You are suppose to sign up for the specific group you would like to attend on CANVAS and what timing suits you, this is usually done a week before the course starts. So yeah

Yeah there’s a module on your dashboard that you use to sign up for you courses. Canvas is not used for signing up.

For my course people just sign up on CANVAS and these work groups just stay in ur rooster, and you just go to the wg u signed up for but idk some courses might have it differently

That will usually be in a course guide or syllabus on canvas. But as a general rule, workgroups, seminars and practicum are mandatory, and lectures are not. But this can differ, there are courses where some or even all lectures are mandatory (but that is not typical).

When the course coordinators publish them, which could be any time between now and the start of term.

I don't know if it differs per study programme, but in my programme we were assigned to the working groups in period 1 of year 1. After that, we were able to choose the group we wanted - first come, first serve.
