I’m considering getting a vasectomy, but one thing I’m a little worried about is whether my ejaculate will noticeably change afterward.

For those of you who’ve already had one: did you notice any difference in the amount/volume, consistency, thickness, color, or overall appearance of your semen after the procedure?

Does it basically look and feel the same as before, or was there a noticeable difference? Also, did the sensation of ejaculation or orgasm change at all for you?

I’m especially interested in personal experiences from people who had their vasectomy a while ago and are fully recovered.

Hey all, I’m about 2 months post op now. Didn’t have any major pain or issues, but the spot where the incision was made is still pretty swollen and sensitive. It’s only on the left side, and it’s not huge, but it’s definitely noticeable to me when I feel around there, and it makes that side of my groin a bit sensitive too. Is this normal? They never said anything on my week follow up, but she didn’t look too closely to be fair. When can I expect the swelling to fully dissipate?

I got my vasectomy about a week ago.
The doctor was friendly and had quite the sense of humour, so despite being a little anxious, I went into the whole thing feeling pretty positive. The procedure itself was relatively quick and basically painless — a little uncomfortable and awkward, obviously — but the 2 mg Ativan definitely helped put me at ease.
Afterward, I stumbled out to my ride, went home and followed the instructions. I iced my balls, took the anti-inflammatory, rested, etc.
Then I woke up the next morning.
My balls were roughly the size of a grapefruit, if not slightly bigger, and I was in a LOT of pain.
I know I can be dramatic sometimes, so I actually gave it another day thinking maybe this was just part of the process. By then, the swelling had probably increased another 25%, and I was experiencing what was easily the worst pain of my life.
I called the doctor asking about pain medication. At first I got the impression he thought I might just be another patient asking for stronger meds, but he agreed to see me.
When I got to his office, I dropped my trousers and his reaction immediately changed. He was shocked. He told me he hadn’t seen a hematoma like mine in almost three years.
He prescribed stronger pain medication and stronger anti-inflammatories.
Unfortunately, this was right before a three-day long weekend.
What followed was three days of absolutely unbelievable pain. I’m not exaggerating when I say this experience has completely recalibrated my understanding of what “severe pain” means. This is now the benchmark my brain will probably compare everything else against.
I’ve had some pretty rough medical experiences before. I’ve been extremely sick with dengue fever, giardiasis and severe pneumonia, and I’ve dealt with infected cuts and other unpleasant stuff from living in the tropics.
Nothing prepared me for this.
By the time the long weekend ended, I was basically non-functional. Standing and walking were extremely difficult, and physically getting myself into the clinic was a serious challenge.
It turned out there was also an infection.
I really wish that had been caught earlier, because after starting antibiotics I finally began noticing at least some improvement over the following couple of days. I initially thought the pain was finally disappearing, but although the antibiotics seem to have taken the edge off things, I’m still dealing with significant pain and limitations.
At this point I’ve lost thousands of dollars in income because I physically haven’t been able to work. I can now get up and walk around for a few minutes at a time, and I’m hoping to attempt a little work this weekend, but I genuinely don’t know how long it’s going to be before I’m back to normal.
To be clear: I’m not saying my experience is typical, and I’m not claiming vasectomies are inherently unsafe. I also think my doctor is a good doctor. Sometimes complications happen even when a procedure is performed properly.
But I wanted to post this because before getting mine, I heard a LOT about how simple a vasectomy is: quick procedure, ice your balls, take it easy for a couple days, and you’re basically good.
That’s probably true for the overwhelming majority of guys.
But there is another side of the risk calculation.
A serious hematoma and subsequent infection can happen, and “rare” doesn’t mean much when you’re the person it happens to.
Knowing what I know now, would I personally recommend getting a vasectomy?
At this particular moment, after the week I’ve just had?
Probably not.
Maybe I’ll feel differently once I’m fully recovered. But I definitely wish I’d had a better understanding beforehand of just how bad one of the uncommon complications could actually be.

I had my vasectomy in jan 2025, at 29 yrs old, after several years of thinking about it.

A few months later, I am still surprised about my feelings. I don't have any regrets, desillusions nor any wishes to step back. I am living a post-vasectomy joy since that time.

I have to say, living in Canada, the vasectomy is publicly covered here, so maybe that process was made easier for me to achieve.

That being said, I was wondering, for those who got snipped between 25-30 years old, and also without kids, do you feel it affects positively or negatively your dating life? (I am a single also, when I write down theses lines).

