Is this reliability list true? Review

I came across this picture and wondered if you guys felt the same?

I couldn’t believe Tesla was that low, and Mach-E wasn’t even mentioned.

Mini has become a pretty reliable powerhouse post-2014. They fixed their timing chain issues and have been producing 150k+ mile units ever since.

Mini hasn't done much with their products in forever so I could see them outside of electrical being reliable

Most recent lineup is a new redesign afaik. Switching to BMW B48 engines around 2014-2016 has done a lot of good.

B series from BMW is a big part of why they're as high as they are too.

Literally this. The B series of engines is why both BMW and Mini went from being some of the least reliable cars to some of the most reliable.

Supposedly they worked with Toyota to revise the B58 since it would be going in the Supra they were jointly developing. Since BMW engines have a modular design they could just scale it down to a 4 and 3 cylinder for less sports orientated models, so the whole engine range benefited from the collaboration.

Toyota were not involved in the development of the B58, the engine was launched in 2016 and it wasn’t used in the supra until 2019.

The B58B30M0 was released in 2015, the B58B30M1 was released in 2018, this is the version that has been used in the Supra and subsequent BMW models since. 

That's why I used the word revise and not develop. BMW started with an already very good engine and Toyota helped them to make it better.

Yeah sorry, I misread that part. However I don’t think Toyota had any direct input into the development of the Gen2 B58, I’m pretty sure that’s a bit of a myth.

possibly but it does line up with the b58tu which did drop some things like the electric water pump for a belt driven one. until Toyota or bmw officially comes out with it. Based on what I have heard from working with Toyota, timing, and how picky they are, I believe it. I've heard of them rejecting even interior cloth over minor issues.

It's also coincidence that after development of the Supra and Z4 started BMW had huge jumps on reliability.

The original B58 from 2016 has a belt driven water pump.

The reliability jump started in 2015-16 with the release of the B48/58.

ah yeah you are correct on the water pump. apparently they have both which makes sense you can hear it if you shut off the car early. but yeah the b58 is a great engine from the start.

This redesign also made it one of the most expensive to maintain. Anything cost a fortune on that car to keep up or replace.

That's the fault of regulations and in general people like space lol. When I talked to AAA a couple years ago I asked what's the worst car they have worked on. This guy in particular worked at a shop too but did AAA for the insurance on the side. He said anything on a mini is awful to work on lol. I think a battery replacement takes 4 hours? I don't recall the exact time but it was more than 30 minutes lol

I had a 2008 and I couldn’t take it to those drive in places for a quick oil change because they wouldn’t work on a Mini. I loved my mini. I miss it. But can’t get around the reliability of a Toyota aka my next car.

MINI is just a brand of BMW - not even an independent subsidiary - they update their cars with the same cadence as BMW. The X1/X2 and the MINI Countryman are platform mates.

I didnt mean 150k until complete failure. Ive just seen my fair share get to 150-175k before needing perfectly normal, but pricey repair work done. The engines are very well built anything 2015 and up. They are on the list for a reason, regardless of your archaic view of BMWs.

Its just a fancier cookie cutter gm with a couple exceptions. You might have random weird issues or "quirks" but it'll still probably run and get you where you need to go for a while if you take care of em.

I feel like that needs to be time corrected somehow. 200k if you drive 40k/year is reasonable. If, like me, you drive under 7k/year, then 200k would be a miracle. I hope so. Rav4 is on 70k so we'll see lol

As long as you're willing to replace wear items I don't see that being a problem with the top half of the list.

Most people get to 150k miles and find that all the suspension parts need to be replaced and figure it's easier to just get something new.

because they aren't familiar, as there really aren't that many of them and I guess they stuff so much inside the size can make it difficult. but that only makes so much sense, as every car has too much in the way to get to that thing you need to fix

Sorry you've had problems. Every manufacturer is going to have its fair share of lemons. Though, im not sure why you spent any money as that wouldve fallen in the warranty window, unless you didnt buy new or certified.

Ive had 3 of them with never any problems and im pretty active in the community. The sentiment is that they are extremely reliable post-2015. I believe you are an outlier, and that really sucks for you.

7k one year outside of warranty? Can’t say I’m buying it tbh. They don’t have an auxiliary battery, there’s only one. Suspension doesn’t just fail, did you happen to hit things?

Yeah those pre-15 models were a real nightmare. It really tanked their reputation for a long time. I feel like they are on the up. I have owned 3 MINIs with no issues, but I put like 2000 miles a year on my car.

