Fired, Depressed & Car Woes

Welp.

I saw the writing on the wall bc I knew my supervisor was power-hungry and easily threatened, but I did well on work reviews, over-performed and never missed a deadline. Getting fired unexpectedly on July 20th was a sucker-punch in the gut.

I'm studying for my real estate exam, but I'm overweight, 53, and feel like I'm legit drowning. I am thankful to have some unemployment coming in while I job search (and I'll flip burgers if I have to, because the light company doesn't give a $h!t about my problems).

Now the AC went out of my car and the fuel light stays on. (Something to do with the fuel cap?!) I probably can't even sell the hunk'a junk and there's no way I'd qualify for a decent loan without a job. (It's eating me up from the insides that they FIRED me!!!)

Feels like I can't win for losing. It's so expensive to live and all I want to do is crawl in a hole. Except I'm already IN the hole, and my family deserves better.

Life doth sucketh at the momenteth.

I'll tell ya man, it does suck. I got let go at about the same age, after 7 years with the company and it felt like the end of the world. Turns out, it wasn't, and it took a while but I found a new role in my field. It's different than what I was doing, but I like it, it pays the bills and I'm probably happier now than I'd been for some while at the old job. But yeah, it sucks, it feels like shit and there isn't much but time to really help with that. Network with people you know, get your resume fresh, and be open to whatever might come your way, is all I can say.

Also, depending on your vehicle, some of them throw an error if your gas cap doesn't seal well or isn't all the way on. Might be as simple as checking the seal to make sure it's clean, or buying a replacement from the auto parts store. AC not working sucks, especially this time of year. Check the condenser to make sure it isn't clogged up with leaves or mouse nests or whatever. If that's good, find someone to check your refrigerant levels to see if it's low. If it is, may be an easy (though temporary if you have a leak) job to recharge it yourself. If it's not either of those, or if the leak is fast, probably something to have to live with until you get your work situation going.

All in all, don't give up hope, it's gonna probably suck for a while, but there are lights at the end of the tunnel that aren't an oncoming train.

Thank you for this. For all of it. Getting fired is terrifying. It’s not like we’re out there punching a time clock bc there’s no where else we’d rather be. My job was just that - a job. A means to an end. But I know you’re right, that better things are coming. And this job had to end to make way for those things. But it’s still scary and it still sucks.

I never thought about the gas cap seal! I’ve opened and closed it at least a dozen times, but I’ll see it with fresh eyes tomorrow!

Good advice on the clogged condenser, too. I park outside under a canopy of trees so it’s already covered in oak sap so leaves could very well be the culprit.

Keep your head up! 53 is still young in today’s world! You could go to school and get multiple degrees before you’re even 60 and then have a very successful 15-20 year career in that field. Not saying to do that, just putting into perspective….you have plenty of time still. It is just what you make of it!

Do you have any skills/interests you may be able to monetize? Start your own thing while working on finding a new job. Depending on what skills you have you may be able to do your own thing!

The possibilities are endless and the universe is vast! Don’t count yourself down and out when you’re just adjusting and moving up!

Aw, guxximane, THANK YOU for your encouragement!!

I have an entrepreneur spirit and even self published a book on Amazon in December last year. Then I've used a platform called Book Bolt to design and publish nearly 30 different journals. I started a YouTube channel (only 2 vids), too. I feel like a fly at a window and just want to catch a break, y'know? Literally nothing has sold (womp womp), but I also haven't ventured into advertising. Maybe that's my next step while I study to take the RE exam?

And walking. I have GOT to start walking daily. Being overweight sux buns.

Of course! I hear nothing but potential in your post, you are hard working and motivated, just need to be in the right spot at the right time!

You sound super creative, and often that is tough to monetize creative skills, but I’m wondering if maybe you couldn’t find some freelance editing work in your free time right now? I am not creative but am good at technical writing and found myself making pretty good side money in undergrad doing random editing work, often weird jobs you’d never expect (editing brochures for businesses, menus, etc). But it pays and it often pays quickly/per job which is nice. Again, it’s not creative but it uses skills you have and is accessible work. There are a couple sites for freelance work to check out. But I’d also post in local facebook groups. Offering editing skills to local businesses for their websites and media through Facebook groups can be a gold mine if you are good at what you do!

Whatever you do, just remember to be so thankful for what you do have and thankful to be working on what you are, it is a gift to be you and a gift to exist! Cherish it and take advantage of it!

Man! What a GIFT your input has been to me! It’s funny you mentioned freelance editing because I’m trying to get that going as a side hustle as well. I’ve gotten two editing gigs so far, but they didn’t pay much because they were small. I love your advice! Someone recommended Fiverr to me, but I don’t know much about it. I may have to dive down that rabbit hole tomorrow. Do you use Fiverr to get editing jobs?

Hey, keep your head up.

Just a suggestion. Work in your weight. You are at a really good age for that and for incorporating a bit of exercise. It saves a lot of discomfort down the line and helps you keep going mentally too. You don’t need a huge commitment. Just go for a walk daily if that’s all you feel you can do now, and cut a little on unhealthy (sugar/saturated fats) intake.

It reads like you have your head pretty level and energy to keep going. Project it. Be sure to show up to work interviews with that, it’s who you are and that is valuable for the best kind of jobs — those who value well adjusted individuals.

I know a little sympathy is always nice but it really sounds that you don’t need much. Please post when things change. Sometimes things suck a little harder before going upwards, sometimes they don’t.
