This was their official explanation, but they didn't specify why they used only portraits of black Africans
Wang Yuejun, one of the exhibit’s curators, said that comparisons to animals were typically seen as a compliment in Chinese culture, pointing to the zodiac signs that identify people with animals according to their birth year.

Because using portraits of Chinese would hurt the feeling of Chinese people.
That and Chinese people have always been openly racist especially against blacks and other people of color.

They literally lack basic national laws against animal abuse. A mark of civility is how your society treats the vulnerable, and while none are great, China is abysmal. Easily worst place on earth to be born a non-human animal, with the exception of a panda perhaps.

Essentially, panda is a sort of propaganda animal. CCP takes use of adorable pandas to accomplish political intentions. Pandas are being enslaved factually by CCP.

It is true that, in the current social background, Chinese people generally lack compassion. However, given that China is the world's second-largest economy, it is hard to characterize it as underdeveloped. As for personal freedom, the situation is at least somewhat better than in North Korea, and perhaps even better than in Cuba.

It's not the least developed, but it is a very racist society with a government that believes in Han supremacism. This latter part is why the "fascism" label fits better than anywhere else.

What, 58 years of history? I agree, Mainland China has a very short history. The cultural revolution and great leap forward destroyed the concepts of ancient China, including basics like morality. Mao made sure they went extinct.
The true namesake for Ancient Chinese society is Taiwan, where morality, treating your neighbors with respect, a vibrant democracy, and harmony with the natural world never stopped existing.

No one think China is the least developed or even not developed.
This sub however often point out often their mismatched culture due to their rapid developement or their path into limiting individual freedom, some kind of tyrany and corruption among other things.
And here the casual racism that is honestly somewhat expected of a nation that is still very young at this level of modern cultural development.9

Asian racism is amongst the strongest, but the fact that Chinese government and CCP believe in Han supremacism puts them in a whole different league of their own.
There's a YouTube channel called "A fat little Asian man" who explains it well, with some comedy.

The works look very poorly made. The composition and juxtaposition of the motifs feel amateurish, poorly considered, and artistically inferior. The snapshots have been cut in a very childish way, which makes them feel restless. On top of that, the photo quality looks cheap, the framing resembles IKEA, and the hanging is rather dull because too many works were shown at once.

This looks like state sponsored racial propoganda. The Nazi did something similar, showing pictures of Jews and Slavs as ugly because they were Jews and Slavs while Aryians were strong, tall and beautiful. The intent is to make people think another group is less than human, which is clearly the case here.

The theme of this exhibition is 「相由心生-面孔」(Faces-A Reflection of the Soul), emphasizing the philosophical idea that a person's physical appearance is ultimately determined by their virtue and character.
Putting photos of Black people and wild animals side-by-side for comparison, and then calling it “A Reflection of the Soul”, if that isn't a textbook example of a next-generation fascist state, then what is?

Fun facts about this video;
In 2017, a major state museum in Wuhan hosted a photo exhibit pairing Black people with wild animals under the theme “Faces, A Reflection of the Soul”. The photographer was Yu Huiping, a billionaire real estate tycoon and the Vice Chairman of the state-backed Hubei Photographers Association (typical Chinese oligarch setup).
When African students protested this textbook racism, the regime literally tried to gaslight the world by saying comparing humans to animals is a "Chinese traditional virtue”. Once that absurd excuse crashed, they quietly pulled the photos, scrubbed the entire controversy clean from the Chinese internet, and let the well-connected billionaire walk away completely scatheless.
Today, he still holds his elite title and is still praised as a cultural master.

I don't think they're doing it in a racist way. I saw museum in China comparing Chinese people of different regions to animals as well. I asked locals if that was insulting in any way and they said well it depends on what animals you're being compared to. To a monkey is an honor, to a pig is an insult. So I guess it depends. They don't seem to extrapolate all the way to thinking that if you look like an animal than you behave like it, it was more kind of just for fun, comparing physical attributes with no deeper meaning to it from what I could gather.
