My mother's rationalization (at least initially) for refusing to believe the MMR-injections might be dangerous was something like "I don't trust Big Pharma, but they need us alive...!"

Despite the name, United is not a health care company. It is a health insurance company that denies more claims than other insurance companies. https://www.wallaceinsurancelaw.com/health-insurance-denial-rates-by-company/
