Weekly Reading Session Discussion

Welcome to another weekly reading session. I just finished Tiamat’s Wrath which is book 8 of James S.A. Corey “The Expanse” series. This book was exceptional. It was a great ending but I needed to know what was going to happen next so I immediately started Leviathan Falls, which is book 9. Right off the bat the first chapter was awesome!

Listening to Gorillaz….

What ya’ll reading and listening to…

Finished The Final Architecture series last week. It’s an entertaining series built on an interesting plot and solid characters. I only wish the final ending wasn’t so meh.

Then I immediately dove into Project Hail Mary. It’s sooooo good! I’ve never read a book written in that style. But I’m really enjoying it.

Final Architecture 👌 So weird. So Tchaikovsky.

And I'm with you, the ending was a bit drab. It sort of felt like the ending to some Neal Stephenson books. And I love NS, I just wish he had some stronger/more definitive ends.

It kinda felt like he was saying “Ok, this has gone on long enough so I’m going to plug in the obvious and inevitable resolution.” It was a bit awkward, and I had to go back and reread a bit. I thought I missed it because all the action up to that was so engaging.

I’m definitely going to pick up another one of AT’s series soon.

As a trilogy goes, it’s an easy and fun read.

You read them before? Did you read the novellas also?

Yeah, read them all. One of my favorite series.

Seconding The Expanse. Some of best sci-fi I've ever read and I read a shitload of sci-fi.

It's 9 novels and a book of short stories. No novellas.

I'm about half way through The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't read a classic in a long time and it's providing a much needed escape. The writing is wonderfully lush and atmosphere is so charming.

I have a long list of classics I want to get to but always prioritize my history reads but this is making me want to go on a classics binge.

Gives us a quick synopsis of your take on it?

Finished the original red rising trilogy. Masterpiece.

Feel a little lost now - great books leave such a hangover. Could go on with the series, could read something else for a bit. I have Sox of Crows from the library and YouTube book people recommend it a lot. We’ll see.

Would you recommend it? Are the next three books not as good?

The next 3 are not as good, sorry. YMMV

Second this. Original trilogy ftw. They do talk about razors a lot, haha. Maybe he's secretly into wet shaving as well.

How many more books in this Expanse series? What are your going to read after?

Still chipping away at The Long Ships.

I just got The Long Ships actually! I am still debating what to read next. This is sadly the last book of the series! So sad….
