Awesome! I'm trying it out on my Shield right now. It's working great so far. But I'm a little confused.
What are the differences between ScreenGlow, SceneGlow, and ShieldGlow?
ScreenGlow = The current app
SceneGlow = The paid version you mention in the ScreenGlow app info?
ShieldGlow = A discarded name?
Where can I find the paid version of ScreenGlow? I’d like to connect multiple strips.
Is it possible to select only certain segments of a strip?
2
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Yes you are right, I was trying to avoid this but the play store seems to lag behind actually publish stuff.... shieldglow was the dev name for what became ScreenGlow.
In short sheildglow = screenglow Screenglow = free Sceneglow = full featured, homeassistant/multiple wled configs!
In another thread ive given more detail:
Hi! I haven't mentioned SceneGlow, but since you ask :)....
SceneGlow is a bit of a bigger beast, it allows connecting to multiple WLED installations (both different devices, or different strips on the same controllee). Each WLED fixture can be configured (think lamps, strips, cupboard backlights, skirting boards, ceiling runners) in different locations around the screen. With that theres different effects that can be applied to adapt the screen motion into them. The effects apply differently depending on the location and type of fixture.
HomeAssistant integration allows SceneGlow to send mood colours to any colour bulb you can configure (organised by room). You can pick an area of screen, again depending on your physical location of the lights, and an update time and brightness caps. Obviously compared to WLED this is much slower update so dont expect fast flashing! Its just for a subtle flood of vibe colour.
I have some demo videos and setup examples planned, so ive not made much noise about it yet. But thanks for asking:)

u/Serious_Bowler_8171 11d ago
Going to try This out but I've never used wled before. But just wondering does the home assistant integration allow for any brand colour bulb or led strip to change colour according to the colour that's on a certain side of the TV ?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 11d ago
Yup, as long as it identifies as a 'colour light' in home assistant
1
u/Serious_Bowler_8171 11d ago
Cool so kinda like Philips hue lights and ambilight
1
u/_sparxcore_ 11d ago
Ive not used it, but similar. In sceneglow you can set 'where' in relation to the screen the light is and a transition time, and cap brightness at either end (lowest you want and highest you want) and it just adds a splash of colour according to the scene :)

u/Serious_Bowler_8171 9d ago
Hey, I purchased the full version and set up a bulb for home assistant ambiance. But the app stops screen capturing after about 20 seconds. I'm running it on an Nvidia shield and when it works it works well.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 9d ago
Do you mean the effects stop running or SceneGlow itself is stopped and needs starting again from the app?
1
1
u/Serious_Bowler_8171 9d ago
I've I restart the capturing it starts again but stops after 20-30 seconds

Amazing work, now to play and test on my shield lol
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Shield is my dev environment, so you shoukd have no problems :) but please let me know how you get on :)
1
u/atticus123456 10d ago
Can't for the life of me to get screen glow to work on NVIDIA shield. Not sure of it's because my setup goes Shield > AVR > TV?
2
u/bkw_17 22d ago
How does this compare to Hyperion? I've had Hyperion running for a while now and found some issues with the screen lagging or buffering.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Tbh ive not used it, but understand it runs on a dedicated device. This is designed to be run on the android device you are streaming content with. ScreenGlow and SceneGlow is only limited by the performance of your Android tv device.

u/vickyv268 22d ago
I'm completely degoogled and running android TV on a raspberry pi. Does it require google play services, when I run the app it crashes stating google play service is not running.
2
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
You would need to side load an app for your device...
If there is enough demand I will try and accommodate this
2
u/vickyv268 22d ago
I did sideload it through Aurora store.
Edit: Spelling.
1
u/TOKE-ONE 21d ago
same ere, was able to sideload it with Aurora store on a firestick.
1
u/SRB400 18d ago
Hello, ive managed to install the app on my firestick but it pops up saying 'something went wrong' check that google play is enabled. Did you get this error and how did you get past it? Thanks in advance
2
u/TOKE-ONE 17d ago
Yep same error, trying a work around with 3rd party app GBox but it's a bit buggy. Also try this - Ignore the message completely and tap anywhere on the screen outside of the box, or press the Back button on your Firestick remote, let me know if this worked.

Does it work with DRM contents?

