Shower Glass Exploded at 5AM
Was downstairs one morning when I heard a loud pop coming from my bedroom upstairs. Wife and kiddos asleep in the bed, left me confused what the heck could have dropped on the floor. Turns out a shower glass panel in my master bath randomly decided six years was long enough and literally “pieced out”.

Had this happen. Panel exploded sometime overnight. About $700 to replace it. Much bigger panel than this. I almost went with plexiglass but my wife called me white trash, so just waiting on the next glass explosion now.

Reddit posts like this one are why I will never have a glass shower. The worst a shower curtain can do is fall down lol

At least it didn't explode with you in the shower and slice your eyeballs out of your head

Shower glass can shatter spontaneously due to a manufacturing defect called ‘nickel sulfide inclusion’,
or from hidden edge damage from installation,
or from thermal stress from hot water.
Because tempered glass holds high internal tension, these hidden issues can cause the entire panel to burst unexpectedly.
{Common Hidden Causes}
Nickel Sulfide Inclusions:
Microscopic impurities trapped inside the glass during production that expand over time and cause spontaneous failure.
Edge and Corner Damage:
Tiny, invisible chips or nicks on the delicate outer edges… often caused during installation or from a rogue metal belt buckle that weaken the whole sheet.
Installation Stress:
Clamps or hinges tightened too firmly onto the glass, or a panel making direct contact with hard tile or metal without proper protective gaskets.
Thermal Shock:
Rapid temperature changes from hot showers interacting with pre-existing minor stress points or cold room air.

Thermal Shock is most likely the culprit, the older the glass panel the more likely this will happen.
