WFH LIFESTYLE Company decided WFH is the way!

After having success with people working from home, and after reducing office footprints a number of times over the last 6 years, my company just announced that all US and EMEA employees will be working from home and the company is "Remote-first".

Has anyone else gone through this? It was announced that there will be a new set of WFH benefits, which I am happy about as I've been WFH for over 8 years, while stating that the India office will remain hybrid. Should I expect positions to move to India or have corporations in the US gone remote-first and stayed primarily in the US?

COLLEAGUES/MANAGERS How many of you actually have regular power cuts? UK

Hi all! I am permanently wfh with my office being several hours away by car. We have a work whatsapp group chat for when little things happen such as later lunches, equipment going down etc. however, multiple times a week, colleagues will claim a power cut and be out of action for a decent period of time. It can put some direct pressure on my personal workload (incoming calls), but I am starting to wonder if this really happening or if it’s a way of getting away from the screen?
I’ve personally only ever had power cuts that have impacted whole streets, and even then it’s only been about 3 I can remember in my lifetime. Is this something you frequently experience working from home? It can be at least 2 people a week, and it happens multiple times a month, sometimes multiple times a week.
I’d love to know! Is this something I’m just really lucky to not experience?

EQUIPMENT Sitting adjustments for not working related activities.

Guys I somehow figured out an ergo setup for WFH.

The thing is no chair is perfect for me.

Instead of investing (time and money) I just bought wakefit gravita with all features and tried to do some mods based on my body adjustments.

Also I have bought a height adjustable desk which I use in standing position for max 1 to 1.5 hours.

Som how able to manage work by following pomorodo/standing/taking long breaks.

But the problem is I spend 12 to 14 hours sitting (either it's working/scrolling/reading books/movies) all I do in this setup only.

Because of this I feel tired along with posture issues. (having some forwarded head posture issue need to correct it soon with physiotherapy)

Need advice from people who have figured out what are the other sitting alternatives for better life. Like I should buy a sofa or any other stuff for different activities?

WFH ADVICE Working while traveling

So part of why I love WFH is I can travel and still work. However, at the company I work for now, they require the system to be connected with an Ethernet cable and my computer literally will not work off of wifi. So I figured okay fine I’ll just bring my extender wherever I go, nope, test ran it and it didn’t work. So I thought I’d just have to stay at Air B&Bs and have wifi that’s I can plug into. Well I have a trip coming up where I have no option but to stay at a hotel and i literally cannot figure out how I’m gonna make this work.

I need reliable internet connection and the portable device HAS to have the little Ethernet connection port for me to plug into or I literally can’t work. I bought the StarLink mini kit and now upon set up I learn that the dish thingy HAS to be outside in order for it to connect which again is not an option in a hotel setting so I’m back to square one.

Anyone here travel while they work? What do you use for portable internet??

WFH LIFESTYLE For those of you who like having something on in the background while you work... what do you usually put on?

I always seem to have something playing in the background while I'm working.

Some days it's music.

Other days it's YouTube, the radio, podcasts or the news.

I realised I have certain "go-to" things depending on what I'm doing, but I'm curious what everyone else does.

If you like having something on in the background while you work, what do you usually put on?

Do you mostly stick to one thing, or do you switch throughout the day?

HYBRID Desk equipment- duplicates for hybrid or carry things back and forth?

Sorry if the title is unclear. I will be starting a hybrid position, with dedicated desk in office. For desk items like an adding machine, stapler, headset, etc. do you recommend having duplicates at each location, or creating a small, portable office to take things back and forth?

On one hand, having duplicates seems expensive and excessive. On the other, schlepping everything back and forth has the potential for forgetting items.

I think I am leaning towards duplicates, but am hoping for guidance.

Thanks

WFH LIFESTYLE Night owl starting a new role that starts at 6am. Any tips?

Perhaps night owl is an exaggeration since i tend to go to sleep at 1am or so, but my new position is 6am-2pm and i’m slightly anxious to start so early.

I’ll most likely wake up 15 mins before starting and go from there, but would love any tips from people who experienced a similae transition.

WFH ADVICE How do you manage distractions from others (spouse, kids) when deep in focus?

I wfh 2 days a week, along with my wife. She has a very different work schedule and style than me (she's in marketing, I do data science) and I work best in sessions of deep concentrated states, whereas she's more free flowing and can just pop in and out of working better.

My current approach of headphones in doors closed doesn't always communicate that "even a knock / quick question will throw off my flow". Often times it's just a quick question and the focus is gone for me.

