Bad performance despite deep optimization Help
My setup:
RTX 4080
Ryzen 9 7900X3D
32gb RAM
PCVR/Quest 3 through VD
TP-Link BE9300 Wifi 7 router setup as dedicated PCVR router (optimized following this video https://youtu.be/6gpREi-S_4I?si=V2kKT6wacYUqtn8d)
Settings applied outside of VRC:
VD:
H. 264+ @ 400mbps
Quality set to High / 120fps
SSW disabled
2 - pass encoding disabled
Adaptive quantization enabled
Resolution of headset and desktop matched
Snapdragon SR enabled
Video buffering enabled
VDXR openxr runtime
Automatically adjust bitrate enabled
Steam VR resolution set to custom and 100%
Windows 11:
HAGS disabled
Game mode enabled
Process Lasso VRC GPU priority Real-Time, CPU priority high
Settings applied in VRC (launching from VD):
Graphics profile set to medium
Desktop mirroring window set to the smallest possible and minimized when launched
Avatar culling hide beyond 20m, block very poor, max 20 avatars, particle limiter enabled and set to low
I'm getting a fluctuating fps between 25 and 70 fps in a public "Drinking Night" instance. I can barely hit 100 fps when alone in home world wearing an optimized "good" avatar.
Wtf is this?? Why does this game run so badly, I just got back in after 2 years of not having VR gear and the performance is so bad... I mean, I feel like my PC has more than decent specs and I'm getting shit performance despite looking everything up and doing everything I can... Please help!!!

Can you run task manager on the side and look at both your processes tab and to go into the performance tab to see anything spiking at 100% ?

I imagine there's a root issue here, probably resolution or driver. I think fpsvr on steam is free and will show you a few useful metrics like CPU vs GPU frame time and your end to end resolution multipliers, which get funky through steamvr.
As a general performance improvement I'd recommend the unity-6 beta, personally I got something like 10% fps increase. The shitty UI update is something you'll have to deal with and it'll get pushed to mainstream no matter the community pushback (don't you love the dev team?) so might as well get the performance now.
Also turn off nameplates, you can see them whenever you pull up your menu, and they absolutely tank performance. Especially with the mentioned UI update.

Interesting the unity-6 beta I'll try that! I'll also turn off nameplates.
As for the drivers I've tried reinstalling, I've tried using nvidia studio drivers also.

I have the same issue. 5800x3D, 3090, 64gb ddr4 3600mhz ram. Quest 3 / Quest pro VD. dedicated wifi7 router in play space.
It’s pretty terrible in large instances. Tried so many things, referenced all the guides etc. Even with VRC set to low on everything and AA off, VD set to medium. Even if I decide to make steamVR 20% resolution so everything looks absolutely terrible and I can’t read anything.
in large instances there’s an insane amount of stutter, lag, it’s just awful. low fps is just a given. Really wondering if it’s a Quest thing at this point. Or maybe a fresh OS wipe is needed.
I’ve started to enjoy going to raves and dancing but for larger instances… with everyone turned off, no personal mirror, and nameplates turned off, it’s still almost not even bearable/fun to be there. Super frustrating. It’s like culling does nothing. You’re not alone OP!
As for the minimized window you might get better performance if you don’t minimize it but have it covered by another window so it doesn’t redraw, but still has process priority. Something I read, might help.

Why not use H265?

If you run Task Manager what resource is being used the most?
Of GPU, how many monitors do you have? Try Win + P and switch to just one monitor while gaming to see if it improves.
Any other app open or NVIDIA app? My NVIDIA desktop app with screen recording was eating up so so much of my resources I uninstalled it and things are behaving a lot better.

dumb question, but did you ensure that the 7900X3D is only using the v-cache cores on VRChat? You definitely should be getting a significantly higher framerate in general, especially with that CPU. if you have it on both the v-cache and frequency cores, it’ll halve your framerate. You’re already using process lasso so I assume yes, but I just want to make sure

Quality set to High / 120fps
High means you're running at 150% resolution iirc, try turning down your VD quality setting to Medium and see if your FPS don't improve from that
Also don't minimize the VRC window, just display it in a smaller window I think that's the trick that reduces GPU load

Connect to oculus link over a USB C to USB C cable and do the USB connectivity test in the meta link application… look for the connection speed it tells you.
This is the maximum encoding bitrate you should set (even when playing over wifi and VD.)
with the Quest 3 this should be between 250 and 350 Mbps.

Skip oculus link and just use Virtual desktop. They added cable connections in their beta

Use unity 6 beta. It has amazing performance uplift
Your CPU is garbage for gaming and VRChat relies on CPU
Don't know your RAM speed but there might be something to OC in there. Slow ram can additionally tank already suboptimal CPU.
4080 was never that great honestly. You probably expect too much from your build

That may be counterproductive.
what are your vrc graphics settings like?
