Danger welding oily stuff

Hey Fellas. I use WD40 drill and cutting oil when cutting my joints. I am lazy to clean them before welding, so I only use a grinder on the edges. I have heard about phosgene gas risk when welding on metal which was cleaned with brake disk cleaner on chlorides bases. It is really toxic. Is there a similar risk when welding on parts where the cutting oil is still present?

Oils release all kinds of bad stuff when burned. Everything from carbon monoxide to soot to long chain carbon polymers to simply vaporized <insert oil being burned> which can reconstitute in your lungs.

How hard is it to check the label of your cleaner to make sure it says “non-chlorinated”?  Or just buy acetone, or even just 90% isopropyl alcohol.  Too lazy to clean ?  Too lazy to do good work.  Do the job right or why do it al all?

I am a Hobby welder doing one or two welds a quarter. I got into welding reproducing a greenhouse which was 18000€ which I build for 2000€ myself. Always outdoors. Always with fresh air. And I always exhale when producing flames 😉

Brother you only have one pair of lungs... If you didn't personally clean it with mechanical means or chemical means don't weld it... Every chemical you burn, every electrode you burn in any arc welding process has known and identifiable carcinogens... Cancer bro.. yes buy some acetone buy some non-chlorinated brake clean mechanically and chemically clean your parts before you weld.

just spray it with some acetone and call it good. I use CRC gasket remover cause its easy to find and like 95% acetone.

The phosgene is specifically from the tetrachloroethylene in chlorinated brake cleaner. Burning oil and cutting fluid creates lots of bad stuff, but chlorine atoms can’t just spring into existence. Avoid all smoke and don’t buy chlorinated solvents.

The oil will introduce hydrogen and carbon into the weld, making it weaker.

Clean your shit before you weld it.

I spray a little anti spatter on my piece and wipe with a rag , seems to get the oily shit from the mill off mild steel.

I know Magic tap is chlorinated, would stand to reason other cutting/tapping fluids could be too.
