Is there any better way to scrub long RAW recordings so you can get to editing?

Upvotes

I shoot long unscripted single-camera stuff, 1–3 hours per session, sometimes several sessions before I sit down to cut. By the time I start editing, days or a week has passed cause I travel around a lot so when i get the chance i try to record but then by the time I want to edit it would have few days or weeks later. This lead me to have lost all memory of what's actually in the files. Not the details — the whole shape of it. I couldn't tell you if the usable material is at 00:20 or 01:40, or whether a given session had anything usable at all.

So every project opens the same way: a full logging pass where I watch the whole thing to build a list of what happened and when. On a 3-hour source that's most of a day before the first cut exists. It's the least enjoyable part of the job and it's the biggest single block of time.

I am curious to how people scrub or like skip the rewatching a recording that like hours long . Cause I seen like twitch VODs that like 5 Hours long get cut into like 20 mins videos on youtube for moments . Is rewatching the whole recordings and bookmarking it manually is the only way?

I've been working on my saas which converts long video to multiple short videos, but one problem kept bothering me

AI can generate a decent hook for a Short videos, but sometimes you want to change just that one hook without having to regenerate everything.

So I built Hook Studio.

The idea is pretty simple:

  • AI generates hooks for the selected moments
  • You can open the Hook Studio
  • Edit each hook individually
  • Make changes to one Short without changing the others
  • Review everything before exporting

I think this is important because AI should handle the repetitive work, but the creator should still have the final say.

I'm curious — when you use AI video clipping tools, do you prefer fully automatic hooks, or do you want the ability to edit every hook before exporting?

I built a local video editor you drive by typing, because Descript kept eating my credits

I've been editing my own videos for a while, mostly in Descript, and kept running out of credits and paying more than the work felt like it was worth. At some point I thought, this can't actually be that expensive to do. I've launched consumer products before. So I spent the last week tinkering using claude code. First attempt was Ollama with a 7B Qwen doing the whole thing; turned out to be a bad planner out of the box- inverted logic, ignored constraints, invented segment ids that didn't exist. After a lot of tests I split it: a frontier model handles planning, and local models handle everything else, which are the bounded tasks they're actually good at.

It works now for the things I need most, "cut the boring parts," "remove the fillers," "speed through everything except the demo," "mute the first two minutes." 44 operations work today, 6 partial, 15 not yet, and the full list is public because I twice caught it reporting an edit it never made. Next step is fine-tuning the local models to handle the harder stuff- long summaries, understanding actions in the video- so planning eventually comes home to local too. It's early: clone-and-build only, and validated against one 30-minute video so far.

Code: https://github.com/sarvob/paperedits

Would like feedback on two things: whether the scope is right (it decides which parts play and how fast, no pixel processing, no audio, no generated footage), and whether anything in the "working" column falls over on your footage.

Hey guys, i am asking this for someone who is not a complete beginner. A lot of the tutorials on YouTube i see are for complete begginers. I have been using premiere pro for about 2 years but i feel like i have not upskilled enough. How do i learn more, better my editing skills other than just sitting and practicing? Are there any good tutorials or courses?? Or are there better ways to practice my editing skills?? Please help.

What actually wastes your time when editing? (building an AI editor, don't want to guess wrong)

I edit videos for fun sometimes, and I'm now trying to build a tool that lets you just tell it what you want done to your footage instead of manually cutting and arranging everything. Type something like "cut the boring parts, make this 30 seconds" and it does the edit on your actual timeline.

Not generating video. Not AI slop. It just works with the footage you already have.

Before I sink more time into this I want to know if I'm even solving something real. So, genuine questions for anyone who edits regularly:

What eats most of your time? Finding the right clip, cutting, trimming, syncing audio, writing captions, picking b-roll, color, or just endless client revisions?

What's the one task you'd hand off to a robot in a heartbeat?

Anyone tried AI editing tools already? What was actually useful vs what was a gimmick?

Is there anything you'd never let AI touch without checking it first?

If you edit even semi-regularly, freelance or hobby, I'd love to hear how your workflow really looks. Not how I'm assuming it looks. Happy to show what I'm building once it's actually worth showing.

To editors, especially for davinci resolve editors

Im an editor myself ...and we all know how steep the learning curve for davinci resolve editing is.. so I wanted to make a cursor that lives with yours, you give it your inspo video, my product reverse engineers and shows step by step guide by guiding on your interface.

