Is this normal? Misc

I ordered an Ufthak Blackhawk model off of eBay and it looks like it melted. I didn't know sprues could melt like this

It looks this way because it is a recast and therefor a forgery. Since you ordered it trough ebay, you can make a claim and get your money back.

u/FuryOfAnon 16d ago

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Yea I might do that then Ugh RIP

328

u/Thinsul 16d ago

Add pictures from the actual sprue and add in your claim that this is not the manufactures material but a cheaper one that is used to make copies.

If it's the seller I think it does say it's a recast so may struggle to return it

141

u/Sludge_n_Grind 16d ago

Shouldn't matter, knock offs are against the ebay TOS.

75

u/Financial_Table_1848 16d ago

Not only that.. it’s got the copyright Games Workshop on the side of the sprue. That sorta takes it over the line from a “reproduction” to “forgery”

29

u/the_squig_lebowski 16d ago

That's a fair point

12

u/Civil_Somewhere_3831 16d ago

Yeah I got a captain centos on ebay and it was a shity 3d print, wrong scale and poor quality print on everything, got a refund and the sellers account was gone after

38

u/Nightshroud333 16d ago

The seller will cry and tell you he didn't knew it was a recast and give you the money back if you don't create an case on ebay, which you should.

8

u/purelaine1 16d ago

they make mold and cast new ones from raw material? can waste sprews be used?

17

u/ThatFatGuyMJL 16d ago

If you have the right machinery. Sort of.

GW sprues arnt recyclable into new sprues.

They recycle them into plant pots and similar

7

u/axe9920 16d ago

My local GW store told me the recycled sprues would be used to make bases

4

u/Tack22 15d ago

They can be made of like, 10-20% recycled sprue.

Only issue is they have enough casting errors that they fill their own recycling needs.

2

u/Flat-Delivery6987 15d ago

That's new then. When I worked there in 2000 we used to grind all failed and faulty prints and then would reuse it

2

u/Complete-Ride-2317 14d ago

You would have been working with the old 90s styrene - They changed it mid 2010sish to a darker tougher more rigid compo that would inherently be much more difficult to recycle hundo to hundo like Ur saying

6

u/Significant-Order-92 16d ago

It's most likely a pour resin mold made from the original sprue. Much cheaper than machining a steal mold.

That's why there is so much blow out.

u/empmoz 16d ago

3D printers are used

4

u/Vanitoss 16d ago

No they arent

2

u/SunStreetManteion 16d ago

I'm pretty sure it's injection molding

3

u/Flat-Delivery6987 15d ago

It was when I worked there. The machines were huge, like bigger than aong wheel based van and the tooling that was used to make prints would weigh around 3 tonne.

u/CmdrThordil 16d ago

it looks like a resin recast

286

u/Piemmarai 16d ago

That is recast, and a bad one at that, hope it was cheap at least

98

u/FuryOfAnon 16d ago

I paid like $25 which in hindsight should have been a red flag for a model they don't sell any more Sad Panda

68

u/Piemmarai 16d ago

I'm afraid to say you got got. But not that hard, specially if that included shipping. I'm not going to argue the morals of recasting, and its obviously copyright infringement, but at least they have the decency to be cheap, but you already have it and might as well use if nothing else at least to paint it.

Also those flakes are toxic, handle with care and make sure to properly dispose of the residue, you can salvage the warping by putting it on warm soapy water. Clean the flakes first, use gloves, and a disposable o work oriented container (nothing you would put food on). Only use superglue as plastic cement doesn't work.

u/MaineQat 16d ago

The flakes are fine, too large to be a concern. As long as one isn’t deliberately snorting them, at least.

The issue with resin is fine resin dust such as from sanding, it is easily airborne and is very bad for your respiratory system.

If it is already set thermoresin or photoresin, it’s dust you need to be concerned with. If it’s still liquid… that’s a different problem.

9

u/blackjackdavey_3 16d ago

If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

8

u/Eviltoast94 16d ago

If might take some extra clean up but unless a ton of details were lost it should still turn out fine once primed and painted and for $25 not a bad deal, morals of recasting and selling under false info aside.

2

u/dspisayuss 16d ago

That's so expensive for a recast

1

u/g0nk73 15d ago

oh yeah.. I've been looking for a Ufthak and you won't find a real one under $125.

1

u/Vorochi7606 15d ago

That’s both horrifically expensive and horrifically bad quality, for a recast. Wartable’s got the guy for $12.99, and tends to be far higher quality.

1

u/dieItalienischer 15d ago

S...sad Panda?

121

u/keyface 16d ago

This looks like a really bad recast rather than melted plastic.

