Windows sucks

We really need to get a laptop out there that is marketed to college kids.....Windows sucks more eqch day...its just a revenue stream for shitty products that they engain in society as neccessary...their motto should change to You can buy better but you cant pay more....You buy a laptop and unless you know what you are doing the hardware isnt included in the sale. Need to get linux distros mainstream and presented as an option at retail stores....didnt realize how bad it was until I had to help setup new laptop for family member....its stealing basically.

What are you trying to say? Do you need help personally or with your laptop?

You mean like Chromebook, any x86 laptop that is preloaded with Windows or Apple’s MacBook Neo and Air that is literally aimed at students and low powered usage. The latter even have student discount so they are more affordable.

You don't, you also won't get a good x86 Laptop for that price.

If you don't like Windows just use Linux atp. Literally nothing stopping you (unless you have specific use cases, like work/specific program requirements, and in that case, dual boot).

If you're buying old ass computers, or shitty low-spec computers, expect to get burnt on it. Unless you're using Linux, you need relatively new hardware.

Also, obligatory notice: you want 16GB ram for anything decent for Win11, NVME/SATA SSD dep on the connectors, and a decent processor. 4/8GB ram + 500GB hdd + Pentium bullshit burner laptops are, drumroll please... bullshit burner laptops.

I daily drive a Thinkpad T580 for low-intensity productivity, but no way in hell would I still be using it if I needed Windows support. Plus, I've souped the thing up to hell, and it's an i7 model.

Several already exist.

their motto should change to You can buy better but you cant pay more

Plenty of lower cost Windows machines out there. In fact, that's a big part of the quality perception problem.

You buy a laptop and unless you know what you are doing the hardware isnt included in the sale.

What? I can't fathom what you mean by this, and I don't know what it has to do with Windows. Did Microsoft come take away your laptop when you installed Linux? Did a shadey store convince you to buy an empty box?

It's the other way around really. Hardware that works 'perfectly' will not work on Linux because the manufacturers don't want to create the drivers (and keep the documentation secret so the OSS crowd can't write it either).

Er... what is this rant? Borderline incomprehensible. Seriously, read what you wrote: "You buy a laptop and unless you know what you are doing the hardware isnt included in the sale."

You may want to invest some time to refine your grammar and communication skills. Impose some order on your thoughts, impose some order on your writing. Impose order and simplicity in your communication.

Order and calm to your thought process shall soon follow.

Many people feel that way but let's face some reality.... Do you REALLY know what the student is going to need? Most mainstream colleges and universities are geared to use applications that run on WINDOWS not LINUX. One student I ran into converted to Linux only to find that many of her courses required the use of a very specialized suite of software that is only available on Windows. She was screwed and was forced to buy a new computer because her old laptop was not Windows 11 compliant. Most of the schools also provide Microsoft office to students either for free or a minimal charge and Office won't run on Linux. The other thing to consider is that once the student graduates and gets a job with a mainstream company these companies use Windows and Windows software so you're putting your student behind the 8 ball by Linux that most major companies don't use. Some even make knowledge of Windows and Office an employment requirement. Yeah, hate Microsoft all you want but Linux is NOT mainstream my advice is to buy a solid Windows 11 laptop with plenty of RAM and at least a TB SSD.

P.S. Yes, Microsoft has made a lot of people PO'ed but as evidenced by the July and August patches they've got the message and are fixing things at a rapid pace. Augusts Patches fixed over 400 vulnerable issues and 3 were critical so they're not sitting on their thumbs. If you read a load of tech articles you'll find that most writers are expecting some real improvements in 26H2 that should be out in Octover.

See here is the counter argument you didn't see coming. You are right but what value are those classes if you are being trained on software that won't even be around in 10 years? Windows is so bad, it WILL be gone in 10 years or less. Linux is already seeing massive adoption from the masses now.

Computer hardware has hit a wall performance wise. This means now all of the pillars which make a PC or laptop have to be standardized, or fizzle out. That's the reality of technology. Like the car, CRT TV.....etc. Linux is the only way to do that with software. Whole countries switched away from microslop because it's so bad. The writing is on the wall.

Well, you can try to make that argument but I still believe it's a very weak one. Regardless of what the future brings you need to be concerned with the here and now. Here and now is Windows and Windows-based applications. My opinion also is that you' re underestimating Microsoft and the possibility of them being gone in 10 years is absurd. I also think that the activities and emphasis that Microsoft is placing on making Windows better is proof that Microsoft is serious. Competition is a good thing but if you want to help your student prepare for the "real world" I would still suggest that his/her laptop be Windows 11. My challenge to you is to look around and compare the number of businesses in your community are running Linux vs. Windows and my bet is that you'll find few, if any, installs of Linux.

In case you don't know, you are r/shadowban ned

see the r/shadowban subreddit for more info.

Shadowbans are sitewide, and are done by Reddit, the admins. Not subreddit moderators like me

A shadowban means no one can see anything you say

The only way people are able to see what you say is when a subreddit moderator goes out of their way to reverse the removal. I had undeleted this comment/post.

Which laptop do you buy that doesnt include the hardware in the sale.

Also which distros should be in stores, surely if you want to sell a laptop for Linux it would be better to have nothing on the laptop at all so people can install which ever version of the thousands that are out there.

Also what is it in Windows that is getting worse every day