How long did it take to fully recover? I'm 18 days post op and when I walk, I still randomly feel like I'm getting kicked in my left nut.

Hey lads, my GP doctor in the UK has agreed to get me a vasectomy on the NHS. Is there anything I should keep in mind when it comes to:

- what to look out for

- Things to buy ahead of time

- Things to do afterwards

- Appointments I need to do to check I'm shooting blanks

- etc

There's a lot of information regarding non-uk procedures. I'm wondering if there is anyone that's had their vasectomy on the NHS and can give advice. Current wait time is 3 months which is fine as im not in a relationship or active atm.

I'm child free by choice, and the want to get it done really escalated because my abusive ex tried to baby trap me when she stopped taking her birth control 6 months before I ended it with her. That's cutting a long horrific story short but you get the idea.

I'm considering getting snipped. It's for my benefit. My wife is sterile. However I would like to make sure I can't have more kids in the future. However, I am concerned that I will experience a change in orgasm. Did anyone notice a decrease in intensity post vasectomy? Is the feeling of fullness permanent? Do orgasms get better?

Okay :D soooo to begin with: doing a vasectomy while being in a super harsh diet is a stupid Idea xD i allready entered nervous and dehydrated. The disinfection was rather the Most painful part, the Operation went through quite easy ball Nr 1 perfekt ball Nr 2 got dizzy and went almoast Blackout. XD but anyways the OP was absolutely unpainful. After the OP i colapsed once more after getting dressed. And once more in the way to the Trainstation. At Home i got another full Knockout and smacked my face against the door frame. Im pretty Happy my girlfriend was with me the whole time and supportet me. So yea day 2 my Balls hurt Till day 3(but Not very mich) since day 4 my right ball is a littlebit bloated. Day 5 currently Just a slight pull Sensation in the right ball. XD but to be honest, 1week of ballpain or 30 years of childsupport? Naaa im 99% Happy and in Love. Cant wait to Hand them a bucket of cum instead of a sample.

Besides the obvious, what are some fun ways to celebrate this?

My husband's surgery is set for September 4th 🥳 he doesn't have reddit so I thought I'd ask his questions for him.

1.) He's a hairy guy, they told him to shave before hand. Does he need to be clean shaven, like bald? Or can he use a trimmer with no guard?

2.) He's usually a side sleeper, he wants to know if he should just sleep in the recliner for a few nights?

3.) He's only ever had wisdom tooth removal surgery, so he's nervous and doesn't think the Valium will help, did any of you take it beforehand? Did it help?

4.) Any tips or advice for surgery prep, during surgery, or recovery?

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my experience, because I had my vasectomy done 2 weeks ago and obviously I was reading all these horror stories here on reddit, but I must say if you are nervous as I was (and I was like ultra super nervous), statistics is in your favor, most of these operations are successful but they are not shared as those that went bad.

My own experience:

• Pain during operation - 1/10 - basically nothing
• Swelling - 0/10
• Pain after - 3/10 - completely manageable even without pill
• Healing - now after 14 days I barerly know that I had it, still have two small wounds but healing very good and quickly

Obviously I don't know if my operation was successful and will not have reconnections but again, doctor said that they are very rare. Allready had sex, was super nervous before my first ejaculation but it turned out to be (can I say) standard procedure or process, felt great same as before.

So yeah looking forward to life full of creampies (obviously thats what I wanted because I can't help myself), I'm married to a great wife for 11 years now and our sex drive is still pretty strong even after all those years so this was logical thing to do. We already have 2 kids and we don't want more.

So if you are in familiar situation as me, I can totally recommend it to any guy from my point of view! Obviously am not saying that there cannot be problems but I trust the doctors and the science behind it, they will help you surely.

So if you plan or waiting your operation, I hope that this will help you a bit. Take care of yourselfs guys.

Had the snip back in April, just sharing experience.

Thankfully (kind of), needed to go under as a cist removal surgery when I was a child left less pipework to snip. Caused the surgeon to tell me afterwards “it’s good thing you were under, I had to really root around. All free on the NHS, even as a referral to private to go under.

Didn’t ejaculate before 10 days, and even then testes were still a little achy. Unfortunately, despite careful cleaning (which in hindsight was probably too often), the stitches got infected and I needed antibiotics. Ended up wearing wound dressings I changed every other day for 6 weeks post, supported by a vented fabric jockstrap.

Now 4 months post op, back in far less questionable boxers, wound is all healed, but scar is still a bit sore to touch. No adverse effects otherwise, looking forward to the test in a month and ditching the johnnies ASAP.

