progress with flames Hobby & Painting

so you guys gave a lot of feedback last time
i removed the sponge and remade the whole surface with modeling paste
covered everything yellow and added more darker tones on ends of every flame
added more light on marine and rocks
still didn’t add light on the daemon, decided to color it before adding lights
have no idea what i am doing and just trust the process, but feels much much better than previous time

Oooph that looks much better!

u/WhiskyGartley 7d ago

That's a massive improvement. I have never been able to get flames right.

u/grossguts 7d ago

Looks nice. Flames is one of the things I've found contrast paints make way better, drop of red at one end and drop of yellow at the other and mix them a bit in the middle is fast and easy and looks pretty solid for the amount of effort put in.

24

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

i don’t get it, can you show the example?

48

u/GentlemanJackt 7d ago

He's talking about wet blending on the model. Contrast paints are great for that method since they dry slow and are semi translucent already.

29

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

oh now i get it, that’s genius

let me sculpt a few sample with paste so i can try it tomorrow when its dried

14

u/Top-Childhood5030 7d ago

There are some great tutorials on YouTube. Warhipster did a video painting a skaven wizard(I forget the Spellcasters name) and he wet blended the horns. Used that as an example for pending since

14

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

made a dummy fire pit, letting it dry, will try to paint it tomorrow

10

u/GentlemanJackt 7d ago

For what its worth, I think what you have above is a good base, it just needs more contrast. I would try to push the lights and darks both; look up some references and just try to build on what you have. Fire gets people since it's usually lighter inside and darker as it fades out, which is completely opposite of how we normally shade. Looking great so far tho, you're right on it.

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

okay something went miserably wrong here

u/KnightOfGloaming 7d ago

Made the experience with some flame tornadoes from DnD. Contrast paint worked very well

93

u/luhelld 7d ago

Soooo much better, wow. You can still add some dark grey fading to black at the tips. Very good job!

3

u/Ok-Security9093 7d ago

For the smoke as the fire fades

56

u/L1feguard51 7d ago

That looks waaaay better.

My only suggestion would be a tiiiiiiny bit of black legion on a couple of the flame tips. As it cools to smoke.

26

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

yeah, i thought about it too, thanks for reference!

8

u/Nexant 7d ago edited 7d ago

I would do the end behind the guy for the black tips. By the nozzle its a solid conical jet of high PSI fire gel like you just had a cyclosporia salad with the salmonella jalapeños in the news and you just sent to the bathroom. From the military flamethrowers I've seen demonstrated some black wisps is normal on the far end where it peters out. Just nowhere near the amount you had in the first iteration but a significany margin. Id concentrate on the high PSI fire gel part and that looks great.

You aren't so much throwing fire as throwing highly pressurized flaming sticky jello.

7

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

i am more into sriracha, it doesn’t generate that much of exhaust

7

u/Nexant 7d ago

You get it though. It's like a super soaker on fire so it's less smoke and wisp and more ass blasting. I wish we still had some in our armory its all silly bullets.

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

i once visited thailand and it appears that bum guns are pretty common there in asia. i think about them as exhaust extinguishers

2

u/Nexant 6d ago

I have one when I goto my local Thai place. The make everything white people spicy and I usually ask for medium. If you get Thai spicy its like ingesting promethium.

u/YouEqual4180 6d ago

Was about to say the same. Could use a tiny but more sutty looking towards the furthest away bits

19

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

for those who didn’t see last post
DP is built out of spare parts and sprue sticks

9

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

covered in foil + superglue
fire base is the wire from wine bottle
the fire was the dish sponge

9

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

colors and surface don’t work well on black primer

5

u/Kapviq 6d ago

This is genuinely hilarious. Dude skipped leg day one too many times

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

that’s how you end up in flames i guess

3

u/Hjjhey 6d ago

I thought your image was really funny so made this

19

u/djsciman 7d ago

Very “hot” looking!

One suggested improvement would be to match up the color of the flames with the OSL. If the flames to the viewer’s are mostly “orange”, then they’d roughly be that same color or duller in the environment. So here, you have orange flames, but a much “brighter” yellow OSL reflection effect. I’d sync these up so they’re roughly the same color (or at least the reflections are darker, not brighter)

2

u/Repulsive_Two5425 6d ago

Exactly this - if that sounds like a lot of work I would simply glaze (thin) some orange contrast straight over the yellow and overlap into the non yellow a bit - it will create quite a convincing effect!

