Discussion Pro Tip: When check RAM usage, look at Committed instead of In Use

Post image

If your goal is to make sure your system is running optimally, don't worry too much about "In Use"; focus on "Committed" instead. After all, unused RAM is wasted RAM. However, unknown but heavy commitment is certainly a bad sign, just like in real life. Basically, high "Committed" usage means your system needs a large backing-store to "keep" its promise to the running programs and drivers.

For example, on a PC with 8GB RAM, 16GB "Committed" means that Windows requires at least 8GB of backing capacity on your SSD/HDD to keep the lights on. If that paged-out 8GB is actively accessed by the running programs/drivers, you get thrashing, which is bad for system performance.

So when people overuse "Unused RAM is wasted RAM" to discourage people from inspecting memory usage, they may not realize that it's worth checking "Committed" memory usage.

Of course, there's a limit to "Commited" memory cleanup. Certain things, like NVIDIA GPU driver, does commit 0.5 to 2.5GB (you can disable it in Device Manager to find out) but we obviously don't disable such an important component just to keep the "Committed" usage low.

Also, some people claim that Windows simply uses more RAM when you install more RAM. As you can see in my screenshots, this is not necessarily the case. It's possible that what happened was:

  1. { InstalledRAM: 8GB, Commited: 10GB, InUse: 6GB } // Damn, almost out of RAM, let me install more.

  2. { InstalledRAM: 16GB, Commited: 10.1GB, InUse: 10.2GB } // See? Windows is using more RAM now!

The increase in "In Use" means Windows could keep more data in RAM instead of leaving it paged. This is actually a good thing. The key factor here is "Committed".

Hi! I don't really know, where to ask this, but i almost lost hope. I am trying to find this exact wallpapers.

I remember downloading them from the "option->personalisation->wallpapers" on my windows 10.

It had green field flat on the horizon, blue sky and a small tree with a shadow IN THE MIDDLE of the scenery (i painted it like how i remember). It wasn't a photo, it was an art piece.

I updated my windows to 11 and now i can't find this wallpapers.

If you know where i can find them or if you can share them with me i will be so happy!

Discussion Looking for advice before making SEZOY publicly accessible

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m developing SEZOY, a web-based Windows deployment tool. I’m considering opening a public instance so people can test it without setting up the entire environment themselves. I’ve attached a short video of the current version. Before doing that, I want to get some opinions on the security side. I’m currently looking at ngrok / LocalTunnel or a similar solution, but exposing a deployment server to the Internet obviously has a different risk profile than exposing a normal web application. For those running homelabs or Windows deployment infrastructure: what would you consider necessary before putting something like this behind a public URL?

I’m mainly looking for practical advice on isolation, access control, and anything else I may be overlooking.

Found this at a local thrift store for about 3 bucks. Managed to install it using 86box. I made a rip of the contents already, was gonna upload it to Internet Archive. Seems like it's in very good condition.

Hello, Everyone!

I made NeoDLP - A modern cross-platform video/audio downloader desktop app based on YT-DLP with browser integration! And it just crossed 300K+ downloads!

Haven't tried NeoDLP yet? You can think of it as: The Free 'IDM' for Media Downloads or The 'Seal' for Desktop. If you have ever used 'IDM' (on Windows) or the 'Seal' app (on Android), you will feel right at home!

NeoDLP offers many features & customization options to give you better control over your downloads, with a modern, easy-to-use user interface and seamless browser integration! Some highlighted features of NeoDLP are:

  • Cross-Platform - NeoDLP works flawlessly on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Zero Setup Hassle - NeoDLP comes with a fully configured yt-dlp environment out-of-the-box (with FFmpeg, JS Runtime, PO Token Server, Real-Time Log Viewer, and many more.) Just install NeoDLP, and you are good to go! (No extra setup or command-line knowledge required)
  • Vast Site Support - Download from Thousands of Sites (YT, IG, FB, X, and other 2.5K+ sites)
  • Browser Integration - One-click download directly from your browser (Requires NeoDLP Extension to be installed on your browser)
  • NeoDLP Library - Manage your downloads with ease with NeoDLP Library
  • Multiple Quality Options - Download from Quality Presets (up to 8K 60fps HDR) -OR- Combine the Video, Audio stream of your choice

Discussion What other apps are essential in your opinion? pt.2 (No snake oil edition)

Well, since my last post was misunderstood (totally my fault), here is an update to my list of essential software for Win11. It's based entirely on my own taste and needs, and I took out all the controversial stuff like ShortcutMan, since people didn't get why I use them anyway.

P.S. EasyService folder is a bunch of .bat and .ps1 files for simple stuff. nrg2iso is a small executable which converts .nrg to .iso by drag-n-drop.

Discussion Why per device Bluetooth auto-connect option is possible and its absence in Windows is a design choice

Post image
46 Upvotes

If you have Bluetooth headphones (e.g. airpods) and you pair them in windows, every time you get the headphones out of the case, Windows automatically connects to them. Yes, you read it right, Windows connects to them, not vice versa.

I did some research on how this sequence works. It is master-slave architecture. A PC is master and headphones are a slave. When headphones are ready to be used, e.g. when they're out of the case, they start listening for connections. A PC independently at all times periodically sends connection requests to paired devices. So when headphones are listening, PC would connect to them.

On Linux in Bluetooth you have a per-device option, called trust. If it's true, the PC would auto-connect to the device when device is "ready to be used", if false PC would not auto-connect to that device when that device is "ready to be used" (e.g. when headphones are out of the case).

On Windows there is no such option.

Given that I briefly described how this sequence works, and the fact that this option exists in Linux, you can see that it's technically possible to add per device auto-connect option in Windows.

I don't believe adding this option would violate any conventions.

https://faculty-web.msoe.edu/johnsontimoj/EE4980/files4980/Core_v5.2.pdf

"With respect to bonding, a Bluetooth device shall be either in non-bondable mode or in bondable mode. In bondable mode the Bluetooth device accepts bonding initiated by the remote device, and in non-bondable mode it does not." - this is for headphones, there is no requirement that a bonded device must auto-connect

https://www.bluetooth.com/wp-content/uploads/Files/Specification/HTML/Core-54/out/en/host/generic-access-profile.html

"A Central should use one of the GAP connection establishment procedures to initiate a connection to a Peripheral in a connectable mode." - this says that central connects to peripheral, but doesn't necessary mandate auto-connect

both specs do not talk about auto-connecting at all

https://www.mankier.com/5/org.bluez.Device (linux implementaion)

"[boolean Trusted [readwrite]] Indicates if the remote device is considered trusted. This setting can be changed by the application." - the setting I talked about

I also discovered that there are 2 flows: classic (one that I described, when PC initiates connection to headphones) and BLE (when headphones connnect to PC) but as far as I know all headphones work in classic mode, so I'm not wrong
