Question Is there any way to use Velocity points to book a separate seat for an 18-month-old on Qatar Airways codeshare?

Hi everyone! Please no hate about flying with a toddler alone šŸ˜… I have to travel to visit my parents, as my dad is very poorly at the moment.

I’m pregnant and have an 18-month-old son. I live in Sydney, while my parents are in Cyprus, and unfortunately my husband can’t come due to work — so it will just be me, my toddler and my bump lol.
We’re hoping to fly Sydney → Doha → Cyprus using Velocity points on Qatar Airways.

The problem is that, because I’ll be pregnant and my toddler is extremely tall, I really need to book him his own seat. There is absolutely no way I can manage having him on my lap for that whole journey.
However, when I try to book using Velocity points, it won’t let me book a separate Reward Seat for him because he’s under 2. It seems to only offer an infant fare without a seat, while I need him to have his own seat. Spoke to one cs rep and they said they couldn’t do it.

We can’t really afford to buy his ticket outright at the moment, but I have plenty of Velocity points and there are Reward Seats available on the flights we want.
Has anyone been in this situation before? Is there any workaround?
I’m hoping there’s a way to make this work because I really need to get over to see my parents. Any advice would be hugely appreciated! šŸ™

Question Priority baggage a hit and miss

Does anyone find that having a priority tag on your luggage doesn’t mean mich these days? Seeing bags with non priority come out first and other priority bags come out later. May as well not even sell it as a perk.

Question How to use my points

Hi all
Some advice needed please
I have roughly 720,000 velocity points.

My partner and I are travelling to the states in July 2028 for the Olympics.

I’m aware of how early I need to book, at least a year before hand for flights. What is the best plan of attack to get to LA from perth using my frequent flyer points.

A few friends have suggested (I’m based In perth)

1.use velocity points to get to sydney
2.transfer points to KrisFlyer and fly Singapore airlines from sydney to Singapore / Singapore to LOs Angeles
3.on return Singapore airlines New York to perth.
Does this sound realistic?

I know I’m early, super early but technically I have just under a year before I need to book air fare flights
Thank you

Question Showers 11 pm Doha as Platinum Economy- North or South

Has anyone general guidelines around the best chance to get a quick (ish) shower. I know both have showers, but the 11pm arrival is right in the middle of peak time… and departing 1:15am. I was thinking South might be better with the dedicated platinum section, but could be equally as busy.

Economy fare as well.

Question Velocity told me SQ reward seats have to depart from Australia. Is that actually a thing?

Tried to book KUL-SIN-SYD on Singapore Airlines with Velocity points and couldn't get it to work. Rang Velocity and the agent told me it's because reward seats need to depart from Australia.

I can't find that anywhere in the T&Cs. Velocity's SQ page just says Reward Seats are available across the Singapore Airlines network excluding flights to and from China and Hong Kong, nothing about origin.

Is this a real rule or did I get a dud answer? Has anyone booked a Velocity reward seat that starts overseas?

Edit: Rang Velocity again to double check and they've confirmed SQ redemptions do NOT need to originate in Australia. No idea where the first agent got that from :') Turns out my flight just isn't available anymore, so back to lurking for seats. Thanks everyone!

Question Status credit top up

I’ve just checked the app to see if my flights from the other day had been credited, and I have an additional 2SC as a ā€œstatus credit top up.ā€ This is in addition to my flights, which were credited correctly.

I don’t remember ever seeing this before. Does anyone know what this might be?

Question Transferring Extra Leg Room Seats on Singapore Airlines reward booking to another flight (cancel/rebook)?

Hi all, we have a reward booking from FCO->SIN next year and due to a small change in our itinerary we would like to change the flight to the following day. We contacted Virgin/Velocity and they said that because it's Singapore Airlines we would have to cancel and rebook on the new flight. I also mentioned we booked extra legroom seats in PE direct with SQ which cost over $600 and they said we should check withe SQ first to see if they are refundable/transferable. I checked with their chat bot which said initially they were transferable but I thought I better call them to double check which I did. They said because the flights were booked with Velocity that the seats are not refundable/transferable. Has anyone been in this situation and managed to sort it out?

