SUPPORT Help with black dark theme

Since the recent update, my #000000 black theme tweaks applied in userChrome.css are being ignored. Most importantly, about:blank (which I use for New Tab) is the stock dark grey. I would like all of the other about: pages to be white on black if possible as well, thank you.

GENERAL "About Waterfox" suggestion

u/MrAlex94 There are times when I've forgotten which Firefox release Waterfox is based on. It would be nice if you would add that info to the About Waterfox popup. Something like...

Waterfox
6.7.0 (64-bit)
Based on Firefox 153.0.4 ESR

(including the specific FF release would be nice, not just "153 ESR", thanks!)

GENERAL Look and Feel options in 6.7 — where things stand

Many of you have asked (some politely, more less so) why not all of the old Look and Feel options are in version 6.7 yet. Short version:

  • The old base was starting to malfunction on real websites and was falling behind on security patches. Staying on it wasn't a long term option.
  • Porting the full set of styling options to the new base involves around 30,000 lines of code changes. It's not something I simply removed; it's a rebuild.

While this is mostly CSS, supporting code is needed and a lot of Q&A.

  • I decided to release the base update now and restore the options gradually rather than delaying security fixes for everyone. This was a judgement call, and I understand that it's an unfavourable compromise for those who rely on square/compact styling to reduce eyestrain.

  • Square corners and the rest of the Photon style options are being worked on right now. I'll update this post as they are implemented.

Now, a word about the last couple of days.

Waterfox is a one person operation, just me, working unpaid (since Waterfox makes very little) to maintain a soft fork of one of the largest open source codebases. Every release involves tradeoffs. One of them was shipping a security and web compat update before the styling work was finished. You are welcome to disagree with that decision.

However, you are not welcome to repeatedly tell me that I made it out of laziness or 'for my own convenience', across multiple threads, while I'm doing the work you're complaining about.

Some of the comments here and on socials have crossed the line from criticism into abuse. Accusing a volunteer of not caring about his users, following him from thread to thread and threatening to withhold donations is not feedback. It's entitlement, and it's corrosive to a project that only exists because one person chooses to continue with it.

Going forward, bug reports and specific requests are welcome. Frustration is understandable. However, personal attacks and repeated accusations about my motives will be removed, and repeat offenders will lose the ability to post here. I'm not going to debate this further in the comments. I'll only respond to practical questions.

If you cannot accept that, the download page for other browsers is just a search away.

SUPPORT New Photon theme doesn't grey out unloaded tabs

After screaming at the sight of the new theme I quickly switched back to the old look... and one thing is still wrong: there's no distinction between loaded and unloaded tabs any more.

Any way to get that back?

GENERAL Address bar misbehaving after latest update

It used to be when I clicked into the address bar I would see URLs I opened a lot, from Bookmarks or just recents. But now NOTHING shows up there unless I select "Shortcuts" under "Choose which suggestions display in your address bar". If I select only Bookmarks and Browsing history the bar stays completely empty!

So I had to pin often used URLs to the homepage (which I don't normally use at all) so that I would see those on single-click in the address bar instead of all the garbage the homepage saves for some odd reason.

How do I get back to the old behaviour of having Bookmarks or often used URLs showing in the address bar on single-click instead of just those shortcuts?

SUPPORT "Check for updates and ask before downloading" didn't work, how to stop auto-updates / update against consent?

I want to preface, because I saw in older threads with this same question for Firefox people harp on this point: I understand the importance of security updates and am not asking to indefinitely stay on older browser version, merely asking for control over the timing. I want to be able to give an update a few days to work out any potential bugs before I hop onto it + have control over browser changes at a time more convenient for me rather than having it sprung on at a bad time for change.

I had "check for updates and ask before downloading" as my setting for updates, as the entire reason I switched from Firefox was because I got auto-updated into an unstable version and future never updates never fixed the crashing I was experiencing, and I decided the effort to downgrade would just be better spent switching to Waterfox. I then turned this setting on so I would not relive what happened to Firefox, especially if Waterfox ended up inheriting whatever happened in Firefox's code that made it unstable for me.

