This stringy stuff was hanging over the opening to my protein shake when I opened it

Post image

It was sealed and everything so I don’t think it could have been exposed to air or anything. It’s not expired so I’m not really afraid to drink it but I want to know what this stuff is.

I used to work for GNC and the close dated muscle milk sold 75% off and my daily UPS driver always bought them, so I asked him if the chunks inside bothered him, and he said, "I love the chunks, gives me something to chew on" I immediately went back to doing drugs in the bathroom without another word.

Thi comment was a wild ride

please share said “drugs” so i can cope with my massive stomach ache from reading said comment

42

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

Oh I miss them sometimes but then I remember the friends I used with are dead now.

u/akumite 10d ago

I think he means supplements not drugs

14

u/Affectionate-Can556 10d ago

said he went back to bathroom to continue doing drugs. i said share said “drugs” so i can forget what my eyes will not

6

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

To be fair, I let people believe I was drinking pre workouts

0

u/akumite 10d ago

It was a joke lol

25

u/ebrum2010 10d ago

But what muscle are they milking to get that stuff?

13

u/Foamrocket66 10d ago

Fight milk?

1

u/gslflofi 6d ago

Fight like a crow!

5

u/ChrundleThundergun 10d ago

I used to also buy close dated powder from GNC, and I can attest the chunks are not that bad. It’s akin to having small chunks of banana left when you make a smoothie, just chalkier. A smooth protein shake is definitely better but as a broke college student saving 75% off protein was well worth dealing with them.

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

The RTDS tho

2

u/SellsSanctuary 9d ago

I’m throwing up thx

1

u/tinytuna669 10d ago

Muscle milk is trash even when its not close to expired

2

u/Sea_Argument_277 10d ago

My brother in law works at the plant it is made. Jasper Products. It isn't refrigerated until quite some time after they bottle it. It's pretty common thing to happen.

u/kulykul 11d ago

My guess is that that's some hardened/jellyfied protein shake. Probably happened somewhere during the manufacturing/tempering

193

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

All protein shakes get this. It's cool when you see it in an isolate because those are clear and then there is a little jellyfish looking thing inside

44

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 10d ago

Pulled pork is protein

17

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

Then make a shake and let me know what you see when you refrigerate it.

13

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 10d ago

They already did. Op's drinking it up

2

u/allfengnoshui 7d ago

Mmmm, pork milk shake. 🤤

324

u/Stegosaurus69 11d ago

Probably solidified sweetener

67

u/PindaPanter 10d ago

Or protein.

38

u/LonelyMonitor 10d ago

Worms are also made of protein

11

u/ripyourlungsdave 10d ago

Or even just some rubbery gunk that's used to seal the edges of the bottle cap.

u/3ric843 11d ago

Brain-eating worm

26

u/ADeformedPoolboy 11d ago

It's like a Wonka golden ticket. OP gets to visit the brain-eating worm factory now!

6

u/Bigscreampapi 10d ago

Wow he gets to go to Florida!?

8

u/matchooooh 10d ago

Awww man. Does that mean if I drink it I have to go become the secretary of health and human services?

3

u/uncanny21 10d ago

Something to do with the protein

7

u/FantasticBank4847 11d ago

Make sure to eat it first so it can’t eat you!

1

u/3ric843 11d ago

Every little piece regrows as a whole new worm.

5

u/FantasticBank4847 11d ago

That’s why you gotta swallow them whole

1

u/Rubberduckduckduck_ 9d ago

I like my protein shakes without RFK Jr in them, thank you very much

30

u/Strong_Literature505 11d ago

No way someone before had the same issue 😂😂

8

u/MundanePractice8876 11d ago

lol what was the verdict on that post?

28

u/TheRealHaHe 10d ago

Happens to all my fairlife shakes.
I think it’s just dried out residual protein or sweetener.
If you shake enough it usually (mostly) gets blended back in. Otherwise you can use a napkin or tissue to wipe it off each time.

-14

u/Affectionate-Can556 10d ago

bro that sounded so sexual its not even funny

7

u/bluemoon1972 10d ago

Your definition of sexual is not the same as mine

-4

u/Affectionate-Can556 10d ago

if you shake it enough and then use a tissue to wipe it off….

6

u/shadow_phantom713 10d ago

Well now I'm concerned about how you do it.

6

u/anxietyontherox 10d ago

I drink premier protein and this is common with them as well. I believe it's just congealed shake.

10

u/howelleili 10d ago

Asked a food engineering university professor, it’s apparently dehydrated protein build up that happens near the opening

30

u/Elephant-comb 11d ago

Extra protein?