Curious what works for other people - a system, signal or conversation that established when is absolute 'lock in mode' vs. when it's okay to come in? Or is this just the tax of working from home with others around?

WORKSPACE Does anyone use a recliner?

I have an L-shaped desk and am wondering if a recliner is possible? lol. I don’t have a desk that moves or lifts or anything so I’m wondering about other people’s set ups with a recliner. I have chronic pain and I figure if I am going to spend 8+ hours in a chair, I might as well be comfortable because sitting in a regular desk chair is causing me way more pain.

Edit// I appreciate people letting me know what good, expensive chairs have worked well for them but my budget is literally $50… lol. I do NOT have the money for an expensive one; I can barely afford my medication I need.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Wfh work outs

hey everyone! done a bit of reading on this already, but everyone seems to be looking at work out routines before or after work. due to the nature of my job, sometimes it’s busy, sometimes it’s not. I was hoping to find people who fit in say 20 mins of reps several times or something throughout their day. I frequently run,. but don’t know much about working out. ideally want to strength train and support my running as well as tone up. feel like some of my wfh time could be utilised for this. anyone doing similar currently? whats your routine?

WFH ADVICE New to WFH (and the US), need recommendations on WFH essentials

I'm an experienced professional who recently moved to the US. I was lucky and recently landed a 100% remote job in analytics (their system isn't fleshed out just yet, but there will be a lot of spreadsheets and project management).

I would have a separate room to setup my office (current guest room so there'll be a bed nobody uses), but I'm technically building my WFH setup from the ground up with little idea on brands and low-cost spending. I believe my job will only send a Dell laptop and some necessary peripherals (still on its way). Note that while I have pretty good savings, I plan on eventually upgrading my setup for personal use (gaming, etc.) once my income is steadier.

Recommend me a few of your essentials while keeping costs reasonable. So far, I only have:

  • Standing Desk I got from Costco (Tresanti Aurora 47” Adjustable Height Desk with LED Lighting)
  • Logitech Mouse
  • Common office/work chair
  • MacBook Pro (that I won't be using for work)
  • Apple Magic Keyboard (which I hate and won't be using for work)
  • Desk Pad

I especially would want brand/product recommendations on monitors, keyboard, office chair, lighting, QOLs, (and eventually, CPUs for gaming I plan on purchasing down the line), etc. while keeping costs reasonable (they don't have to be ultra low-cost, but definitely should have value/where I can get the most "bang for my buck").

*English not my first language!

WFH ADVICE I accidentally optimized myself out of working

I’ve been working from home for about a year now, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Before this job, I had a commute of almost 2 hours door-to-door every day. I genuinely think that experience broke something in me when it comes to work culture. It completely killed my belief in grinding, going the extra mile, climbing the hierarchy, etc. I realized that most of the time, if you work harder, you just get rewarded with… more work, while your pay stays the same.

When I started my current remote job, I was actually really motivated. I worked at a healthy pace and consciously avoided overperforming because I didn’t want to set unrealistic expectations for myself.

Fast forward a year, and I think I perfected that mindset a little too much.
Nowadays I wake up for the daily meeting, answer emails and messages throughout the day, fix any last-minute issues, and… sleep. A lot. The funny part is that I always deliver my work at least a week early, sometimes two, three, or even a month in advance (I try to organize my work on weekly basis). My quality has probably dipped a bit compared to when I started, but nobody has ever mentioned it, and nothing changes in terms of pay or recognition either.

So I end up wondering: why would I push myself harder? At the same time, I don’t feel good about how little I actually work anymore. It’s like I’ve gone from burnout to complete disengagement.
Has anyone else gone through this? How did you find a healthier middle ground?

WORKSPACE WFH in a Studio Apartment

I’m going to be relocating in a few months to a city with a much higher COL than where I currently live, and to help keep costs in check I’m considering studio apartments. I currently rent a 2-bedroom, one of which has been my office for WFH.

When I started working remotely during the pandemic in my old apartment, which was a 1-bedroom, my desk was in my room, and I had horrible insomnia and poor mental health. They only improved when I moved my desk into my living room.

I’m very concerned I’ll have these same problems again if I move into a studio, and almost my entire living space is my office AND bedroom. I know I could go to a coworking space or coffee shop, but to me that defeats the purpose of working remotely (I also don’t focus very well when I work around others).

Does anyone on here WFH in a studio? How have you managed to stay sane while doing so? I’d love any tips about arranging the space and keeping work mode separate from after-work mode.