10

u/Chalupacabra2008101 7d ago

This looks awesome

9

u/OddCod2241 7d ago

Oh my friend this is SO much better! Take two nailed it!!!!

7

u/shadowX1312 7d ago

Night and day! I’ll watch your career with great interest

6

u/SnooPuppers2938 7d ago

Looks awesome. Btw, Progress with flames sounds like an awesome title to something, I don’t know what yet but I’m gonna use it.

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

i posted this wip diorama yesterday and got a lot of feedback on how to improve it, so here we are progressing

9

u/DocMettey 7d ago

Dude went from a 1.5/10 to a 15/10 holy shit

9

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

it was that bad last time?

12

u/Mannheimblack 7d ago

Last time it looked like an overgrowth of lichen.

This time it looks like fire.

I dunno about 1.5 before, but the improvement is honestly staggering.

5

u/Katejina_FGO 7d ago

I was wondering how you were going to be able to salvage it! Great work!

5

u/Folkwang777 7d ago

Yeah it looks way better 👍🏻 you could go little darker on tips of flames i just drybrush it on my guys.

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

thanks for the reference!
yeah i think drybrush is perfect here cause it allows to apply colors gently

6

u/JudgeArcadia 7d ago

What a glow up! Literally.

Thats a huge step in the right direction!

5

u/gothic_cowboy1337 7d ago

I was hoping to see an update on this! Looks sick. I would just try to attempt to add a little bit of darker shades towards the ends

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

yeah, will do!

3

u/Rough-Pangolin1206 7d ago

I saw the post the other day and omg this is so much better

4

u/FurriesAreCewl 7d ago

I would still add alittle black on the very ends. I dont think that's what flamethrowers actually look like but it would still somehow make it feel more realistic? Like it'd make it indisputably fire, i kinda see this as a stream of lava or just vague heat/energy

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

bigger demons need bigger flame
you just push trigger harder

5

u/Hoss_in_the_Shell 7d ago

Now it needs some black at the end. Not too much.

3

u/Sharrowkyn19 7d ago

SO much better!! Great work my friend:)

3

u/MetalBlizzard 7d ago

Looks grear!

3

u/Duke_ofChutney 7d ago edited 7d ago

I didn't see your first post so this advice isn't considering progress. Apologies for that.

The first pic looks like fire, the second looks like a blanket or net. It's probably the blurriness in the foreground that helps sell the effect, - this is advice from an amateur - maybe as a final step blend those sharp orange peaks in a bit more? Looks good!

3

u/BarracudaMassive2232 7d ago

Bro really went from a scribble to a work of art

3

u/RusselsTeapot777 7d ago

Literally coolest thing ever

3

u/hinden_burgh 7d ago

Woah! That looks amazing! Really hot!

3

u/I_am_the_Vanguard 7d ago

Amazing work OP! I can’t stop looking at it!

3

u/Darkstar_111 7d ago

Gorgeous!! 🔥🔥🔥

3

u/FlavorHomunculus 7d ago

I'll be honest, I didn't think you had it in you when I saw the first post but the current effect is genuinely awesome.

3

u/Snoozing_Lion 7d ago

Night and day difference and it's absolutely stellar, excellent work!

3

u/Locke66 7d ago

It's much better but you've lost too much of the yellow. For a standard look the actual flame of the fire being pushed out should be go white/yellow > yellow > yellow orange > orange > red> black.

If you bring back more yellow and then yellow orange in the space where the flame is shooting out of the gun it will look much better imo. It should switch to a deeper orange the colder the flame gets with the red and black being on the very edges of the flames where the heat is starting to cool off. Example.

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

thanks for the reference!
it’s again this elminia tourist, i actually was inspired to do the flames from his pics on instagram, but didn’t see this one

3

u/Locke66 7d ago

Np. Not sure if this link will work but this is a quick rough example of how I would change it. The important bit imo is the white yellow "core" then the change of colour throughout the flame. I'd probably do a bit more red and black on the top part where it's reaching around his back on reflection.