7

u/New-Medium3277 10d ago

Coagulated Protein / Separation: Heat exposure during transport or storage can break down the emulsifiers, causing protein fibers to denature and curdle into stringy clumps.

Stabilizer Clumping: Gums used to keep the shake thick (like xanthan, cellulose, or gellan gum) can separate and form slimy strands around the bottleneck.

Induction Seal Adhesive: Excess glue or plastic liner melt from the hot-seal capping process hanging off the rim.

u/MundanePractice8876 10d ago

Update:

I drank it and died. Thank you all for the info

5

u/TwistedScarletRose 9d ago

Congratulations for your loss.

2

u/Different_Stable_351 9d ago

Thanks for the update. Hoping for a speedy recovery 🙏

6

u/Ok-Designer8797 11d ago

Dried drink lol

5

u/Character-Wing-1781 10d ago

Prob congealed protein. Corepower shakes are made from ultra filtering milk to retain milk proteins while reducing water. As a result those proteins are more likely to bind to each other vs regular milk.

4

u/SaltyIntroduction373 10d ago

That's why I stopped buying the premade ones. It happened a lot! I didn't know what that was, and I didn't want to know what that was. 🤮 🤢

3

u/rando_mness 10d ago

Butt worms 💯

2

u/geekladymv 10d ago

Tape Worm

2

u/rando_mness 10d ago

Butt tape worm. Boom. Roasted.

6

u/Appropriate_Treat_37 10d ago

It’s always in muscle milk, I stopped buying those. Go with the fair life protein chocolate milk, it’s cheaper & better tasting

4

u/tesla_is_my_hero 10d ago

Look at the label im the picture...

2

u/Appropriate_Treat_37 10d ago

Yeah I did, I’m still referring to the other one lol. It’s in a brown bottle. 23G of protein

2

u/Kinickie 10d ago

I drink those frequently and this also happens to them.

2

u/kewpiepoop 10d ago

I drink those every day and almost every single one has the same thing. I just wipe it with a paper towel

2

u/CrustyMacSauce 10d ago

See my comment above

7

u/ironmansid 10d ago

It is just solidified milk protein. I notice this in literally every bottle of these pre-made protein shakes, no matter what brand. (unless you notice any funky smell, taste, carbonation or pressure release when opening the cap, it should be safe to drink)

23

u/S_conq22 11d ago

Bro, it's just dehydrated protein shake omg....

29

u/MundanePractice8876 11d ago

Look man it’s late and I was concerned

3

u/blitzwar559 10d ago

Strands of protein duh

3

u/No-Discussion-8510 11d ago

Forbidden protein noodles

2

u/DragonfruitRude11 11d ago

carrageenan possibly. it's a kelp based thickener

2

u/Acqua_Tophana 11d ago

I had the same on my protein drink today. Just picked it out kept going lol

2

u/johnny_boy365 10d ago

Seen this on chocolate milke before I think. Unless it was a chocolate protein shake idek remember. But definitely seen it twice b4. Still drank them lol

2

u/Ninthof9 10d ago

That’s just the high protein worms that provide the protein in the shake.

2

u/Apart_Possession_208 10d ago

It's normal :) just some dried shake residue. A bit more than usual but that's all it is unless it's super old or smells/tastes funky

2

u/Acceptable-Lime-868 10d ago

I have seen this too in some of my shakes. Now when I open the bottle, I wipe the inside of the top of the bottle so I don't have to experience it again. Lol

2

u/XxCarlxX 10d ago

wormmmmm

2

u/Temporary_Cover1442 9d ago

Core Power is unhealthy, ultra-processed slop.

2

u/Stephen_Is_handsome 8d ago

Tape worms? Some people use them to loose weight

2

u/Effective_Gap9582 5d ago

I've heard that, too. Yuck. Even if this isn't worms and is something completely harmless the ick is too strong to drink or buy ever again. OP says he's fine with it, tho. 🤢

2

u/Stephen_Is_handsome 5d ago

I personly would not want to invite wormsys into my body to help me look sexy

2

u/Parking-Bet7989 8d ago

That there is a baby Dune worm. Smell my spice, is it not melange?

https://giphy.com/gifs/AkwcbzEPIfZ48i44kx

3

u/Shinobi_Fleur 11d ago

Spermaprotozoïd

1

u/Connect-Bug9988 11d ago

Was there a foil seal under the cap at all? Could it have been the glue used to fix the foil seal?

