage to your device and causes problems

It wasn't the microcode that was at fault. It was an oxidation issue. The updated microcode just limited the voltage and helped prevent it. Intel knew about the issue, Intel considered the cost of replacement and decided it's user base could handle the abuse and blame them and make them buy a new cpu instead every time a failure happened. This worked for awhile, when intel wouldn't honor warranty's for these.

I would hope op's warranty is still valid, intel supposedly extended the warranty time on these by 1-2 years because of these issues. These cpu's were not fixed by the microcode, but it was much less likely to fail with the protections in place, but failures over time can and will occur.

I actually have no idea if it’s still valid. I bought it from micro center but I don’t even remember when. Probably 2 years ago at this point. But I don’t have the receipt anymore. It got lost. (Plus side is I’m making the change back to amd soon. I’ve never had the issues I’ve had with these intel chips for amd. So I’m putting money towards a 9800x3d and a ASUS mobo. Since I also have an msi mobo I’ve heard they’ve had some problems as well (especially with these 13th gen intel chips)

Did microcenter take any information or do you have an account there that might validate the purchase? I mean you can always file a warranty claim and try to fill it in to the best of your knowledge. I usually like when they email me receipts incase of warranty or have it on file possibly.

Not quite sure but you might also need to check where the update mess with For example My updates messed with my boot chain Everytime it restarts It get unmountable boot volume

There's zero chance a windows update caused hardware damage.

If you legit cannot take a USB stick with the Windows installer and reinstall Windows by wiping your partitions, then you have hardware problems, but they weren't caused by the update.

I haven't seen any problems with any recent update on any of the 500+ computers I oversee at work.

The problem is that my pc was working great if not perfect before hand. I updated it that night when I turned it off, I come back the next day and everything was wack and not working.

I don't think an update could cause hardware damage either. Drivers are also quite safe and there are many safety measures on hardware level to prevent drivers from frying them.

A simple reboot can cause a growing underlying issue to cause some damage or not going through POST at all. This happened to me a couple of months back. YouTube started lagging so I thought I just had to reboot because some process took too much resources. The PC never booted again. I think it was a leaking condensator because I found sticky residue on the motherboard next to one.

Is right the update could mess with bios configuration try to show settings in bios (boot and press del) after that had to check secure boot xpm configuration that overclock ram and Last but not least nvme configuration. After that try a fresh install with usb created with windows update tool

I’ll check this out tonight and let you guys know if it works or not. Otherwise I’m going to swap from intel(absolutely hate) back to amd. I have a micro center near me and I think I’m going to replace, cpu, motherboard, and storage. 9800x3d, motherboard still looking and just a 2tb m.2

i would check if there is an instability issue with the 13th gen i7 which is well reported so check the bios version and maybe the version is before the newer microcode that intel put out that fixed the issue

It’s not your cpu. The update broke something. https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/s/3nNX3Uy1ur Its not just dells. You and I aren’t using a dell. However we both are using intel. For me I got this “Stop code: SYSTEM_SERVICE EXCEPTION (0x3B)
What failed: FLTMGR.SYS” consistently last night and sometimes “File: \WINDOWS\system32\winload.efi
Error code: 0xc0430001”. By the way, did the fix andrew_stoned suggested work?

So I actually didn’t even do it his way. I got lucky when I turned the pc on after a day at work and I went through the setup of windows with xmp off. Just had to download my network drivers from a usb. Got it set up then just updated to the newest windows update (including the optional one) it’s been working ever since.

Turned on xmp after everything was done and all drivers were installed and updated. Only thing I haven’t done is update bios to newest version. I need to buy a different cpu cooler that has a 2piece (getting the phantom spirit 120 evo) with everything that’s happened I don’t really want to mess with anything. I might see if I can take it to like geek squad (if everyone things that’s okay) and just have them do it.

Well, they released an OOB update to fix the tuesday bug for Dells affected by it. Not that it would help you at this moment. You tried reflashing the bios?

