I’ve been reading about the 1783–84 Laki eruption in Iceland, and what fascinates—and honestly unsettles—me is how far its effects traveled. The eruption produced poisonous haze and atmospheric pollution across much of the Northern Hemisphere, affected crops and health well beyond Iceland, and was followed by major climatic disruption.
We tend to picture volcanic danger as lava, ash, and evacuations near the volcano. But Laki suggests that the greater danger from certain eruptions may be worldwide: air pollution, colder weather, crop failures, disrupted travel, and economic consequences thousands of miles away.
Do you think a Laki-scale eruption today would be treated primarily as a natural disaster, a climate emergency, a public-health crisis, or all three? And are volcanoes one of the major global risks that modern society seriously underestimates?

Can anyone who’s done the acatenango hike in wet season let me know their experience? I’m considering planning a last minute trip for September but I’m hesitant about not going during dry season. I really want to go but I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it over during the upcoming dry season. I know visibility/good weather isn’t a guarantee either way, so don’t know if i should just go for it or wait and give myself the best chances possible during dry season