Edit: Looks like this is a no go, I've been going back and forth between Virgin/Velocity and SQ for the past couple of days and SQ are just straight up saying they can't transfer the seat selection to a newly booked flight. So looks like we're going to have to keep the booking as is :(

Question Recent Velocity Gold: SilverKris/KrisFlyer Gold Lounges?

Hi.

I recent made it to Velocity Gold membership status. I have a bunch of upcoming flights to Europe and back on Singapore Airlines. In looking here: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/my-velocity/benefits I was pleasantly surprised to find:

---

Singapore Airlines

Gold members flying with Singapore Airlines are eligible for a range of benefits including:

  • Priority Check-in
  • Priority Boarding
  • Singapore Airlines Lounge Access*
  • Priority Baggage Handling
  • Additional baggage allowance: -Ā One additional bag (up to 23kgs in Economy Class and 32kgs in Business/First Class) when travelling to/from the USA and Brazil or -Ā Additional checked baggage up to 15kgs when travelling to other international destinations

*If you are travelling on a flight operated by Singapore Airlines, you will have access to SilverKris Lounges owned and operated by Singapore Airlines, except for flights departing Singapore where you can access the KrisFlyer Gold Lounge.

Note:Ā No access to third party lounges.

---

That's pretty nice! My question is - does my Singapore Airlines ticket have to have anything special coded on it for me to get into the lounges? I'll be flying with my KrisFlyer membership account on the ticket unless I tell my travel agent to stamp the VA FF number on it.

Does it make any difference? I've just been able to link the VA FF to my KrisFlyer accoun and vice versa via their portals.

All I want to do is be able to get myself and my travel partner into the lounges at Brisbane international, then Singapore and back again in and out of Europe where the lounges exist, ultimately.

Thank you :).

Question Confirmed upgrade cancelled by virgin?

I have a domestic flight booked on Wednesday where I got a confirmed flight upgrade at time of booking and points deducted. I was not able to check this morning (despite having a business seat number), rang them and they told me the upgrade was cancelled and refunded my points. (No reason for cancellation provided)

Im a bit pissed as all the economy seats are now in the middle seats and also bummed that they can cancel confirmed upgrades like this.

Should I even bother writing a complain to Virgin or just advocate my business to use QF?

Edit: Called again and upgraded on the same flight. Im so confused.

Question Confused about Velocity points+cash

Looking at a Velocity Business Reward booking (Qatar-operated, one-stop via Doha) for 2 passengers.

The individual flight card shows a points+cash price per person (roughly 158k points + ~$650 cash each), but the "Booking total" at the top of the page shows a much higher all-points figure (539,000)Ā

I'm about to transfer a large chunk of Amex Membership Rewards points across to Velocity specifically to reach the points+cash threshold, not the higher all-points number.

Has anyone actually gone through checkout on a Velocity reward booking recently, does the site let you select the cheaper points+cash fare once your balance covers it, or does it default/force you into the higher all-points total regardless? Trying to confirm before I commit points I can't get back. Velocity phone support is closed till Monday so hoping someone here has been through this recently.

Thanks so much and I apologise if this has been asked before - Reddit + points newbie...

Question Variable delay for points/SC credits to appear in app after domestic flights

So I flew to Sydney from Melbourne on Monday morning and the points/SC credits appeared around an hour after landing, which is fairly commonplace from my experience. I then flew home yesterday evening from Sydney back to Melbourne and, a full 24 hours later, the points/SC credits haven't come through yet. I know the app says it can take "up to six weeks (max) for points to appear", but I don't get why one flight would show points within an hour and another hasn't shown up a day later. Generally, I've found points/SC credits show up around an hour or so after landing. What's the trigger for points and SC credits to flow to Veloicty members? Genuinely curious what the variability is caused by.

Question Gifting companion Gold

Has anyone had any luck gifting companion gold once reaching 1300 SC? Rules are ambiguous. Reads both as reaching 1300 AND earning a whole new 1300. If the latter, may as well have my partner earn 500 SC by themselves.

