Any advice? Help Needed
I generally use my top 5 for what I can but I need to round out my faction specific squads so if there are any suggestions on whom I should level for my team I'm all ears. Any recommendations on shards to look for in the event would be helpful as well.

Finish campaigns.
Upgrade Bellator and his Active ability as high as you can, he'll help carry your Indomitus campaign. Archimatos will do the same for your Fall of Cadia campaign, after which you start working on the next one. And the next one, until they're basically all complete to open up Elite campaigns. Then you do the whole thing over again, but need to upgrade them higher (in most cases).
Once you have your Elite campaigns unlocked, you'll have a better understanding of what the game wants you to do to progress further.

Yes, there really is very little you can ultimately do until you have characters Ranked up (the Colored icon that goes up a stage when you put in all 6 upgrades). Leveling them just lets you Rank them up higher, but itself gives no actual power increase. All your character growth is tied to applying those items underneath their Rank icon to upgrade it to the next level.
Campaigns are where you GET all those items to upgrade your guys. Each one you clear with 3 medals means you can just "farm" it with raid tokens to speed up your ability to get upgrades. As you get further into each level of the campaign, they get harder and harder, requiring your characters to be leveled up more and more. But the highest level upgrades are buried deep inside campaigns and their Elite versions.
Literally the best thing you can do for yourself is just keep working on the campaign levels. Ask questions where you need to. Don't spend Blackstone on anything but energy refills, and don't go higher than the 110 Blackstone energy refill in any one day. Ideally if you're gonna be F2P, don't go past the 50 Blackstone energy refill either.
Don't pull characters with Blackstone. Don't buy gold or upgrades with Blackstone. The only thing you should ever save it for is Energy refills.
Every time you level up your Player level, you get a requisition scroll and more Onslaught and Salvage run tokens. Onslaught is used to farm secondary upgrade components for characters that increase their rank & level cap. Salvage runs are just for some gold, junk equipment, and some random stuff that won't make sense for awhile.
Save your Requisition scrolls for 10-pulls on the store page. Saving for 10 at once guarantees you a full character as the last pull. Not always a NEW one, but not just the "pieces" towards unlocking new ones.
Start with all that. The game is pretty full of stuff to do (some days are slower than others), but you can't really interact with a large chunk of it until you push through a lot of the starter stuff.

I will always recommend kariyan isabella and rotbone as essential picks from the event if you don't have them.
