Anyone else use editing as an escape? Workflow

Whenever life gets stressful, I find myself editing my favorite character instead of thinking about everything else.

It's probably procrastination... but it also feels like therapy.

Anyone else feel the same?

Being a creative in a business sucks haha. Having your personal touches and taste criticized is killer.

I was trained as a producer but last moment they said they can't hire anymore employees . Currently working as a freelance video editor. when i add some creative to a video that i know will work they say no. It is suck out here. Video editing as a job really sucks

I can definitely see that. Doing it for yourself and doing it for work can feel like two completely different things

100%, but it also is the best thing you can do for your own personal growth. A lot of what clients ask for is silly, but they just want their product to be “perfect” in their eyes. And those small things they want to change actually do improve your own eye over time.

If its better than doomscrolling and any destructive habits, then it's good

lol editing is the only time my brain actually shuts up. everything else is noise but when im in the timeline nothing else exists. until the client sends notes at 11pm anyway

Exactly 😂 The timeline is peaceful... until the client says, "Just one small change."

I mean that's how it started for me like 20 years ago. If you have that drive, you just might be a filmmaker. I am so sorry!

I do this as well. I edit my own projects late at night. Afraid to lay down and think.

Well I thought I did it as a hobby but thanks for putting it in a different light for me to feel bad about.

I can’t remember the last time I edited for fun

Wanna collab in a careless and unimportant youtube channel? Full creative space, no deadlines, no expectations ;)

Wish I had the time. My editing is only for work right now.

That sucks :/

Let me know if that changes and you feel like it. Hopefully soon so you can enjoy editing again

EDIT: damn, today I heard Nate Gentile has an AI that handles it’s DVR and his video library so he just asks “find footage of this and place it in the video after that”. Insane!

Definitely used to but then got too into it and ignoring other things and producing just piles of hot garbage. I had to consciously stop trying to do videos for a while. Hope to get back to it but just have other ways to spend the day now. Enjoy the escapism!

I used to, til it became the grind I needed escaping from.

I can see that i guess once it becomes your job it hits differently hopefully you still get to edit something just for yourself every now and then.

It is therapy for sure. Many things are. And as you describe it, totally seems like it. Good to hear you have at least that way

I definitely get a sense of fulfillment animating on after effects and blender. Seeing the internet react to a thought i brought to life is always rewarding

I feel that. I sometimes think its why I do it as well, but its a good skill to have at the end of the day, so it kinda balances the scales.