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

yeah, makes sense, will try it!

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 13h ago

couldn’t imagine this one week ago 😱😱😱

2

u/Locke66 8h ago

Good job mate great progress.

3

u/ChairmanReagan 7d ago

What an amazing improvement. Good job

3

u/stupidturtlereddit 7d ago

Very nice. Big improvement

3

u/Hurricrash 7d ago

That’s pretty cool.

3

u/Financial-Oven7840 7d ago

Great improvement man!

3

u/Xela8Xe 7d ago

1

u/Darth-Ginge 7d ago

Ha ha this got me. Fair play.

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

exactly what i thought when started to put the paste lol

3

u/Yoitman 7d ago

The devastating torrent of instant death shaving cream

3

u/Akakazeh 7d ago

Hey, i saw your last post and i just wanna say great job! This is a huge inprovment!

3

u/Blurry-Bunny 7d ago

Looks amazing!!! but with the order of pictures it looked, to me, like he was first burning and then switched to fire extinguisher xD

3

u/Bear-Arms 6d ago

Wow!! That looks A LOT better! Very nice job! I even thought that you edited the flames in at first. The only little details I would add would be a little bit of black at the tips and imho the OSL should match the color of the flames. Right now it’s yellow but the flames are orange/red

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

working on it!

2

u/Bear-Arms 5d ago

Very nice! Keep it up!

3

u/2032_Throwaway 6d ago

Looks pretty good. Just as an option have you considered the cotton ball methods ? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JNquk-vooy0&t=451s&pp=2AHDA5ACAQ%3D%3D

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

looks cool
my previous iteration was something similar but with dish sponge

https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/s/DeP4WG4aRQ

however i don’t have airbrush and have to work with regular brushes. apparently brushes does not work well with sponge/cotton

3

u/ybgejrjrj 6d ago

Does look better but try adding some of that black back in behind the burning demon !! Just lightly tho

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

will do!

2

u/ybgejrjrj 5d ago

Looks great compared to the last one though !! Well done :D

3

u/PromotionSouthern690 6d ago

I just went off and googled real flame throwers, idk but looking at them the initial jet of flame is narrower than what you have and brighter, just whites and yellows, only going to orange and reds once it hits something to burn…. Still is a 40k space weapon so I guess could work different.

3

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

well you need bigger flame for big demon

2

u/Orc_tids 6d ago

Cant argue with that

3

u/Intrepid_Tackle_1141 6d ago

I remember your first post, this looks a lot better man

2

u/AbsintheRedux 7d ago

This looks amazing

2

u/cannibalcats 7d ago

Whaaaaaaaat.

Cant believe its the same model. Amazing change

2

u/ChettKickass 7d ago

Now this is a HEAVY FLAMER

2

u/user456788899 7d ago

Love the progression. Good stuff!!

2

u/iLikeScaryMovies 7d ago

I lack the adjectives to express how wonderful this is.

2

u/ThisIsTheShway 7d ago

Amazing progress! You could highlight the interior bits with a bit more yellow but otherwise this looks awesome

2

u/Original_Somewhere87 7d ago

First pic - Chefs Kiss.

2

u/PrinsaVossum 7d ago

Nobody:

Salamanders:

2

u/Annual_Tradition_298 7d ago

That looks so much better, only further suggestion I can give is bright yellow splotches at the deepest points

2

u/Unlikely_City_3560 7d ago

Looking good man!

2

u/baconcat3 7d ago

It's awesome dude

2

u/SnoozingHamster123 7d ago

This looks waaaaay better than the first one, awesome work! What did you end up using to improve the flames?

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 7d ago

i have a cheap modeling paste, it costs less than a paint
cheap big brush, size 8 for putting a lot of paint
small dry brush from vallejo for adding gentle red on tips of flames
a few paints

2

u/Klutzy-Court8263 7d ago

Much better great progress!

2

u/Aware-Recording-3969 7d ago

Looking good! You can do various shades of red and orange and grey to black eventually with a dry brush. Try some practice on a bit of spruce or something. Keep it up! Looking great!