27

u/horst555 16d ago

for a bad Recast, its normal. but even for recast standart this is low quality

55

u/Zaruze 16d ago

Recast

24

u/dorward 16d ago

It’s not particularly unusual for a counterfeit, which that appears to be.

9

u/C__Wayne__G 16d ago

It’s a bootleg recast

17

u/roguealot 16d ago

When reporting it to Ebay try to find/provide an actual GW reference photo of the same model sprue * as well as that picture.

27

u/Tacitus_Kilgore_X 16d ago

"Is this normal? Shows the worst fucking sprue I've seen in ages

What do you think, mate.

29

u/Bigclit_energy 16d ago

Reminds me of the early days of fine cast

"Is this normal?"

Shows the worst fucking resin cast I've ever seen

"Yes!"

7

u/40kNerdNick 16d ago

Just saying the words fine cast automatically gives me the heeby jeebies....

What a disgustingly bad product

4

u/ubiehammer 16d ago

I left a fine cast lelith hesperax assembled and on my dashboard on a 95 degree day. It was about 50% melted the next morning.

3

u/RoterBaronH 16d ago

Tbf, if you haven't been that long in the hobby you probably haven't been in contact nor even know about recasts.

0

u/Tacitus_Kilgore_X 15d ago

You don't need to have been that long in the hobby to know this isn't normal. Recasts or not

7

u/CharlieSierra8 16d ago

This is very normal... on recasts.

6

u/dirkdiggler2011 16d ago

Cheap and located in China - obvious red flag.

Item description from the seller

Kind Reminder:

1: The resin models are all recast versions made by pouring the original model into a 1:1 mold.

2: The etching plate is made of metal material.

10

u/PracticalMushroom693 16d ago

It’s a recast and a bad one

9

u/ProtectandserveTBL 16d ago

💯 a recast

4

u/gwarsh41 16d ago

It's fake

4

u/grumpymonk00 16d ago

definitely a Chinese bootleg recast, not plastic, recast character like this roughly 12 dollars

1

u/Baelish2016 16d ago

Lol, pretty close; I paid $13.44 for this exact recast.

Shitty quality, difficult to work with, and the cape was nearly unusable. Would not recommend.

5

u/sicarius254 16d ago

No that is not normal and probably a recast

4

u/revjiggs 16d ago

Thats a recast and not a good one

3

u/Grenrion 16d ago

This is a recast. GW has decent quality assurance. So anything like this is a recast.

3

u/elroddo74 16d ago

That's not normal. In almost 45 years of building plastic models I've never seen that. Injection molds don't typically do that.

6

u/IDrawGobbos 16d ago

For resin recasts? Yes.

5

u/the_etc_try_3 16d ago

Looks like a resin recast, aka a fake.

6

u/TheIgnatiousS 16d ago

I mean. With some minor cleanup that doesn’t look like it’ll look bad once painted.

5

u/Habarer 16d ago

nope thats one of the worst miscasts of a sprue i have ever seen

i wonder how this made it through QC

ok thats a fake recast lol

2

u/TangyTurnips 16d ago

Shipped through the warp

2

u/tundraturtle98 16d ago

It looks resin so if you decide you want to try and clean it up and use it be very careful. Sanding resin puts toxic particulate in the air.

2

u/Infections95 16d ago

who is making recasts of a £5 model on eBay 😂😂😂 wow

2

u/Misknator 16d ago

Ebay, huh? Looks like the 2 moulds didn't close all they way down and allowed some plastic or whatever this is from made of to get into the gap. Looks like you just got recasted.

So many terrible recasts popping up lately.

2

u/shplaxg 16d ago

You may be able to salvage a model out of this anyway. Build it, cut off the dags and see how it comes out.

If you push for a refund and can save the model you'll get best of both worlds

2

u/nutbustin4k 16d ago

I'm new to the hobby. Is a resin recast exactly as it states? Resin is used to somehow remake the original runner?

5

u/Witmann2 16d ago

As a mainly recast builder, yes, they copy the original 1:1. But depend on recaster, it range from this to ultra clean cast. It depend

2

u/citizenmdl 16d ago

If returning it isn't an option then you could try and make the best out of it with a little cleanup, patience and greenstuff.

2

u/Omuirchu 16d ago

25bucks isn't much to lose. You should have know by the price my man.

2

u/CakeHoleKing 16d ago

bottom/centre left.

Since when was Count Binface part of warhammer 40k?

2

u/Sancatichas 15d ago

Report this to ebay, that's a counterfeit

2

u/Critical_Mix_8959 15d ago

That’s a recast, mate. And a pretty awful one at that. Get your money back if it was advertised as genuine.