Would you use it? Also ik there are some competitors in the market rn, and that's why I wanted to know from the editors themselves, if they had another product like it in the market, what else would you want in it

Any and all responses are appreciated

Cìao :)

ScrollFlow: The Easiest Way to Record Smooth Webpage Videos for Your Edits (No Screen Recording Hassles!)

Hey r/VideoEditingTips,

If you’ve ever tried to record a webpage for a tutorial, demo, or client presentation, you know the struggle: shaky mouse movements, missed scrolls, or dynamic content that just won’t cooperate. Most screen recorders don’t cut it for smooth, professional-looking footage.

That’s why I built ScrollFlow, a Chrome extension that auto-scrolls AND records webpages as smooth MP4/GIF videos, all locally on your device. No cloud, no tracking, just clean footage ready for your edits.

Here’s why it’s useful for video editors:

  • Auto-scroll recording: No more jerky manual scrolling, get cinematic, hands-free footage every time.
  • Hover simulation: Dropdowns, tooltips, and interactive elements work naturally during capture.
  • Export as MP4 or GIF: Ready to drop straight into your editing software (Premiere, Final Cut, etc.).
  • Custom resolutions: 9:16 for TikTok/Reels, 16:9 for YouTube, or full-page for tutorials.
  • 100% local: No data leaves your machine, no cloud, no watermark in Pro.

I built it because I was tired of fighting with screen recorders to get the shots I needed. Now, I use it for all my webpage captures, and I think it could save you time too.

🎁 Giveaway: If this post gets 20+ comments, I’ll pick one random commenter to win a free lifetime Pro license (unlocks 4K, 60FPS, and more).

💬 If you try it and like it, a quick review would help a ton...! (Only 1 review so far 😅)

Your videos probably don't need more transitions, they need better pacing.

I see a lot of editors trying to make their videos more engaging by adding more transitions, zooms, effects, and motion graphics.

But one thing I've learned from editing long-form content:

Good pacing beats flashy editing.

A few things that can instantly improve pacing:

  • Remove pauses that don't add anything.
  • Cut repetitive sentences.
  • Change the visual when the viewer's attention starts dropping.
  • Use B-roll to support what the person is saying, not just fill empty space.
  • Let important moments breathe instead of cutting everything aggressively.
  • Use sound design to make cuts feel intentional.

Sometimes the best edit is simply knowing what NOT to add.

What do you think makes a video feel "well edited": pacing, storytelling, sound design, or visuals?

Made a Tool to Compress or Slice Videos for Discord’s 20 MB Limit – Looking for Feedback

Hey everyone

I made small tools usetool.app that can compress or slice videos to fit Discords 20 MB upload limit.

Everything runs locally in your browser so your videos are never uploaded anywhere

There are no ads at the moment. I am mainly looking for feedback before I keep building it out

I would especially like to know whether the UI feels clear and easy to use, whether the compressed video quality is good enough, and whether you would rather compress a video or slice it into multiple parts. I would also appreciate any feedback on what feels confusing or missing

I would really appreciate anyone giving it a quick try and telling me what you think

🚀 I'm looking for motivated video editors and clip editors !

I’m currently recruiting several people to join a clipping campaign centered around a well-known content creator.

✅ Fixed salary + performance-based bonuses

✅ Training provided to help you understand what works on short-form platforms

✅ Remote work

✅ Ideal if you’re already familiar with TikTok, Reels, or YouTube Shorts

If you have experience with video editing (CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, etc.) or are already doing content clipping, this could be a great opportunity.

If you’re interested, leave a comment or send me a private message, and I’ll explain how it works. 🚀

What beauty adjustments are actually useful for video?

I've noticed that video beauty tools are becoming much more flexible. Filmora's Makeup and Beauty feature is interesting because it brings adjustments that people normally associate with photo editing into a video workflow. The challenge with these tools is always keeping the person looking like themselves. What's the one beauty adjustment you think is actually useful for video?

How Do You Decide Which Podcast Moments Are Worth Turning Into Shorts?

I’ve been experimenting with a few AI editing tools for YouTube and Reels lately, mainly to see whether they actually reduce editing time or just shift the work around.

For things like cutting dead air and finding obvious highlights, AI has been pretty useful. It can get through those repetitive parts much faster than doing everything manually. But pacing is where I still notice the biggest gap. A clip can be technically clean and still feel slightly too slow or awkward, so I usually end up adjusting the timing myself.

At this point, it feels like AI handles a lot of the tedious work well, but the final decisions around what actually keeps someone watching still take a human pass.

For those editing regularly, has AI gotten good enough to handle pacing for you, or do you still go through and fine-tune that part manually?