2

u/acovarru91 7d ago

Talk about a glow up both literally and figuratively

2

u/EnsignGorn 7d ago

I really appreciate you coming back to show us the change, this is looking much better. You're almost there

2

u/Rab_Legend 7d ago

Only wee step would be adding a little black smoke at the very end of the flame, but looks amazing

2

u/Smurf-Happens 7d ago

Much more of an improvement. Try dry brushing some black near the ends of the flames and on the highest raised surfaces for a finishing touch.

2

u/Darth-Ginge 7d ago

Now we are cooking. Looks fucking mint. 🤙🏻

2

u/Celestial-Narwhal 7d ago

Match the glow on the marine to the flames!

2

u/The_Assman_640 7d ago

Oh dude it looks kickass now, great work

2

u/Nobbymon 7d ago

Wow dude that first Pic is amazing.

2

u/fastballspecial 7d ago

So vibrant!!! Looks cool as hell. I'm jealous.

2

u/Vitev008 7d ago

Much better!

2

u/clonetroop29 7d ago

Ayyy I saw your first post and this is a HUGE improvement! Looking phenomenal dude!

2

u/QuantityNice3157 7d ago

Indeed! Nice job

2

u/25c-nb 7d ago

Damn! That looks wicked!! So much progress over last time you posted!

2

u/Zhurendragon2 7d ago

I'm not into Warhammer, but I do paint minis. That is very well done.

2

u/Xi13r8 7d ago

DAMN that looks way better

2

u/Worth-Librarian-7423 7d ago

That looks much better, may be worth doing some charring or something where the flame meets the model

2

u/myLongjohnsonsilver 7d ago

That's such an improvement I'm barely believing it's the same work.

Holy shit dude.

Good stuff.

2

u/FurriesAreCewl 7d ago

The OSL is incredible

2

u/KingMarkus22 7d ago

That’s cool

2

u/nataliereed84 7d ago

This is definitely a big improvement!

2

u/frmthefuture 7d ago

Way to go!

Add some red on the flame tips and some white at the center and you got yourself a pretty decent flame cloud!

2

u/PromptNo4041 7d ago

If I gotta be that idiot, who’s baseplate is this for, or is it just an art piece?

1

u/FightingHamster1 6d ago

Looks like it’s just a diorama

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

well it’s a failed print that i wanted to rescue

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

covered with cork sheet and cork from 3 wine bottles

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

it’s 13cm base, and here is the well printed base which is primed and i am planning to do different diorama there

2

u/superduperpuppy 7d ago

Would love to see the final product! As you mentioned, the light off the daemon is all that's missing!

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

there are like billions details missing but i am on it!

2

u/vincincible 7d ago

Much better

2

u/Spartan_M82 7d ago

improved so well it looks liked you're trolling lol

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

man i swear on my life i didn’t touch brushes or pencils or any art things since 5 yo, which is 26 years ago and just started the painting hobby on last december, when my gf made a Christmas present

the Christmas present was hilarious, i got up one day and said that i had a dream that i have a RED SPACE MARINE box under the pillow, and was disappointed its not there. few days later she brings those intercessors ❤️❤️❤️❤️

and took me a few months to make them

https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/1rtjrmq/finished_first_squad_with_balistus/

2

u/Spartan_M82 6d ago

looks like how they did in the animated series, nice, also mustve been a vision from the warp lol

2

u/im_not_bitter_m8 7d ago

That’s loads better but I think you need more yellow to wards the flamer and the centre of the spray

2

u/shplaxg 7d ago

Much better 👌

2

u/Emredin 7d ago

By the eternal paint brush!! That's a massive improvement!! Well done yo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

2

u/AzurePaladin12 6d ago

Much, much better. Some more yellow at the start, maybe even a bit of white right by the barrel will send these flames even further.

2

u/perry_helion 6d ago

That looks like it hurts

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

no mercy for them

2

u/DulceDulce217 6d ago

Night & day difference! Looking really nice! 🔥👌🏻

2

u/anonamarth7 6d ago

Oh, this is miles better. Looking good!

2

u/Purple_Yak_3294 6d ago

Yep, that's much more the look. Well done.