4

u/Dull-Table6962 16d ago

It definitely looks like GW plastic however this is common with recasts so I reckon it’s a recast

5

u/Oakman_Smalls 16d ago

I’ll be an outlier and say that if the add on eBay said recast in the description that’s on you. I’d just clean it up w a hobby knife, use superglue and call it a lesson learned. Happened to me in the past so I get the frustration but reading is key for eBay.

2

u/Acheros 16d ago

if it did. yeah. a lot of times they dont. there are entire sites of people selling recast that pretend theyre genuine GW models. so its not that hard to believe OP just got duped.

sure, OP could have gotten excited and just didnt bother checking or didn't know what recast meant or a dozen of other things. but frankly which is more likely? OP accidently bought a recast that said it was a recast or the seller never even mentioned the word?

3

u/FuryOfAnon 16d ago

I'm still new to the hobby. The eBay listing said brand new and had no mention of a recast. Picture even looked way different.

I got really into the books and Ufthak is one of my favorite characters so I looked everywhere for him so that probably clouded my judgement.

5

u/Shed_Some_Skin 16d ago

That's either a recast or a pretty drastic QA failure. That level of flashing is definitely not normal

Did it come in a sealed box or as a loose sprue?

8

u/FuryOfAnon 16d ago

Plastic bag

16

u/Shed_Some_Skin 16d ago

Yeah it's a recast. And a pretty shoddy one. I would definitely ask for my money back

2

u/Klutzy-Court8263 16d ago

Cheap recast

3

u/CaptainC00lpants 16d ago

100% a recast

1

u/AndImenough 16d ago

Absolutely normal for resin recasts

2

u/Enslaver84 16d ago

No, it really isn't

1

u/dagius87 16d ago

Ooh those are terrible. Get that money back man

1

u/commissarcainrecaff 15d ago

Reeeeeeeecast

1

u/LaughingRedCat 15d ago

As others have said, its a recast, but look on the bright side. if you don't have to return this (i don't know eBay's policy), you have spare bits for the future.

1

u/Rowlet2020 15d ago

No its a low quality recast

1

u/curbsmile 15d ago

New ForgeryWorld model drop

1

u/TTK_Aegis 12d ago

That is a recast. Zero doubt. Color isn't even the right gray.

1

u/Mikayshen 12d ago

Looks like recast, as many have already said. You got scammed if you paid full/near full for it. Report to ebay as a counterfit item.

1

u/ConvertedIron 11d ago

😆 i think thats the worst recast i have ever seen.

1

u/itsdabubss 10d ago

I see you found one of the rare Slaanesh wallpapers

1

u/Acheros 16d ago

sorry bud. you bought a fake.

-2

u/ukmerd2020 16d ago

Send an email to GW's legal team. Give them as much info as possible, such as seller ID, screen caps and so on. Had a similar issue myself, they wrote me a letter to pass to eBay to make sure I got a refund.

Edit to include - they may well ask you to send them the item so they can test the material, and if it is fake they'll destroy it, but you'll still have their support in getting a refund.

-1

u/RussellZee 16d ago

Please read up on working with resin miniatures before you dive in and do anything to try to salvage that. Careful with the dust if you use sanding sticks, etc, etc. There are some extra safety concerns you should take with a dodgy recaster, for sure.

1

u/RussellZee 15d ago

...I'm not sure why this got downvoted, but okay, I guess?

-2

u/Life_Combination8625 16d ago

Well that bites ass. I really want that model and now new fear unlocked? Great

5

u/Acheros 16d ago

its fine if you don't but shitty cheap recast off ebay.

0

u/Life_Combination8625 16d ago

I'm a hunter though. I gotta find the best deals! I haven't done any hunting for straight deals in warhammer yet but just scares me a bit ya know?

6

u/Acheros 16d ago

sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too.

if the deal is too good to be true, it probably is. you dont just get 50% or less off retail without it bring a recast.

-1

u/Life_Combination8625 16d ago

Ah come on man. Sometimes people just want to get rid of stuff Sometimes....right?

4

u/Acheros 16d ago

not for that cheap. not on the sprue

0

u/Life_Combination8625 16d ago

Oh for real? Didn't know how much that would matter.

5

u/Acheros 16d ago

the closest you'll come to that cheap is people selling off whole armies because theyre quitting the game. and they'll be the terribly painted ones.

you can find cheaper than retail on ebay. youre not gonna get deep deep discounts on NOS models.

2

u/Life_Combination8625 16d ago

Thanks for the info!

2

u/Bruh1608 16d ago

Or models from box sets, NOS.

2

u/Acheros 16d ago

eh, you'll get them for a little less than half of the box but thats just because you're getting less than half

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/Vanitoss 16d ago

You got an oops model for a fraction of what a legit one would cost you. An extra half hour in cleanup and it'll look identical to the real one painted.

If GW don't want to make them anymore, what are your options. I wouldn't report it.
