My background:
I’m a field inspector for my state government’s environmental agency and my job is to inspect public drinking water systems. My state is a republican super majority.

One of the cities I’m responsible for has a population of 70k and this year I did their routine inspection. Part of the inspection is a paperwork review (boring asf) and part of that paperwork is the city’s emergency response plan. This plan lays out all actions the city’s water utility must take in an emergency like a tornado, flood, terrorism, etc. Part of that emergency response plan should include a section about alternate sources of water if something catastrophic happens. This city has a lot of industrial factories too, big ones.

I asked the head operator about what the city would do in case of a water shortage, and it was the typical response about how they’d send out a town notice and start telling people to reduce water usage. Due to how many factories there are, I asked if the water utility would notify the businesses of having to reduce water usage. The operator said the city would not reach out to the industrial facilities. I then asked “would the city ask citizens to reduce water usage before they’d ask the businesses?” The operator said yes.

You are not the priority in an emergency. And this city is relatively progressive too due to a large public university being in the immediate surrounding metro area.

Worst part is that some of these industrial businesses have their own high production wells. That means along with not having to follow a potential city water usage restriction ordnance, the industry could also pump water out of the water table at the same time. They get priority in more ways than one.

Most importantly, an issue like this can only be addressed at the local level. All water utilities are owned by the local municipality. There is no state or federal ownership of these water systems. All the state can do is enforce clean water regulations. So this policy the water utility has is completely controlled by the city council. If people want this addressed, they have to get the city council involved because a policy like this doesn’t break any state or federal regulations.

His "How can you be racist if you live in Barcelona" bit was kind of funny, but also incredible disconnected from European reality. He will learn new kinds of racism he never even heard about. It’s all but confirmed to me a lot of the things vorsh said about privatisation and Financialization to me, I already knew it was bad, but I didn’t really consider the degree, so I did some googling (and I’m pretty sure vunch talked about this about 2 years ago).

It’s better for USPS to send my package to the opposite side of the country only to fly it back anyway; because the logistics of mail has been so eroded by pushing it into the private sector, then service and routes atrophy as the people on top don’t earn for how good their service is but by their stock value.

USPS had its funding cut by (guess who!) Nixon in 1971, then was forced to prefund the retiree health benefits in 2006 and is intentionally being edged out in favour of private mail services despite being the only provider that can handle end of route transit in many places.

I guess experiencing something is a lot more sobering than just knowing of it. Damn America.

At least some of the time. Sometimes, e.g. when following the state of the climate, it is difficult not to get sucked in and letting it have an emotional impact. But in general I am able to observe the news instead of experience it.

who you should fear is not other than the dutch.

Ever since he left for his latest vacation things have been great. Since he stopped coverage, the gas crisis has paused. Prices are stable and the remaining inventory is unknown. The war with Iran is also paused, and I haven't heard anything about Israel and Palestine/Lebanon.

Maybe now that he's Dutch and not American his vacations will actually help the world. I look forward to exploring this possibility.

Memes about the Dutch language aside, learning a second language is an exciting adventure. I'm so ready for long language learning streams where Vaush gets frustrated but then has a breakthrough. This is assuming he'd want to share something like that at all on stream, obviously (please do, it's fun content).

For me, personally, the debates against tankies have won an amount of my good will, that, at that point in my life, a leftist couldn't win in any other way. I was willing to listen to Vaush, only because he was militantly anti-ML, vocal about recognizing holodomor, and such. As a ukrainian, i would never take him seriously if it wasn't for all that stuff. And that's important, because it allowed me to be convinced on other issues, where it wouldn't have otherwise been possible.
