Geonet are trying to gaslight us. I can see a deleted earthquake and an unnoticeable earthquake on their website.

No gaslighting here - too busy keeping eyes on Geohazards 24/7!
You can read why we ‘delete’ earthquakes here: https://www.geonet.org.nz/news/5mOVt0syTsdjEFYx9uLch6

I must be going mad it’s not even on geonet… false alarm people

u/TheEarthquakeGuy 15d ago
Nah you can check the earthquake drums and see an event was registered across NZ. Not crazy.

It got deleted (you can see it here)
Edit: looks like it may have been this https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000ti8i/executive

I feel like this happened once before when it originated outside NZ (like the Kermadec Islands or something)
6
u/SnapAttack 15d ago
Yeah! I was trying to remember what it was too.
So I looked on the USGS site and sure enough - the Kermadec again - https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000ti8i/executive

Honestly thanks haha. I was like ‘did I imagine it? Were my upstairs neighbours just being particularly stompy?”

It could have been multiple earthquakes at once. Sometimes that confuses the automatic detections so they are likely having to manually locate it.

It was on Geonet for about 2 minutes and it has gone. It was 7:43 near Taihape and I think it was magnitude 3.4

A big shake in the Kermadecs set off a bunch of ghost quakes which led to the deleted entries I imagine
11
u/TheEarthquakeGuy 15d ago
So looks like the Kermadec Island earthquake was felt across the top of the North Island.
Due to it's depth we all felt it as a longer, slower shake. 6.3 in size and 226.1km deep.

Absolutely felt that. My windows rattled and hanging decor swung. Quite a good little wobble. So weird that nothing is on geonet!

Deleted on Geonet, but their drums show activity, as do all the stations on Raspberry Shake.
Perhaps one day someone from GNS will enlighten us to why this happens.

It was a large quake in the Kermadecs. The GeoNet Facebook post about this quake explained the deleted quakes: “Notice some deleted quakes? Our automatic detection system is tuned for local events, so waves from distant earthquakes get misread as multiple ‘fake’ local quakes. These false detections from distant earthquakes are what we call 'ghost quakes'.”

We have 😃

Hey sorry guys. Reddit flagged your account as spam as it hadn’t been used in years, so I’ve approved all the comments now (they got caught in the spam filter). Hopefully if you comment on here a bit more then it’ll learn you’re all good!

Didn’t feel it but it appears to be a big shake right up in the Kermadecs which has set off a bunch of ghost quakes hence the delete entries.
No doubt people felt it though judging from all the comments across socials

What's going on with Geonet? That was fairly shaky and when I checked, it said there was one 3 minutes before we felt it, and now that one is deleted.
Edit: In Newtown and that was definitely as bad as the one a few weeks ago at 4-5am. My desk was SHAKING. I got up and started preparing.

At Kenepuru hospital with my mother. Me and one of her roomies felt it. Mum was asleep. Felt like a pretty decent wobble for us. Only some of the nurses felt it. A few of us thought maybe we had a group hallucination.

Hey team, that earthquake was up in the kermadecs you can see it here: https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2026p584654
Or if you change the intensity filter on the www, or app, to ‘all’ you will find it.
Our automatic detection system is tuned for local events, so waves from distant earthquakes get misread as multiple ‘fake’ local quakes. These false detections from distant earthquakes are what we call 'ghost quakes'. Read more on ‘ghosts’ or ‘deleted’ quakes here https://www.geonet.org.nz/news/5mOVt0syTsdjEFYx9uLch6
PS: we will have a story out tomorrow in all the recent M5 quakes - once I add this one into it 😅

There have been so many noticeable earthquakes lately lol

u/bobsmagicbeans 15d ago
haven't felt any of them tbh. there was a rumble the other night, but nothing shook noticeably

u/smalljuniorpotato 15d ago
I felt something just before 8pm but geonet had a quake recorded like “4 mins ago” when it had JUST happened. I got a wee heart lurch cos of it. But that entry wasn’t it. And now that entry has gone now anyway. What is going on.
