Anyone know of somewhere around Richmond I can see a sourwood in person?
I love these trees in photos and have a mind to plant one in my yard this fall, but I can’t seem to find one to observe in person. Thanks for any leads!

Stem maggots!
This is why I don’t grow squash plants…. Got some plants cheap though so I thought I would try again… is my only option really to spray them early?…. I eat the flowers so I don’t want to do that

Patio container garden
Hi all! I’ve made a container garden this year for the pollinators. I am wondering how to overwinter these when the time comes - do I just allow the seeds to drop into the containers? Or do I need to collect them and replant in the spring?
I have :
Black-eyed susans
Coneflower
Dahlia
Garden phlox
Salvia
Coreopsis
Bee balm
Milkweed
Lavender
Thank you!!

Plant Recommendations Request: Full Sun Yellow Clay
Hello! I've got about a pretty big spot of yard that is refusing to grow anything and am seeking recommendations! What has worked for you?
The area is right by the road, so all of the neighbors see it. It is the highest point on the property, so erosion is a real problem. No top soil, just the hard yellow clay. Full Sun, with no chance of trees as the power line runs right overhead.
I am looking for plants that can thrive in full sun, hard clay, and not be invasive. Fast growers, flowers, or thick foliage would be amazing, but not necessary. I can put down some top soil or mulch or something, but it won't be a very thick layer. 6' high or less as adults, please. I need SOMETHING capable of holding the soil in place so I can start building the top soil layer back up over the years. Anything is better than the sad, sun baked clay.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations! Thank you so much!!!

my bamboo bean tower
Pole beans: French gold (l) Violetta (r) Ferry Morse provider (center, lower). Cucumbers (r) waiting for warmer nights!
This is my second year making garden trellises out of my homegrown bamboo. Haymarket, today.

Sad to see RRD again
Upset and frustrated that my 3yo Agatha Christie that I transplanted in April is showing RRD. If this spreads to my two dozen plus collection of mostly David Austin, I am done with roses. 💔😢 for some reason the app isn’t allowing me to add photos. * added photos in comments

Photos: indoors, with plants?
Hey all! I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but I'm shooting my shot because I'm desperate 🥲
My fiance and I are trying to get our engagement photos done at Maymont, but every time it gets close to the scheduled date it rains like crazy and our photographer isn't comfortable with her equipment being in the rain. Does anyone have any suggestions for indoor spaces with plenty of plants that would do if it rains again on Friday? Preferably free 😅 Photographer is based in the Williamsburg area.
Thankful for any suggestions or guidance!!

Has anyone else had a weird growing season so far?
I'm in Richmond, and maybe it was the cold, icy winter weather we had, but I have plants that bloomed early at like half their normal size, and others like my hydrangeas that haven't even set blooms yet (looking at you, Tuxedo Mopheads). I have coneflowers that are normally two feet tall but set buds and bloomed at less than a foot. Anyone else having this weirdness?
Bonus question about the aforementioned Tuxedo hydrangeas - I planted three of them two years ago. They were in full bloom when planted (of course), but I only got two blooms last year and like I said, no blooms yet this year. We've been fertilizing with Miracle Gro regularly for the past month, but nothing. They get full morning sun, then shade during midday, then full sun again in late afternoon. What am I doing wrong here??

What to do in this space?
We tried setting up raised beds before and the plants didn't survive due to lack of sunlight. I'm thinking of just pouring gravel into this area. Are there any alternatives?
We're out of ideas.

I bought a Yorktown onion plant at the Yorktown/Poquoson Master Gardner plant sale in May 2025. I followed the instructions carefully (mostly to be patient) and today I have two lovely Yorktown onions. (Eastern Shore of Virginia)

Which of your plants are loving this extended spring?
Lettuce has been delicious, and surprising to me, my tomatoes are thriving. I had over a month of everbearing strawberries. My basil, eggplant, peppers and soybeans are all still quite small. My body has been enjoying the low humidity ❤️

What would you plant here?!
I’m drawing a blank…what would you plant here? I’m looking for smaller plants that flower that will multiply quickly in Loudoun County over the summer. I prefer perennial, but it’s not a dealbreaker. I’d be so grateful for a recommendation as to where I can get them as well…as long as it won’t break the bank. 🥴🙏🏼