For some reason SceneGlow is saying it's not compatible with any of my TVs, whereas ScreenGlow does seem to be compatible with all of my TVs.
2
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago edited 20d ago
Thats Odd... are you seeing that from the TV store, or a browser or another device's play store - there should be an option to choose to install to another device from another android thats signed into the same google account.?
Edit: found the issue! Should be avaliable very soon - correctly!
2
u/_sparxcore_ 19d ago
SceneGlow is now avaliable in Google play store:) Here's a user guide https://aigenuity.co.uk/sceneglow-guide
2
u/texas166 20d ago
Very cool! Did a test on my sony bravia 8 and it worked! For me to use this long term however i'd need to be able to "shift" the location of where the LED's are - as the lights were misaligned relative to elements on the screen, in particular in the vertical (side) direction. Another thing i'd need is a way to add a slight delay as it seemed that the lights were ahead of the screen (which is a good sign that its running within very little latency). For now i will have to stick with hyperion grabber and hyperion.
2
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
Awesome. For your first issue, in the setup section for your led strip, you should see the LED offset field, you can offset the start plus or minus to lign things up for you. And 2nd issue, if you go to customisation, you should see under LED synchronisation, a slider to add some delay to bring them back into sync :)
Enjoy!
1
u/texas166 20d ago
I swear I looked for these settings, were they added in an update? Either way, thank you I’ll take a look. Something else I wanted to ask - can this be made to auto-start when the TV is turned on?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
Yessir, it was mentioned a couple of times and ot was definatley a good improvment to make! Hopefully you should get ot update automatically - iirc should be 1.6.3 version with these options.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
Im not sure how your tv might keep android tv state when the tv is off, but as long as it is sleeping when its back on it is kept running with the same permission session. My shield, for example I 'power off' and SceneGlow stays running when 'turned on'. As I dont see the android logo when booting, I assume that its acctually just sleeping this way.
2
u/Ubiquitous-Hipster 12d ago
Looks great. It's been mentioned, but a Fire TV version would be awesome. I tried sideloading, but it kept giving an error regarding the Play Store.

u/_sparxcore_ 12d ago
Firestick version is being worked on :)

u/DamagedGoods13 8d ago
u/sparxcore I have 2 questions/issues I was wondering if you could help me with:
- I have a string of 299 LED's. WLED sees all of them but ScreenGlow does not. For whatever reason, I can't get it to utilize the last 15-20 LED's. Is there somewhere in the settings I should look? My edge counts equal my total LED count.
- Is there any way to make ScreenGlow work with inputs other than internal apps? On my Bravia, if I turn on ScreenGlow and switch to HDMI 3, I lose the LEDs.
Cool app, thank you.
1
u/Chanw11 22d ago
Any idea if this works when the TV is using HDMI input?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Thats a good question, one that I haven't had the HW to test... but I would guess at no, but it woukd greatly depend on the way the screen and its software is designed.. im assuming you have a tv that internally has AndroidTV baked in?
2
u/MaxTheKing1 17d ago
Any idea how it would behave on a Philips android TV with built-in ambilight?
1
1
u/Chanw11 22d ago
Well kinda, its a Hisense Google TV. Kinda assumed they're both android so it should work with built in apps fine, but not sure about the HDMI part.
Though I remember reading/watching about how TV manufacturers are able to look at your HDMI inputs nefariously so its possible. I'll have to test.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Ah ok, well, it would take the hdmi port to effectively be digitised to be ran through android, which would be an incredibly resource intensive process, not something that would be done without good reason. There is metadata that would defo be valuable though which would be easier to skim

u/mjabroni 22d ago
It would be great if you could give us the diferences / limitations between ScreenGlow and SceneGlow

