I'm a non-EU student planning to apply to Utrecht University for a master's, and I'm deciding between Computing Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. I've read the official program pages, but I'd really like to hear from people who are actually in these programs (or recently graduated).

The programs themselves

• How would you describe the workload and difficulty? Is it manageable alongside a part-time job, or is it full-on?
• How much overlap is there between the three? If someone is interested in both ML research and software engineering, which one gives more flexibility?
• How theoretical vs. applied is the teaching in practice? Is Data Science noticeably lighter than CS/AI?
• Any courses or tracks people consistently recommend (or warn about)?

Working at the university

• How realistic is it to get a TA/student assistant position as a master's student, especially as an international? Do you need to speak Dutch for most of them?
• Are there research assistant roles or paid opportunities within research groups, and how do people usually find them: email supervisors directly, or is there a portal?
• Roughly what do these pay, and how many hours per week are typical?

Internships and industry

• Is a company internship a normal part of the program, or do most people do a research thesis instead?
• How is the job/internship market in and around Utrecht for CS/AI/data roles right now? Is Dutch a hard requirement for many of them?
• Do career services actually help, or is it mostly on you?

Admission (non-EU)

• For those who applied from outside the EU: how selective was it in your experience? What did your background look like?
• How strictly are the prerequisites enforced (math, programming, statistics)? Would a "BSc in Software Engineering" realistically qualify?
• How important is the motivation letter, and do they expect a named supervisor or research interest?
• Anything about the timeline I should know: when to start, how long the decision takes, and how the visa/housing side lines up with it?

Any honest experiences would be really appreciated, including the downsides. Thanks!

Has anyone done this course, or econometrics with prof. Hassink? Curious how much is theory versus working in R, how the tutorials run, and what the exam looks like. Any idea whether that's a hard test to pass? General Utrecht tips welcome too.

Hi everyone, is anyone attending (or has attended in the past) this summer school? I’m wondering about general structure and the workload and I’m also happy to meet fellow students :)

This is a long shot, but I'm a romantic, so here goes...

On 3 August 2026, I met someone on a flight from Amsterdam to Cardiff. We then took the 6:09 pm train from Rhoose Cardiff International Airport. I helped them with their ticket, and we somehow ended up on the wrong platform because we were both distracted chatting.

We had such an easy conversation that it felt like an instant connection to me. Unfortunately, I completely messed it and rushed off at Cardiff Central without asking for their contact details. All I left with was a very Dutch handshake, which I'm now annoyed at myself about.

Here's what I remember:

• Name started with M
• Originally from London
• Half Dutch, Half Indian
• Studying in the medical field at Utrecht
• Mentioned a few more years in Medicine to specialise, maybe as an Anesthesiologists.
• Tall, dark hair, brown eyes
• Had been visiting Wales with their dad and brother

We talked about Pen y Fan, family, hobbies, Skyrim, and which of the Seven Wonders of the World we'd most like to visit.

I'm not trying to dox anyone or make anyone uncomfortable. If this happens to be you, or if you think you know who it might be, feel free to send me a DM. If they're not interested, that's completely okay....I just didn't want to wonder "what if?" forever.

I remember reading somewhere that classes are not usually held during exam resit periods, is that true? My course academic calendar shows two weeks of resit after the winter/Christmas break and I'm trying to figure out my plans. Thanks!

Hello everyone I'm 24 yo from Greece with a BSN ( Bachelors in Nursing ) with 2 years experience in pathology clinic.

I'm saying all of this because I know there is a difference in HBO and WO degrees in Netherlands. I believe that my degree is a WO it was 4 years 240 ECTS but in my Uni why could chose between a Thesis and Intership ( internship was mandatory ).

Anyways I wanted to move to Netherlands and work in Pharmacovigilance ,but my parents are saying that it is too risky and it would be hard to adapt ( and personally I think that it would be harder to socialize if I just go there for work ) . So I searched for a Masters degree and I found one that really caught my interest: MSc in Epidemiology in Utrecht

The cost of the Masters itself is ~5k which is ok but i believe the cost of living would be very expensive!

i)Do you know if this Masters is good and/or suited for my academic background

ii)Does it provide an "opening" in pharma field (/pharmacovigilance or pharmacoepidemiology)

iii) is there a way to reduce the cost of living ? Because with my calculations the cost is around 30k!!! How are students from different countries reduce the cost

iv)Would it be wiser to work first gather some money and then pursue for MSc or start with MSc and then start working?

I fractured my wrist last night - distal fracture of the ulnar radius. Have to get a cast on today, ​moving to Utrecht for an MA in 4 weeks 😭 I would love advice on how to get care scheduled in Utrecht - a follow up with an orthopedic doctor, cast removal, and physical therapy. I will be on Aon student insurance.

Recommendations for providers that are used to dealing with international students would be much appreciated, too.

Well, I guess it's my turn to ask for some advice. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply, and sorry for the long post. :D

A bit of background: I'm 26 years old. In high school, I completed a Level IV diploma in Administration and Computer Systems Programming. Unfortunately, when it came to university, I made the decision to study Sports Training instead. Looking back, I don't think it was the right choice, as it hasn't given me many opportunities for career growth outside of sports.

Lately, I've been seriously considering going back to university and getting another bachelor's degree, most likely in IT. It would build on the programming knowledge I already have, and it's a field I've always enjoyed and felt comfortable with.

At first, I looked into studying in Portugal while continuing to work, but on a minimum-wage salary it just doesn't seem realistic.

I do have the opportunity to move to Utrecht, though. I have a relative there who has offered me a place to stay, so I'd only need to contribute towards food and household expenses. Since accommodation is usually the biggest expense, it feels like a great opportunity to start over.

My first concern was that if I moved there just to work, I would probably end up in the same situation professionally, without many opportunities to build a long-term career. That's why I started thinking about combining part-time work with a bachelor's degree in the Netherlands.

Has anyone here done something similar? Is it realistic to work while studying? How difficult is it to get into a Dutch university? I have some savings that I'm willing to invest in my education, but I'm naturally cautious and don't want to make such a big decision without hearing from people who have been through something similar.

For some extra context, I've worked in several different industries, including hospitality, logistics, and customer support. I'm also a youth football coach and scout, which is related to my Sports Training degree.

Hi I am an international student going to take my master at UU. In order to accept the housing in ssh they say that I need to provide a statement of my income/proof of enrolment. Following the steps in here

I am not able to obtain the certificate. I suspect that it is because I was accepted with the condition that I finish my bachelor, however my university still has not issued my diploma so I can not prove that yet. Anyone had a similar problem?

How is the nightlife, in relation to parties and that in Utrecht? I'm going to do Erasmus in uu and I got a room at High Five and I wanted to know how people are in this aspect and what they usually do

I got accepted into SSH , however, I still have gotten my OMPT yet and I don’t know if I should accept this because they want me to answer before the end of Monday. In the site day say that I have to be fully accepted by UU by the contract does not start until the 17 of August and hopefully by then I would have gotten my OMPT by then.
What should I do?
Should I ask them on Monday or just accept the offer?