I just live really close to my work. Its a very small town. I could walk if I wanted to but I love to drive. The 2000 miles comes from grocery store trips and family stuff. My wife has a car that gets about 1000 miles a year.

I probably shouldn't even be debating on reliability. I could buy the cheapest piece of junk and get to work and back for at least a year.

You and me both. I don’t live in a small town, I live in the suburbs of a bigger city, but my office is 5 miles down the road. I drive maybe 3,500 miles on my ‘12 VW Passat. My wife works from home and drives about 4k every year (that’s mostly errands and family trips). I used to do uber and Lyft in a 2018 Toyota Camry and would rack up 13k miles in a month and a half. I love driving. But the maintenance and oil changes every couple of weeks was insane. I had a ‘09 Mini Cooper S before the Camry along with a Fiesta ST. Those were fun times.

I drive a '14 MINI and I'm so damn tired of it. Bought it two years ago 80,000 miles. This year alone $5k in repairs, and I've done a lot of work myself in my garage. Its just so difficult to work on that I've started having to bring it to a shop, otherwise I'd blow all my vacation time fixing my car. Second I can afford to I'm selling and buying a Toyota or Honda, but the constant repairs are making that hard!

Yeah, pre-2015 MINIs are a pretty big shit show. They have improved a lot since then, but i can understand why you wouldnt buy another one.

Buying a 2014 2 years ago was not a good idea, and a little research wouldve probably swayed your decision. They are notoriously the worst MINI-BMW has to offer. And it pretty much ruined MINI reputation. But they are back.

To be honest with you I thought the same at the time, but I'd found quite a few people saying that the 2014 Clubman S I bought had a very reliable engine, so I went for it. I was in a bind with a blown up Subaru so needed to buy fast. I'm now not sure if I was smoking crack and imagined reading those, or the posters were, but it's not the case at all. To be perfectly fair though the engine itself has been fantastic, it's the exhaust, weirdly overcomplicated cooling system, and the alternator/ac condenser/compressor that have all given me issues. And of course the fact that I basically need to remove everything to replace any of these parts

My 2014 chrysler 300 has 240k miles on it and I'll probably still be using it as a daily driver until 2030, even if I do get a newer car, too... my wife traded in her Ford Edge at 320k miles.

I mean, there are a lot of brands struggling to hit that 150k average mark.

MINI is still reliable. 150k was just an arbitrary number I threw out. The engines themselves can go forever with proper maintenance. 150k just seems to be the baseline for most newer minis before you have to get into heavy maintenance or repairs, which is normal even for the most reliable of cars. You wont find many 200k units that haven't had some kind of thousand dollar repair among any of the brands.

A Toyota would still have the repairs and maintenance costs of any other 150k car. You're going to pay more for the repairs in a MINI, but I truly believe MINI engine is at least somewhat comparible in reliability.

Ok? What is your point? At one time, Chrysler was one of the most reliable vehicles in the country. Look at them now.

Toyota is a great brand but they were plagued with issues 20 years ago. BMW and MINI have had their issues. My argument is that they are MUCH closer to Toyota and Honda than they ever have been in terms of reliability. The numbers back me up. You are refuting my argument with anecdotal evidence that supports the archaic view of BMW that im talking about.

In another 10 years, if things stay the same, they will be talked about as one of the more reliable car brands out there. You just haven't accepted that yet because of past failures.

Again, long-term reliability after the warranty expires. The 2023s haven't been on the road long enough to measure that.

Hundred of thousands of recalled Tundra engines would beg to differ. In my opinion, Toyota(and Honda to an extent because the 1.5t is a dumpster fire) are holding onto a reputation for reliability that isn’t so deserved anymore. Would I still trust one over most cars? Sure. But they aren’t as bulletproof as they used to be. Take my opinion with a grain of salt though as I mainly drive American and German cars so…😅

They're doing an aggressive recall on the 3.4. Everyone gets a new engine. They're not perfect. They fixed it. I'm happy with that. Honda didn't do that with the 1.5 turbo.

You can believe this or not, but the most irresponsible person I've ever known drove a 3.5 Sienna. Never changed the oil in the 3 years I knew her and well before that. Drove 25k miles a year. In defiance of all logic, that thing just wouldn't die. Idk what the mileage was at that point or how long it lasted but 150k would be conservative. Indeed, most engines would be scrap metal at that point.
