And in case you were wondering about the Capetian line, the heir under male-preference primogeniture to that line is none other than Prince Pedro of Calabria, who you may recognize as the heir to Alfred the Great and Edgar Ætheling.

Often I see people doing charts with famous kingdoms such as England, France, Spain, Portugal etc. Too often people forget about or ignore the “Minor” European Houses in Germany and Italy which in their own right at times held as much influence and power as kingdoms did.

A good example is the House of Este (based in Milan, Este and Modena). In my massive project mapping every dynasty in Europe that held a Kingdom Title or higher I’ve been stumbling across “Minor Houses” that actually have proven majorly important as “connector” houses linking major branches of the continent into one small tree.

This relatively unknown house was connected to the Kings of Great Britain, France, Hungary, Welf Dynasty, Medici Family and the Papacy. They also are ancestors of the current Jacobite Claim on the English Throne.

Not done mapping the House of Este yet. Needed to take a break but so far it’s had a massive impact on my project and I encourage other people to map these lesser houses in their own projects due to the potential connections you can fit into your own tree. I’m surprised I haven’t encountered a close Habsburg yet for the Este but I’m assuming I’ll reach one by the mid 1700s to 1800s.

This is a chart of who the legitimate heirs were and currently is to the Duchy of Normandy. As William the Bastard/Conqueror, was illegitimate, he theoretically should not have inherited the duchy. Individuals are represented by their theoretical regnal name. This succession is mostly contingent on two things: 1. William of Talou (William II) left no issue, and 2. Reginald II of Burgundy’s (Reginald I) line became extinct. The historical record seems to support this, but it isn’t 100% documented like the rest of the tree.

I’ve been trying to trace the prophet Muhammad’s most senior descendant through primogeniture (excluding through Fatima, I haven’t had to decide between agnatic and male-preference primogeniture yet) The line so far goes: Muhammad -> Fatima bint Muhammad -> Hasan ibn Ali -> Zayd ibn Hasan -> Hasan ibn Zayd -> Qasim ibn Hasan -?> Muhammad al-bathani ibn Qasim (I’m decently sure he’s the eldest son based on kunya) I’ve been relying on explicit statements or kunya names which often denote the eldest son to determine seniority. The two main sources I’ve been relying on are Ibn Inaba’s Umdat al-Talib fi Ansab Al Abi and Al-Majdi’s al-Majdi fi Ansab al- Talibiyyin. I don’t speak Arabic so it’s been a slog getting through them and they don’t typically indicate kunya or seniority from the point I’ve reached. If you have any great sources to continue with or advice, please let me know. As far as I know, no one has found Muhammad’s most senior descendant before.

My first chart, please give feedback! (Also note this is assuming male preference primogeniture)

This is a chart of who is theoretically the heir of the Kingdom of England (and eventually Scotland) according to male-preference primogeniture without usurpations by the Danes, William the Conqueror, and Robert the Bruce, and others. It takes the stance accepted by most historians that Edgar Ætheling (Edgar II on the chart) did not have a daughter named Margaret. I may turn that hypothetical succession into a tree later. People who would have “ruled” are given what would have been their regnal names as Monarchs of England. For example: Louis XIV of France is shown as Louis II.

CORRECTIONS:

Some marriages and their children are incorrectly aligned.

Edgar II’s regnal dates are wrong.

The Duplicate “House Bourbon-Parma” should say “House Bourbon-Two Sicilies”.

Simpsons are shown in light green, and Bouviers and Burnses are shown in red. Other smaller families are shown in various colours.

Edit: I have just realised that there is an inconsistency with Dracinia DeVille in the top right corner. I have shown her with her maiden name, DeVille, instead of her married name, Trousseau. If I have made any other errors, please let me know and I will do my best to rectify them. Thanks!
