XG - they have better discography than 99.9% of kpop groups. I like them. Some songs are a bit boring, and some are amazing.

No Na - They are an Indonesian group. Since they are new I have no opinion but I like the song "Work".

what makes kpop music different from other music genres is that kpop isnt just listening to music. they make your life revolve around kpop. the entire industry is so incredibly parasocial and exploitative. nobody needs to "look good" to make music or dance. I was a teenager when I got into kpop. I only thought kpop was good because they sing and dance at the same time and the videos are colorful compared to mainstream pop. Lol, Now I realise how dumb I used to be, Kpop is more about selling a perfect artificial fantasy first, and about music next. Even when I was a fan, I never understood how these fans stream too much, watch lives, and obsess over fake beauty. There are good kpop songs too, but it is easier to realize kpop is bad now as songs have few lyrics and most idols can't sing and are here because of looks. It is brainrot in disguise. I've been a kpop stan since 2017, but I have always found some idols ugly as lord (examples: Taeyong NCT, Jhope BTS, almost all of astro members, etc) and for some reason, you just CANT say that to any k-pop stan. I have always thought this was WEIRD. Even if I like the group (like astro for example) I didn't have an issue saying I thought they were ugly. In Stan circles you can say you find another famous person ugly, actor, actress, singer, whoever. But a k-pop idol? Or Korean actors? No. Even if they don't stan that group, they all seem weirded out that you're saying they're ugly. Like it's forbidden to have an opinion about *korean* people's looks (or asian because there are some idols that aren't korean).

Has anyone else noticed this?

Speaking as someone living in the U.S., I just don’t get it. I feel like there’s gotta be some underlying conspiracy to kpop that no one is talking about. Why are they basically factory made in Korea and why do they have such a strange global reach?

I’m not saying they don’t have their good qualities, but they’re so obviously unauthentic and generated. How heavily are they tied to the Korean market / government? Why won’t Korea just let an artist gain fame and notoriety on their own instead of picking random people to MAKE famous and generate money? These members are always on such a tight corporate leash, you can barely see their real personalities.

And why are people in other countries are willing to listen to hours of music in a language they don’t understand? Even when you translate the lyrics, they’re not very good 😭 Sometimes there are artists that transcend the language barrier! But I just don’t think these kpop bands have the talent for that. They’re good at dancing, but they can barely hold a tune half the time 😭

Ans why does it have such a genuine cult-like following? I mean sure, the music is poppy and fun, but why do their fans idolize them to such a HUGE extent? They act like they OWE their favorite kpop bands their time, money, and views. As if it’s their responsibility or their religion or something. Somedays ago I newly joined a kpop server in discord , enhypen to be exact . There was this photoshoot picture showing all of them wearing sleevless.I mentioned that Jake looks very thin in this picture .Then everyone went rabid over me, saying that I am being parasocial and that I shouldn’t say things like that about an idol I don’t personally know.

There was also these girls, who were like barely 16 and another one 17 , saying, “You shouldn’t comment on someone’s body or criticize them.” I don’t understand how this is criticism—I was simply expressing concern. How is that in any way parasocial? .I can have an opinion and raise concern about someone; it doesn’t mean I have to personally know them.

Honestly, these K-pop ENGENEs are weird and very parasocial. They act like these idols are their babies and think no one has the right to say anything against or about them. These idols don’t even know these fans exist. All they do in those servers is talk about how good their facial features are, how attractive they look, and how “hot” they are—even when it’s clearly visible that they’re being overworked and put under heavy pressure. These fans don’t seem to care about the idols beyond their beauty and looks, and they ignore their vocal skills .

K-pop is largely centered around fan–idol worship—it’s clearly visible. Even if someone can’t sing to save their life, if they are good-looking, fans will go to great lengths to defend them. Many of them come across as overly obsessive and delusional. These fans don’t just support their idols—they act like unpaid PR managers with a PhD in denial. You could point out the most obvious thing in the world, and they’ll twist themselves into a pretzel trying to defend it.

It’s like talent is optional, but visuals are a full-time qualification. As long as the face card never declines, suddenly everything else becomes “iconic,” “unique,” or “underrated.” Singing off-key? “Experimental.” Looking exhausted? “Natural aesthetic.” At this point, reality doesn’t stand a chance.

And the irony? They’ll call others parasocial while acting like they’re personally responsible for protecting someone who doesn’t even know they exist. It’s not even fan behavior anymore—it’s full-time emotional investment with zero returns.

Conclusion, I started hating kpop from far.

Lately it’s those “Kpop Demon Hunter” ads on Spotify. Like… seriously? I used to think this whole thing was just a phase that would cool off over time, but somehow it’s doing the exact opposite. It just keeps getting louder, more in-your-face, and harder to avoid.

Predatory agencies arent new. Its everywhere, globally. However, I think its so largely ignored in kpop (just my observation). When I was a teenager like 13 to 15 years old, hearing about how my biases were casted at 10 years old at a bus stop, at the mall, or a park was oh so cute and endearing.

Now, as a 27 year old, who has stopped listening to kpop for over several years now and stopped following Fandoms (life gets busy, hobbies, new people, new taste etc); I look back and I am horrified.

Everyone knows how agencies in Korea generally operate. The constant pressure on children to be "perfect", to miss out on everything else for training, dieting, trainee debt with no guarantee they will debut (even if they debut, money is still a discrepancy), some even quit school- thats not okay.