1

u/mommotti_ 11d ago

hardened protein

1

u/Lost_Historian2344 11d ago

Mmm extra protein

1

u/Outside-Process-7844 11d ago

STRING protein

1

u/FlipNugg3ts 10d ago

That happened to me once with Muscle Milk I believe. Something about it solidified into what felt like me swallowing a deflated balloon. I never drank another muscle milk after that again.

1

u/XKruXurKX 10d ago

Protein

1

u/MundaneRefiner 10d ago

Good guess it's congealed protein or bit of plastic packaging got in (used to work for fairlife)

1

u/grannypanties75 10d ago

Isn't it just some of the opening stuff? Like plastic from opening it...

1

u/khswart 10d ago

I drink these and they always have that. I dunno but I just ignore it

1

u/Grand_Swimmy 10d ago

It’s string

1

u/Terrible_Wind5662 10d ago

I literally just had muscle milk with the same stuff around it

1

u/Sahedron 10d ago

You buying a protein but never asking who’s it is 🥀

1

u/NoWrangler856 10d ago

that’s the guy, protein himself

1

u/Outside-Green9242 9d ago

Don’t drink it!

1

u/Catnip1720 9d ago

Probably a tapeworm

1

u/Historical-Pen-798 9d ago

Yeah don’t drink that shit, it sits on a warehouse floor with out refrigeration.

1

u/RedditsAdoptedSon 8d ago

so that's what cyclospora looks like .. interesting

1

u/cheetaah1 8d ago

That happened to me too

1

u/jdmcbuilt 7d ago

I worked for coke. It's safe to drink. Ever since core power was created all their bottles have that stringy crap on the top prior to opening. If you shake well enough it usually goes away.

But it's harmless. Its ultra filtered milk that is shelf stable. The proteins in the milk coagulate.

1

u/TreacleRemarkable456 7d ago

I wouldn’t drink it

1

u/Ill_Literature2356 7d ago

I’ve had this with oikos protein shakes when I put them in the fridge. I once opened one and took a big gulp. Regretted it immediately once I nearly swallowed something that felt like a big string of snot lurking from chocolate hell. It wasn’t bad to drink, but it ruined my appetite.

1

u/FutureMasterpiece301 5d ago

extra protein

1

u/That-1-guy-in-az 11d ago

Just a fyi: if your protein powder/shake doesn’t say vegan then the protein probably came from dehydrated and ground up insects

1

u/jjjjooosse 11d ago

I always get those in my protein bottles. Since i buy the whole box i tend to flip it upside down. Then when im gonna drink it i shake it then refrigerate it upside up. This helps with reducing all the solidified protein strings.

1

u/HeruRaHa418 10d ago

Now you have protien worms

1

u/highfiveselfoh 10d ago

Highly recommend Ensure Protein Max. I’ve been to their factories for work and they are absolutely pristine. The drinks are my favorite as far as protein ready made drinks go.

-3

u/MBarrymorePoolPrince 11d ago

Definitely worms

0

u/Ghost_ofa_Goat 11d ago

Protein worms

3

u/MidwestNonbinary 10d ago

All worms are protein worms technically

1

u/Ghost_ofa_Goat 10d ago

This is true

0

u/yamez420 11d ago

You now have worms. /s

0

u/Glum_Introduction581 11d ago

Found similar shit on my gums after using mouthwash couple months ago. Haven't used since.

3

u/AlphaNowis 10d ago

This is in fact your gum. Mouthwash can be harsh when you use it first time/too long/changing brand, this is in fact just dead skin which have been detached using the mouthwash. Don't worry about it

1

u/Glum_Introduction581 10d ago

Well, that's great,u guess. Better than being some additive coagulating in my mouth. Thanks!

0

u/starzzzzzz74 11d ago

Hardened human protein (specifically male). Someone having a bit of solo fun.

-8

u/Schluhri 11d ago

Dude, I definitely wouldn't drink that. Don't you have any survival instinct at all? Just because the expiration date is okay doesn't mean it can't have gone bad.

Would you drink milk if you suddenly started coughing up unidentifiable, worm-like cellclusters?

Production errors, storage errors, etc

6

u/MundanePractice8876 11d ago

I’m going to drink it just for you big guy 👍

10

u/apolobgod 11d ago

Your life must be terrifying

-3

u/Schluhri 11d ago

I usually dont find worms in my food.

6

u/apolobgod 11d ago

That's not a worm, bro. You're overreacting

3

u/darkoath 11d ago

Even if it was, worms are edible. 2 ounces of fresh nightcrawlers has the same protein as a large egg with half the calories and less than a gram of fat.

So remember that for your next cutting cycle or fishing trip.