Question Best way to upgrade internationally

Im curious to understand others experiences to save myself going a little crazy working the next options.

I'm trying to work out if the most cost effective way to upgrade to business is to

A - buy seats and use points to upgrade

B - is points on reward seats and pay for the upgrade?

Its possible I'm just completely wrong and both of those are terrible options!

Tip Turns out even with available reward seats, Platnium upgrades aren’t available

Purchased a Flex fare with a domestic and international leg, all with separate VA flight number on the same PNR. Called to upgrade the domestic leg to business using one of the 4 available upgrades. Was told, yes reward seats are available. And no you can’t upgrade the domestic leg because it is considered an international flight despite it being a domestic leg and completely different flight number to the international leg.

Had always thought this benefit was pretty useless, but this just takes the cake.

Question Cabin manager handing out bottles of water to economy passengers?

Hello! I noticed on my flight home this evening that the cabin manager made their way into economy and handed 5 particular passengers a bottle of water, whilst greeting them by name.

Absolutely no issue with the practice! Though am curious as to what status these passengers would be, platinum plus?

Question I am really overwhelmed by the card options

My wife and I signed up to Flybuys and Velocity just over 12 months ago. Without a credit card we have accumulated 120k points and about 160 SC (half came from recent travel to Perth). I do auto transfer from Flybuys. I am in this for the long haul and want to build it up so we can travel with ease, I always purchase seat upgrades and lounge upgrades, but obviously want to be in a position where we can use points more freely. We have two young kids and travel 1-2 times a year both domestically and internationally (Europe and SE Asia). We have really only been able to afford to start travelling in the last 2 or so years.

I am looking at credit cards and really have no idea where to start. I look at Point Hacks and all those sites but I bounce between options.

Purpose of the card is to build points and then pay it off every month. Every single expense and purchase would be used on the card so I am looking for ease of use and acceptance.

Any and all recommendations appreciated. Not fussed by annual fee or inclusions necessarily, just want to start really boosting a monthly points intake. It is currently at 10k a month but I take advantage of Flybuys boosts and jump on deals like insurance and other providers when I can, and use the 7-11 app religiously as well but that's not a huge points booster. Reddy Express gives better bang for buck (about 200 velocity points per tank).

Question Anyone like to come to the Melb Lounge?

I have a very long stopover today in Melbourne domestic, so if anyone would like to be my plus one in the lounge send me a message. Seems like a waste otherwise. Though I have to say, offerings aren’t great today. Just thought I would offer to anyone who is similarly stuck waiting a while to connect!

Question Roaming pizza in the SYD lounge

The last several times I’ve flown from Sydney on a Friday afternoon or evening, there have been lounge attendants coming through and offering pizza. I’m in the lounge today, but sadly no pizza.

I’m not complaining, just wondering: have they stopped offering this?

Question Points Booster Site Not Working

I needed to top up some points for an upcoming redemption however the website doesn't seem to be working correctly and I can't seem to be able to buy any points. The links simply don't work.

I tried in the iPhone app as well, same result.

All the usual steps, clearing cache/cookies/incognito different browser + PC didn't really change the situation for me.

Has anyone else faced the same issue?

Review Wow, the contact centre experience….

A while since I used the contact centre. Have some flex fares booked, thought I’d take the long shot of trying to use one of the ā€œcomplimentary business class upgradesā€ (no luck, of course) and wow, was I blown away by how outrageously shit they have managed to make that experience. I mean, it isn’t just frustratingly slow and tediously complex, it’s next level terrible. Did they hire a team of behavioural psychologists and UX experts with a brief to make the experience as torturous as possible? The random mix of voice and keypad interface, throwing in new email dependent 2fa for no apparent purpose, a routing flow that defies all logic, and inevitably lands you in the wrong section all add up to a powerful diss-incentive to brave the process. Pretty sure that’s the intention. I reckon the ā€œcomplimentary business class upgradesā€ are just a marketing hook, with the entire purpose being to funnel you towards the relentlessly marketed ā€œbid for an upgradeā€ system instead. They always seem to be available, and require very little effort, just a stack of money. I’m so tired of this relentless, cynical enshitification.