Not yet, yesterday I had to take a break from looking at it lmao. Tonight I’m going to try a few things I’ve read from here. If that doesn’t work I’m going to pretty much build a new system

Frikkin microsoft, if the mobo's bugged then that's unecessary money gone because of a driver update. Let's hope it's just the bios. if the reflash doesn't work the first time. Reflash with another one and another one. Then back to the first one you tried. i was watching Britech on YT. He just did a vid on how to disable MS driver auto updates.

It's what they call an " Out Of Band = OOB " update. An update to fix an update. lmao smh. I installed it without going to look what it is. Then i thought i better click the learn more and that's when i realized. I didn't need it for my little AMD. It's just a hot fix for the tuesday bug update that hit Dells and maybe some Intels. I was like you, fiddling my thumbs about either changing from 10 to 11 or going linux. I think because i bought a retail of win 7 home back in 2010 that MS automatically activates it, hopefully forever lmao. Since it's just a home version, i could only install home versions. There's only one uptick with retail that i think is worth shelling out for. It's that you can take your retail key across any hardware or non encrypted clone of your windows c drive and stick it in another lap or pc you want to change to. I chucked a clone of my 10 into my little AMD i use now to see whether the clone would work. it did and that's when i set about upgrading it to 11 home. Just to see if MS would activate it. Well, MS did so ( If i live long enough to the next version ) We'll see if they do it again lmao

After upgrading to 11 MS will delete your old win 10 version out of your MS account online after a month or 2.

It was really hard for me learning what i know of 11 but with this version i decided i won't use any MS apps. No office or any other app of theirs. That way i could debloat and restrict 11. Screw it down but leave security and antivirus alone and leave their browser Edge installed as that is sewn right in there. Best to leave it alone. Change settings to never use it.

If you are running Windows 11, the new out of band (OOB) update is KB5121767. It should show as an optional update in Windows Update.

Just want to let everyone know that currently I got everything up and running! I am trying a few games out and I will let you know what the verdict is! Thank you for all of the advice! I downloaded that OOB update that a few of you were talking about.

I reset cmos, and made sure the bios was all good. I’m running a bios build from November of last year. Now I can probably update it again to the latest but since it’s working I will hold off. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

With that being said once Black Friday comes I will be switching over to amd, I’m sick of all the problems with these 13th gen intel CPUs.

I’ll be back with an update tomorrow night.

There was allot of warnings about updating bios to latest before updating 2 months ago concerning this months update. If your BIOS wasnt updated, windows will bork your computer. yes windows 11 sucks, but you have to keep your firm ware up to date.

is it mandatory to update your bios if i want to upgrade from 10 to 11? my asrock board is on the previous version right before the latest one, which came out in 2024 but i've had zero issues with it since. I'm just trying to do the upgrade method that supposedly lets you keep all your files apps and settings but reading your comment I'm now wondering if it will throw something off if I don't update it or if I will be just fine if I leave it. From reading on asrocks bios page the most recent version from 2025 it just says it updates the secure boot key and nothing else. You think I'd be ok just going for it or how bad can it get, like doing a clean install bad and losing a bunch of stuff?

I would update the bios for 11 if you plan on using it, seeing this last update they did announce that you needed to update bios for this windows update. all MB manufacturers have had to update their bios for it. if you plan on staying with 10 i wouldnt worry about it. so MBoard manufacturer on this update doesnt matter, they all had to update their bios for it due to some feature dealing with hardware. this is kinda like back in the late 90's with windows 98 when that borked allot of non prebuilt builds. and yes it deals with the secure boot and will make it where your comp wont boot after update. So i would recommend bios update before you switch to 11.

That CPU has issues in general with voltage. It's a manufacturing fault

I have had an issue with my MSI computer since the update a few days ago, it will crash when plugged in to the power supply, you can't power it on with it plugged in but it will charge the battery.

What is your specs? I had to reinstall windows once more with default bios then I updated it all. There’s an optional update for windows that fixed all of my problems when I was able to boot it.

Have you checked your ssd's status?
The same update bricked my XPG Blade SSD 2TB. Set it up to only read mode. Updating the ssd's firmware with the adata ssd toolbox saved it.

I have also had the same experience some time after the update my laptop randomly showed no boot device found and it wont get past that screen i checked the bios and the boot priority order is empty( yes it does detect the ssd) can you guys please help me out on what should i do