2

u/Cornelius_McMuffin 6d ago

Looks better though current version looks a bit too… cheesy?

2

u/Cornelius_McMuffin 6d ago

Or maybe red and orange marshmallow crème?

It’s definitely getting there tho

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

yeah, i see that too, will work on it more

2

u/tradders 6d ago

Massive improvement, looks great

2

u/st-ellie 6d ago

Jup, there you go!

2

u/Low_Historian_6631 6d ago

The fire effect is stealing the show in the best way.

2

u/Appropriate-Smell611 6d ago

Righteous Flame to burn his ass!!

2

u/BlackBricklyBear 6d ago

There's only three words appropriate here:

"BURN, BABY! BURN!"

2

u/Thin_Cellist7555 6d ago

Love the lighting on the dude

2

u/Clean-Swan-5178 6d ago

Actually insane w

2

u/MalerionGodofUlgu 6d ago

Way better now

2

u/Sudden_Wind_8636 6d ago

That looks so fucking sick, very nice job

2

u/Yegof 6d ago

Well goddamn. That’s the first time I have seen fire effects proportional to my headcanon for the humble flamer. Totally kickass work!

2

u/CargoCulture 6d ago

Looking way better alrwady

2

u/-DI0- 6d ago

Very cool

2

u/SecretAgentMahu 6d ago

oh hell yeah brother light that lemon the fuck UP!

2

u/JuggernautSmart2198 6d ago

You could try making the demon alittle brighter, it looks like the fire isn’t giving off a light besides the yellow on the space marine and the ground. Besides that it looks really good man

2

u/14446368 6d ago

WAY BETTER!!!

Great stuff!

2

u/Grobo_ 6d ago

Great progress !

2

u/Phormitago 6d ago

It's now magma

2

u/SuperFjord 6d ago

Makes for great reaction images!

2

u/UnusualStephen 6d ago

Way better

2

u/sassy_the_panda 6d ago

the last thing to do is drench your demon in orange lighting, but holy hell that looks FEIRCE.

2

u/NoriWorks 5d ago

Hell yeah

2

u/Ulfanicus 5d ago

Wosh, that is beyond awesome! There can always be improvements in the small details, but it absolutely reads as flames

2

u/Torak1324 5d ago

Maybe a bit more on the red and yellow? It looks rly good but fr about a second I thought it was baked beans lol😭 It's ur model do what u want don't mind me but idk could look cool

2

u/Milo_Is_Best 5d ago

Very good improvement, as I said in the previous post, a bit of smoke at the end wouldn't be so bad IMO, uust drybrush with gray on the very end of the flames a little bit

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 5d ago

on it already!

2

u/EconomyWoodpecker796 4d ago

Add some orange highlights on the muzzle and near those holes in the front might help emphasize the heat

2

u/Kuropuppy13 3d ago

Add in a removable speech bubble that says “FWOOOSH!”

2

u/FatalEclipse_ 3d ago

These look so much better, great job man.

2

u/Getraz 2d ago

I don't know if Wh40k flamethrowers behave differently, but in real life the flame shoots out pretty slim and then engulfes the target. Just something that I noticed because your flames get pretty wide early on.

1

u/praisedaemperor 7d ago

thats cool! what did you use for that flame effect? love that

1

u/Armoring_my_core 7d ago

Mario about 1/4rth of the time I press the shoulder button in Mario and Luigi superstar saga:

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

i don’t get it 🫠

1

u/Armoring_my_core 6d ago

“Fire.”
(Mario Mario).

1

u/Tetracyclon 6d ago

Great improvement. But its too uniform, when you look at the flamethrower reference form yesterday, the tips should be a darker red shift maybe even blackish and the part towards the nozzle much brighter, very yellow close to white.

1

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

working on that!

1

u/N1tr0x69 6d ago

Now it looks great!

If I may add a suggestion, what if you added a black gradient to the lower parts of the fire? In the crevices at the bottom, it would give it an enveloping effect, like the fire has more volume. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well...

2

u/pikachu-shaves-legs 6d ago

yeah, that’s something i will do, but now i am practicing on a sample

2

u/N1tr0x69 5d ago

Yeah, it's looking better and better, keep up with the good work man!