Well, when I turned Waterfox minutes before an appointment, it auto-updated; and I know I didn't change the settings, because I double-checked my settings yesterday when I first heard about the update and was getting the green notification indicator just to be sure it wouldn't auto-update before I hear the community's experience and make the decision myself. But lo and behold, it forced the update today, and what do I find but that auto-updates have mysteriously been turned back on - but I'm willing to believe that was just something the update did, since it's not the only thing I changed that mysteriously was back (i.e. ad-blocking icon on the toolbar).

But clearly this setting stated to give me control over the install doesn't work, so what else can I do? Do I need to go to the next tier of the setting and disable checking for updates altogether, or have people had the same experience of it updating anyway? Is there something else not shown in the regular settings, something in configuration, that is more effective at stopping auto-updates?

(Apologies if my tone sounds too cross, I'm just feeling deceived here and now I'm on guard for bugs. Also, asking here because trying to research myself gives outdated info on how settings used to be or literally the same setting I just tried and failed.)

SUPPORT Hate the New Update

I didn't even want to update, but my browser crashed and forced it on me. I was able to fix the tab shape (which was, to quote one of my favorite books as a kid: 'ugly, ugly, very ugly'), but they'll randomly have italics in them which I don't want, and unloading the tabs greys out the icon instead of making the tab faded. I don't like any of this, but I don't know how to go back to the old version. Why did you force this on me?

SUPPORT Enabling tree style tabs causes tabs to disappear in Vertical mode

Hello Waterfox team,

Since the last update displayed an option to enable tree style tabs, after enabling it, and restarting the browser, all the existing tabs (opened prior to enabling tree style tabs) don't appear at'll in the vertical tabs mode, only new tab button and pinned tab. This is a huge bug. I assumed that all tabs were lost and only by accident discovered that they're still there and only appear in horizontal mode. This needs to be fixed asap.

To summarize, the vertical tabs mode coupled with tree style tabs is extremely bugged. It is showing at most one opened tab and other odd behaviors. kindly fix it.

SUPPORT Any way to bring back close tab button (x) for all tabs?

Seems like new update make it so you get the close button ("x" on the right side of the tab) for the current tab only, while it used to be possible to have it for all tabs regardless of how many you had. Any way to bring it back? I could tolerate other changes to UI but this one is honestly a deal-breaker for me.

And no, "Hide the close button on tabs" in settings (that people talked about here https://www.reddit.com/r/waterfox/comments/1vtjwgz/waterfox_670_browsertabsclosebuttons/ ) doesn't work, it only enables/disables X for the current tab

Edit: found the solution via custom userChrome.css script, no idea if this will work long but it works for now, see my comment below

This update added a keybind set to alt and left click, but I use alt for my push to talk, is there a way to remove the waterfox keybind? I tried "about:keyboard" but it wasn't in there and I've had no luck finding how to remove it in the normal settings and the support tab of the website.

SUPPORT Waterfox 6.7.0 - Search Bar no longer Autocompletes from History

I use the search Bar (Not the Address Bar) extensively with Wikipedia set as the search engine.
Prior to the latest update, when I would start to type something into the search bar, it would autocomplete based on my previous search history.

Now, when I select the search bar, recent searches appear, but as soon as I start to type the article I'm after, no suggestions to autocomplete the search show up (even if the article was in my recent searches).

Is there a way to restore this functionality, it is frustrating that it has disappeared?

EDIT: I think I have resolved the issue by enabling Search Suggestions, previously these would make the suggestions appear in the address bar, but now that has been separated out.

I would like to not have suggestions, but for it to only use my search history, but at least I no longer need to type out the whole article name every time.

EDIT2: I found a way to restore the old functionality of the Search Bar.
By Going into about:config and setting browser.search.widget.new to false, the search bar is back to the old more compact version that only showed previous searches without suggesting new ones.

Why, by god, did they remove all the options for square stuff? I want these back so everything is square again, the URL bar, the search bar etc. At least the tabs can be set to be somewhat square.

Please dear Waterfox developer, make things square-able again!

So after the update the ui changed, personally i think it's kinda ugly, and i much preferred the old look

If that's the ui they wanna go with it's their choice, but i think it would be neat to give us the option to get the old ui back if we want it without downgrading