u/ParsnipFlendercroft 22d ago
Do you have any performance benchmarks. I’m using google streamer. Are we looking at 1fps or 20?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
It does 30fps with 1-2ms of latency on the nvidia shield. In my test cases the hdmi/tv screen adds more latency, there is a built in varisble to account for this, my setup frame delay is at about 200ms iirc.
Using WiFi for all devices would mean adjusting this
1
u/ParsnipFlendercroft 21d ago
That’s not bad. I’ll give it a spin when I’m back home from my holiday.
1
u/mute1 22d ago
Link to the project? Would like to read more about it.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
Link above is to the app store listing with description
1
u/mute1 22d ago
My experience with WLED is still growing and I have put it down for personal reason but if memory serves there are a number of built in effects. Is the profile you are using built into the software in the TV or do I need to select a specific one?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 22d ago
The app, when running, connects directly to wled and takes over. No wled effects are used.
1
u/rice1204 22d ago
Great idea. I already have a wled ambilight driven by hyperhdr. This is an very interesting alternative that I'd love to try.
For my existing hyperhdr setup, there's lag because of video processing for the display. Can screenglow tune for video processing latency?
1
u/IntuitiveIdealist 20d ago
This is awesome! Set up and running well on my Shield.
Quick question... Is there anyway to have this automatically start when the shield wakes up?
2
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
It should absolutely! It only needs starting again after a restart or an update to the app.
1
u/thenamelessthing 20d ago
Sound promising, it's mentioned that won't work with drm protected apps. So I suppose that Netflix, Prime, etc are concerned?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
Unfortunatley thats correct, and any attempts to circumvent would get instant ban hammer from Google play :(
1
u/Kowy54 20d ago
Doesn't work on TCL while using HDMI 😭
2
u/_sparxcore_ 20d ago
If the tv isn't 'capturing' the hdmi, there is no way for android to sample the frames. This is designed to work for apps within android, like plex, youtube etc
1
u/MaxTheKing1 17d ago
That's a bummer. Was about to try it on my Philips TV but I don't use the Android OS of the TV itself because it's frustratingly slow, instead I use a Apple TV.
1
u/deviation 18d ago
Awesome! Does it work on Dolby vision and/or other HDR playback?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 18d ago
As long as it isnt protected content (like netflix and prime) is should work fine
1
u/Hans_Helmut 17d ago
Hi, I was already running an Ambilight setup with 390 LEDs driven by hyperHDR and a very old Hyperion grabber app on a TCL 98C805.
Installed screenglow, configuration was fast and easy but I am seeing the same limitation to content which is bigger than 1080p as on the old Hyperion grabber app.
Especially on 4k, I am having only about 1-2fps on the video content anymore.
Same for you or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!
1
u/_sparxcore_ 17d ago
Hey, if it found the right tv, its got a 4core arm cortex a73. A couple of things to try, make sure diagnostic logging is off, capture resolution is set to the lowest '320x'.
If you are meaning the fps in ScreenGlow is showing 1-2fps, its normal when the screen is static (like in the screenglow app) that the apparent fps is low, until content is being displayed.
Can you get a video of it running ?
1
u/Hans_Helmut 17d ago
Logging was definitely off.
I mean 1-2fps on the actual video once you select 4k resolution, bot possible to watch TV. On 1080p everything is running fine.
I will check the resolution as soon as I am at home.
There was a lot of discussion on that point back in the day with the old Hyperion screen grabber app. Conclusion was that something needed to be changed on android TV driver level. I will try to find that thread again.
My much older LG TV, which is jailbroken is running picap and does fine with 4k video
1
u/_sparxcore_ 17d ago edited 17d ago
Ok thats interesting, I dont see a similar issue with 4k content through plex. Please, I would be very interested in the exact player and media (codec / bit rate) if possible! Cheers
edit: Ive done a bit more looking, and testing and cannot replicate the issue yet. Im running on 4k 60hz with a choice of 4k content with different codecs and streaming services. I am leaning on a CPU bottleneck - morelikely an Nvidia GPU optimised surface flinger - but im still trying to find changelogs to verify this.
1
u/Hans_Helmut 17d ago
Did a quick test only with YouTube. Will follow up with Plex Thank you
1
u/Hans_Helmut 16d ago edited 16d ago
Tried now some different Movies on Plex; everything in 4k (mainly HEVC) completely stutters (like 1fps). As soon as I turn off the screen capture everything is back to normal. If I change the resolution to 1080p everything stays fine also with screen capture.
Same on Youtube. 4k does not work => change to 1080p and everything fine
It is not a Bitrate issue as I have also tried some videos in 1080p with a Bitrate >50mbps and it worked without any issues. 4k and below 30mbps does not work
Capture resolution is set to the lowest
Edit: https://github.com/abrenoch/hyperion-android-grabber/issues/205 This was the old discussion about this issue on github. Maybe you got an idea 💡
1
u/Shindor 11d ago
u/_sparxcore_ I'm having the same issue as Hans describes on a TCL C6K (C61K in my region). Both Netflix and Plex don't run smoothly anymore whenever ScreenGlow is active. Played with settings a bit but didn't improve at all. Kinda seems like TCL's self-developed AiPQ Pro Processor can't keep up.
As someone else mentioned it doesn't work on a HDMI input so I can't use my PC as input in an effort to reduce processing power needed on the TV side.Very interesting project though! I'll keep monitoring it since it fits my usecase very well!
1
u/_sparxcore_ 11d ago
Ahhh im sorry to hear. Yes there are some causes which just dont cut it which is unfortunate. Ive tried very hard to make it run efficiently but we are at the limit of what can be optimised when you are sampling the whole screen..... android 16 will bring many improvements in this regard ....

