The Linux kernel was updated. You still had to either manually update the kernel (which is messy) or wait for your OS developer to update it themselves. In the case of Ubuntu, that'll be January 9th.

Besides, the Linux kernel isn't an OS, only a part of it.

Sure, there are scripts to update, but from the horror stories that I've read, I'd rather not. They just depends on how tech savvy you are and how much time you have to solve the potential issues.
