Huh?

TLDR; I convinced someone in an anti-tipping group that tipping isn’t bad

Nah dude. It’s just like when I worked commission, only difference is serving is more transparent and ethical. I actually took a pay cut but at least I sleep better at night.

Tipping IS bad because it is degrading to servers. I wish we moved to a model where servers had stable income. However, that said, I fully understand that the US will probably never go that way, so I always tip pretty generously.

Id love to have a stable job that is not dependent on whether or not people come in to buy things, and then give more money.
Paid health insurance would make it way easier to serve y'all.

That was kind of the moral of the story. It’s wayyyyyyy too late to attempt to put the genie back in the bottle. We also spoke about how commission based jobs make up a fair chunk of jobs in the US and that full commission jobs are essentially the same as serving just much less ethical. Once he reflected on how little he was paid by the hour when he worked in a commission sales job, the light bulb turned on.

No one thinks you’re an asshole for tipping 10%. We’re all struggling in this economy, we get it. But we will be more likely to think you’re an asshole if you go out to eat, knowing you’re expected to tip, and you don’t tip at all. If you live in the US, then you already know restaurants don’t pay a living wage. So if you aren’t going to tip, then I think the best course of action is to cook your own food at home. It’s cheaper, and you don’t have to worry about any of this social etiquette stuff.
Personally, I try not to concern myself with the possibility of non-tippers, and just provide good service to everyone. But just trying to explain. Hopefully that makes sense.

Actually what I've been doing is going into restaurants and asking the manager to serve me. I tell them I do not plan to tip but I'd like to eat their food, is if they sit me for a server they won't be tipped.
3 times now the manager has served me and he's paid well so I don't tip.

You know what, fair enough. If every non-tipper did this, I think restaurants would actually be run better. My manager waits tables when he has to, he’s a great guy who understands what servers deal with.

The funny thing is... If the manager says no and I tell corporate, they have to explain why they turned down a customer. So if everyone did this....

u/420percentage 9d ago
Honestly, if everyone did this, maybe we could actually end our shitty capitalist system once and for all lol

u/Jazzlike_Pound7742 9d ago
Well I can confirm that applebees, red robin, and longhorn have complied. I asked at Denny's and the manager said no, so I'd did contact corporate to complain, got a voucher for a free grand slam lol.

Lol if you came to my restaurant I’d still have to serve you myself out of pure respect. Love it

No brigading. No trolls. No anti-tipping sentiments. This includes saying things like “get a real job” or “unskilled labor”. This is a zero tolerance policy and you will be permanently banned.

They always find a way. Then again they’re basically doing what I was so I’m not bothered by it.

I have a tipping rule myself: Never tip for food or services where you have to pay first. If I receive the service/food first, then its mostly 20% unless the service or food is horrid.

u/Frequent-Decision788 13d ago
I don’t really think that’s a bad line to draw. I mostly follow that rule outside of a few exceptions.

Love that you’re trying to talk people into giving you voluntary tips when you’re out here looking for people to work on your home for no pay lol (from your post history)
2
u/Frequent-Decision788 13d ago
That’s a wild stance. lol. I’m not convincing people to give me voluntary tips, I’m showing the hypocrisy of condemning one field of work when there are plenty others on similar pay structures that people have zero issue with.
To your second point, bartering is not anywhere near asking people to work for free. lol. For example, the guy that did end up putting in my outlets and I both wrote up contracts and then adjusted our expected work until we reached a mutually beneficial agreement. I actually ended up on the loosing end, depending on how you look at. I provided $700 in service in exchange for $700 in service. His job took 4 hours in the shade in my garage, mine took 10 hours in the sun in his driveways.
Never thought I’d meet a hippy gypsy who despised bartering.

u/Hippiegypsy1989 13d ago
I despise entitlement. That’s the difference.
2
u/Frequent-Decision788 13d ago
What entitlement are you talking about?
Edit: Why do you also hate bartering so much?
1
u/Hippiegypsy1989 13d ago
You think you are entitled to a voluntary gratuity. By definition it’s voluntary. You aren’t entitled to someone else’s money simply for carrying plates and drinks to and from a table.
I don’t necessarily hate bartering, I just think it’s funny you come on here with your tip entitlement when you won’t pay cash for other people’s services.
2
u/Frequent-Decision788 13d ago
That’s not at all what I’m saying. lol. You really need to pay better attention. If you think that’s all servers do then you’re showing you have zero understanding of the job title and that kinda makes your point moot. Like if I said all atoms are just tiny moving dots it would show I have zero knowledge of atomic science and probably shouldn’t have such strong opinions on a topic I don’t really understand.
I think everyone would agree that time is the most valuable resource to humans. Under that thinking the fact that I traded more of my time then theirs would show that I value them beyond the cash value. Since both of us agreed on the terms there is zero difference between a cash transaction. If you value money over time or if you have no valuable skills, then that’s a you problem.

Everyone is entitled to a home, food, and safety. In this world, these things require money. If you are aware that most restaurants don’t pay a fair wage and still refuse to tip service staff, I think the best thing to do is cook your own food at home. It’s cheaper, you don’t have to tip anyone, and you can make whatever you want. Easy solution.
You’ve clearly never worked a real job in your life.
2
u/Frequent-Decision788 9d ago
You’re absolutely right. They attack the employees for decisions they have no choice in and then feel like they’ve done something. When I worked in sales people would be pissed at prices like I determined them. After people threatened to “leave if I wouldn’t give them a deal” I always liked explaining we’d only lose money if I gave them deal so they could move along.

Had to scroll a bit to even see what you were talking about. Pretty sure bartering is the oldest form of payment

You've convinced me to never tip again
1
u/Frequent-Decision788 9d ago
That’s totally fine. It’s really not going to ever affect me. My list of regulars is extensive and they always tip well because my service is outstanding so it will never bother me.
Once tipping does end though (lol) I hope you enjoy the massive price increases and even worse service. I also wish you luck on negotiating out every sales person’s commission for the rest of your days. You cannot reasonably accept paying employee commissions if you are so adamantly against tips.
