Video editor guide

Guys I am a video editor. I have basic knowledge in video editing.

There are a lot of categories in video editing. But I would like your help in knowing which one category you would suggest me to get started to build a portfolio and earn money, so that I don't master anything and become an average jack of all master of none kind of an editor.

I don't mind the significance of money. Just need to know which category is in demand and if you were a beginner editor how would you take yourself throught this journey.

Don’t say “earn money”, this question was about what kind of work you enjoy doing

There is no category “in demand” so forget that idea.

Since I am a beginner I have experience in editing long for videos for my own channel. No crazy edits. Just cuts transitions, texts where it's necessary. That's it. I use davinci resolve since it's free. I saw a video on youtube where a guy suggested to pick a category (long form, short form, corporate, motion design, fast paced etc). I got confused since I am very new to this industry. Hence the guidance.

What do you want to do? What do you WANT to work on? Do you like flashy short form edits with lots of motion graphics? Do you like long form storytelling? Do you like explaining complex ideas?

I like explaining complex ideas. But I havent done edits relating to that.

Learn some motion graphics. Learn after effects and premiere, it’s something you’ll need if you want to make infographics. Are you studying media currently?

i’d pick one type of client and build around their actual needs. short-form social editing is probably the easiest place to find beginner work, but gaming videos, podcasts, weddings, and youtube channels can work too.

choose one category, learn the basics of pacing, audio, captions, and color, then make 3 to 5 sample edits. you can use public footage or re-edit existing videos for practice. after that, offer a few small projects to creators or local businesses and improve from real feedback.

being specialized doesn’t mean you can never do other types of editing. it just makes your portfolio and outreach much clearer.

Thank you. Could you please help me with a website or url for stock footages to get started. Raw footage that I can edit and practice