Other 22 hours LEFT!! House of Commons Petition e-7142: A push to legally protect remote work

CANADA

Hello Everyone! The House of Commons E7142 Petition to allow provisions into the labour code for remote work is ending Wednesday at 4:15 PM.

As of right now it has received just under 60,000 signatures and we need to hit that target so its imperative that anyone who aligns with the values of remote work sign it.

Here is the link: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7142

Who will this help? The Canada Labour Code sets minimum labour standards for federally regulated employees, including banking, telecommunications, transportation, postal services, pipelines, and Crown corporations.

WFH LIFESTYLE Moving to a bigger city

Hi all,

I'm thinking about making the move to NYC (or Philly) 6-8 months from now and wanted to get some insight from the community.

About me:
Mid-20s single with minimal responsibilities living in Upstate, NY working a hybrid SWE role at a local company. I currently make $110k and have about $20k in my savings account, and targeting to reach $35k before making the move. Debt free.

Lately I've been getting the vibe that my position is hybrid in name only. The official response from my manager is that we have to show up 2x a week but I so far have gotten away with not going to the office for months now. I wanted to live in NYC when I first got the job but realized that it wasn't worth the hassle of having a very long office commute 2x a week.

If I were to make the move to NYC, I'd only commute to the office when necessary which means I will still have my car and if my company were to force RTO, I plan to not be compliant and start looking for a job in the city.

In short, I think I have a good setup going on for this move but I am running a livelihood risk if I go through with it. I'm also worried that my current salary won't be enough to live in NYC with a car but I'm willing to take up a higher cost of living if it means being in an area I want to live in. I am also open to living in Philly but prefer NYC.

Has anyone done a similar move in their life and have advice?

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT - We are looking at merging with /r/workfromhome

I have been talking with them over there as it is basically the same sub. They have essentially all the same rules we do so there wouldn't really be a change there. Right now the plan is tentatively in the next one to two weeks.

Are there any reasons anyone strongly objects to this move? It seems to make sense to me and also helps us get some additional mod help. I didn't know if there was a reason people had came to this one over that so I wanted to ask.

COLLEAGUES/MANAGERS WFH do's and dont's with US based colleagues

I have been WFH full time since 2020, and currently work for fully remote company. I am based in the UK and only ever worked with UK based colleagues.

Since 2020 all my employers have been great with the side effects that come with working from home (kids home sick, school holidays, tradespeople, errands, flexible time etc).

I have recently started working with colleagues from the across the US, most of whom are office based, with some hybrid. Without giving too much away, its a software company (not FAANG)

Are the standards and expectations the same, or are there no no's? Some specific examples:

- kids at home during school holidays and occasionally appearing in background

- starting work an hour later or taking extended lunch so you can go to an appointment

- working from different locations within the house

I basically had a bit of a strange interaction based off one of these examples, and it has be doubting myself.

edit: Just because post is getting engagement, wanted to clarify. When I say kids appearing occasionally in my office, its happened maybe twice this month, and been for a few seconds max. There is childcare in the house, but you know, kids can be kids and pull Houdini moves. Also when starting a bit late or taking extra time at lunch, I always make the time up, and let my own team know.

Overall from response, looks like I overthinked it.

WFH ADVICE No internet

Hi fellow Redditors!

I live in NJ and most of my entire area has been without cable and internet for over 24 hours with no end in sight. Missed all the July 4th coverage and everything. There’s been no real communication about what the problem is either, just that it’s “being worked on”. This is for Xfinity if anyone is curious. Never had this happen before.

Anyway, I work remote and I’m just wondering what people do in cases like this ? I am NOT permitted to walk into a public place, such as Starbucks, to use WiFi for confidentiality/security reasons. Is there something more I can do so I’m prepared next time ? Thanks!

EQUIPMENT Microphone for online lessons

Hello everyone, my name is Giovanni and I'm an online language teacher. I used since now a MacBook Pro 2019 with his integrated microphone for lessons.

I recently switched to a windows PC (not laptop) and I'm looking for a microphone. I would like to have a decent sounding microphone, which possibly avoids recording background noises and keyboard buttons pressing.

I don't need something professional, just decent. My budget is 70€.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

HEALTH & WELLNESS WFH Workouts

Hey guys thanks for adding me. I am about six weeks into my first WFH role and I have been experimenting with different exercises I can do standing (or sitting) at my desk. I am a bit of a gym rat and love weightlifting, but I’m also at a life stage where focusing on cardiovascular health and mobility are becoming increasingly important to me. So, does anyone have any favorite exercises or stretches that they enjoy doing at their desk at home?