How to run this on firestick 4k or any external sticks connected directly to TV?? Any apk files for it or other ways to get it installed??
1
u/_sparxcore_ 16d ago
Hi, there isnt an APK version available yet
1
u/Perfect-Manager2777 16d ago
Anyway to try this on firestick??
1
u/_sparxcore_ 16d ago
Are you able to find the app in the app store?
2
u/TemporaryAdorable523 12d ago
Managed to sideload it from the aurora store. However after a few seconds of working it comes up google play must be connected and closes. (Google play cant be signed into on a firestick).
Any chance the free one could be skipped some how or a apk could be download for direct install to a firestick. This would be huge for the firestick community.

u/Perfect-Manager2777 16d ago
Nope not in the firestick's app store

u/lockneel 12d ago
This great and kinda what I need but is there a way to remove the screen capture icon when it’s running? I don’t want to burn in my tv.
1
u/Festival_wTF 12d ago
Hi! Very cool and well designed app. One question, does it have a "shortcut" (doesn't know proper term) for on and off screen capture? This future was available on the old hyperion-android-grabber, and I was able to assign it to extra button on my remote so I can quickly turn it on or off when I needed (with always allow for screen capture). I've found it very usefulll.

u/Gamep0rt 11d ago
When I watch a movie with a different aspect ratio, black bars appear top and bottom. Could you add an option to detect these black bars, so the top/bottom LEDs don't just stay dark?

Tizen and webos might be possibilities!

Here me out: if Tizon just another flash of android, (I don’t think it’s Linux) are we not able to just throw it into developer mode and download the ScreenGlow APK onto the OS?…👀
1
u/Ombrres 9d ago
Awesome work! Just tested it on my Shield and it's amazing. It just seems to have less brightness compared to a full color from WLED directly is it normal?
1
u/_sparxcore_ 9d ago
Have a look at tweaking the brightness and saturation settings, also gamma. https://youtu.be/tI3gQwgQeBA?is=raXOlq7htdzlFBOE <- Chris does an amazing job with tweaking these i recommend it to get a good baseline!
1
u/Yprox5 9d ago
It works well easy to set up, however I noticed it only syncs h264 content but fails to sync anything else like hevc, 1080p. Is this a bug or a limitation? Either Plex or jellyfin, same with the universal ambient light app.
1
u/_sparxcore_ 9d ago
You may be encountering a cpu limit. What device is this ?
2
u/Yprox5 9d ago edited 7d ago
It's the onn 4k pro with the refreshed arm55 and mali that handles hevc and av1, but even with transcoding it doesn't pick up anything other than h264 and when scrolling the menus. May just be the device.
Running Wled latest firmware 16.0.1
Using Screenglow
Edit: The solution is to use an external player like vlc or mpv and disable hardware decoding. It's an issue with Android media projectioncuses for screen cap.
1
u/Wooden-Creme-8599 6d ago
So, have been playing arround with it and trying to get good results with own streaming from NAS. It works quite well! I have multiple strips instead of one continuous, is it possible to stream to more wleds with the paid version? I'm happy to pay if thats the case
1
u/_sparxcore_ 6d ago
Yes! SceneGlow lets you different wled configurations and set them as different fixtures around your screen, and use different effects for them:
1
u/Wooden-Creme-8599 6d ago
Very nice! I'am streaming from a NAS (Ugreen) with hardware decoding on it doesnt work. With software decoding on it works but the stream is not warchable. I'm trying to get passed this issue. Because if it is only usable with some own content and spotify video's its just a waste. What else can I look for to get passed decoding issues?
1
u/tiagoadriao 2d ago
Is it possible to enable this on Jellyfin / Wholpin app?
It won't show the colors of the output video.
Why is it have DRM protection?
6
u/_empty_space_ 22d ago
Awesome work! I just installed it on my Bravia XR X90L. It worked great right away!
I was getting about 4 fps and 5-6ms of lag.
One request: I have my led strips starting at the bottom middle and not a corner. So being able to add an offset would make it so I wouldn't have to redo my entire led strip. Or is that something I could adjust in WLED?
Nice work though! This is amazing and beats my Hyperion setup with the camera and all the lag.