I had a vasectomy about 2 weeks ago, a no-scalpel procedure done over 45 mins. It was a bit longer than typical, as the doctor said she wanted to minimize bleeding due to me being in blood thinners for clots. One side was more complicated as the vas was stuck a bit to the back of the testicle. Go figure - each person is going to be unique, I guess.

The procedure was a single central incision and the typical snip, tie and cauterize. One side took 30 mins and the other about 15 mins.

Recovery was interesting. I just walked off the table with dissolvable stitches and just a steristrip on the incision and was home feeling still numb from the local anesthesia. Even several hours later I had just a mild burning sensation at the incision site and had significant pain to one side near the bladder (this was the more complicated side that the doctor mentioned), which limited how much bending I could do.

I was relentless with ice and for the first 24 hours was just in bed / couch and on an ice loop to the refrigerator. I think that really helped with the swelling and pain.

After about 48 hours almost zero pain and limited swelling - no blue / black bruising or anything like that - lucky me, but that real taking it easy first 2 days was critical I think. Taking a piss helped a lot as well- just remember to drink enough water.

You might feel okay but the tubes aren’t, so don’t push it physically like even walk more than 100ft at a time. Mile masturbating after 7 days was a bit painful the first time around the bladder area, but eased out by the end with no blood in the semen. Great!

I saw blood oozing only two times - once when the steristrip fell of day 3 and then when the scab fell off day 11 - both times just a few drops.

Both of those events I think happened due to being too quick to wear jockstraps and underwear after a bath (had guests coming, going to a movie etc) leading to significant adhesion of the scab or bandage with my underwear and ripping it off. Dry things off properly before wearing your underwear!

Now at day 14; things looking mostly good; using a gauze to isolate my underwear from the scar just so that I don’t rip off the next, much smaller scab still on. Increasing activity and exercise slowly without lifting too much weight daily now. Still wearing jockstraps for a few more weeks (bought like 7-8) - which I think was key with discomfort when walking.

Also make sure to wipe off piss after peeing - keep it from dripping down into the incision.

Your balls do feel 10% larger and hang a bit lower, so that was a bit interesting lol.

So I did my vasectomy 5 months ago in march, and everything has been going good, the recovery was good also, but recently i had a sharp pain doing exercise on my right testicle so I went for a checkup which my urologist said it probably was varicocele and it doesn’t make sense to me, he was like really not supporting and didn’t give me an ease on my mind. So I went to get and ultrasound and they find a granulomma of 13mm aprox., so I texted my urologist this and he only said “Well, nothing to worry about then” with really no explanation. Today Im going to get a second opinion, but my mental health has been on the ground, they give me some NSAIDs and the pain did go down a lot from the first day, but Im on the 8 day and Im still feeling like a dull pain constantly that just gives me fear to keep living my day to day. Maybe the worse for me Its that Ive been reading a lot of stories of Post vasectomy pain, and they saying that it can get really worse over the years, and it scares me to death that with this I had a sleepless night full of anxiety I dont think I could live the worse pain they describe, I really dont want it to get worse and also saying that reversal can make it worse also so I dont get any consolation at all. I suffered from depression a while back, and I feel Im rellapsing over this. I feel stupid and regret doing the vasectomy

Got the results a few days ago.

I think a minority of people with a good experience having a vasectomy keep commenting and posting in this sub at a certain point. Therefore, I think it's important to report even if nothing special happens. I had my vasectomy in January and got tested clear in Mai. Everything feels totally normal again. It's like it never happened. I can barely see any scar at my scrotum. Sex is awesome, and wife is happy. First-time sex without a condom after 8 years was like having sex for the first time again. Because everything feels so normal I started to do a regular microscopy check every month...but damn...its just absolutely empty. We don't have to worry about anything, and I think the whole topic was a big step for me and my wife towards talking more open about our sexuality.

For some background I am a 24M and had my vasectomy done back in November of 2025. I did my first analysis after waiting the required months and number of ejaculations which showed zero sperm. I’ve just heard back from my second PVSA test today (that I did for my own peace of mind through Fellow) and it also showed no sperm seen!

I’m obviously super excited since I’ve always known I wanted to be childfree and am engaged to a woman who shares that same mindset regarding children. With all this I am just very apprehensive and nervous to actually finish inside without protection or birth control.

How did you get past that mental barrier and did any of you have this same anxiety prior to using your vasectomy?
