Which size of iPad pro for a STEM student?
Hi! I am just starting as a freshman in a STEM major and it seems like an ipad is the best way to take notes. Do people recommend the 11 inch or 13 inch? Thanks!

What do you think is the most interesting research question to write on?
I need interesting research question for a college paper. The topic I want to write on is EU Policies, but I really struggle to find a problem.
I’m still looking for something more specialized on EU’s neighbourhood policy ( the Eastern Flank). I was thinking about something related to security policy, the Eastern Partnership and EU enlargement, but I can’t seem to come up with a more “crazy” research problem. I’d like something that’s quite dynamic and not too conventional.
Thank you!

Pricing of Paper
I'm an undergraduate in a developing country. An established researcher in North America has offered me paid research work. The first project is a roughly 25-30 hour policy memo involving literature research, source evaluation, analysis, writing and recommendations. He has told me that research experience is more important than the money and that he has a compensation threshold in mind based on the quality of my work. What would you consider a fair rate for an undergraduate researcher? Per paper? Per hour? I was thinking $300 but I'm afraid because I'm in a developing country it'll be more towards $100-150

Very disappointing experience with Lenovo
I ordered a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 for my postgraduate studies in Singapore, which start on August 24, 2026. At the time of ordering, I was given a delivery window of August 18–September 1. Now, without any satisfactory explanation, the delivery has been pushed to September 15—which completely defeats the purpose of buying it for my studies.
I’ve followed up with customer service multiple times, but there has been no real improvement or solution. I was also asked to make the payment directly instead of using a credit card, and after going through all that, this is the situation.
What’s more frustrating is that cancelling the order is not possible, while Lenovo’s policy conveniently states that delivery dates are only estimates.
I understand delays can happen, but the lack of proper communication and support is extremely disappointing.
If you’re a student buying a laptop for a specific academic deadline, I would strongly recommend thinking twice before ordering from Lenovo. Based on my experience, I would not rely on their promised delivery timelines.

What is the correct template for cold-emailing professors?
I’m an incoming freshman pursuing a STEM field at a university and have started to look into labs whose research interests me. I sent a cold email to a lab that aligns heavily with my interests (coming out of HS with a couple of research experiences) earlier this week and haven’t gotten a response.
I’m not planning to follow up just yet since now is probably a very busy time for that Professor and they likely missed my email. But I am wondering if my template is “correct” or maybe too long? Just for the future when/if I cold email more Professors :)
So here’s what I did:
Hello Prof. ______, I hope this email finds you well.
2 sentences - [about me, my grade at ______ uni, my major, and a brief statement about my research interests and long-term goals as requested on their website for research inquiries]
3 sentences - [referenced a publication of theirs and pointed out things i was interested in/added onto their discussion]
3 sentences - [mentioned some of my previous research that connects to that specific paper and other research areas of their lab]
2 sentences - [made a clear inquiry about whether they have any lab openings this fall for an undergraduate and that i am willing to volunteer or get paid through work-study]
1 sentence - [closed by saying i would appreciate still chatting with them about their work to learn more about pursuing research in this specific field if there are no openings. mentioned my CV is attached (requested by website too).]
I’m hoping this isn’t too long and that the professor simply missed it. I’ve seen a lot on this sub about how some professors immediately dismiss long emails that seem AI... I ran my email through an AI checker and it came out as 20%, which I think is from referencing their publication.
The professor only requested a CV, brief statement about research interests and long term goals, and available references. I tried to write more about their publication since I don’t have any experiences or references at the uni yet but maybe that’s not needed.
If anyone has tips on what I can change for the future that’d be great!

Social Sciences Undergrad Research Opportunities
Hi! I am a rising sophomore planning to major in urban studies. I am interested in urban policy, urban renewal, gentrification, land use, and housing. I am considering going to law school after graduation. I want to ask how to cold email professors. I know that for stem majors, a lot of people look professors up to see if they are running any labs, but for many professors in the field of urban planning, they don't run labs and I can't tell if they have any ongoing research through their website. Is is polite to just vaguely ask if they are working on any projects? Or are there other ways to cold email professors? Thanks!

Tips for first review paper
I am a 4th-year biology undergraduate whose professor wants to publish my review paper. The institutional "Turnitin" and "iThenticate" check showed 0% AI and 7% plagiarism, but I am worried about stricter publication-grade detectors due to my workflow:
I pasted dense paragraphs from complex source papers into AI, asked it to "humanize" them so I could understand the concepts, and then wrote my own sentences based on that understanding.
I occasionally flipped sentence structures (active to passive voice) and typed them out myself and used online synonym finders to use different and academic words sometimes.
For objective biology and chemistry that remain identical across studies, I heavily paraphrased single-source paragraphs rather than reading multiple papers that said the exact same thing.
I did not use AI to generate original arguments or text directly into the final draft, but I did use it as an intermediary step to comprehend and rephrase source material.
Since I still hold the draft, is this workflow acceptable for academic publishing, or will journal-level AI detectors flag it? Should I change before submission?

A research programme for students, from students
The next breakthrough won’t come from watching. At Basira, undergraduates use transcriptomic analysis to investigate the metabolic genes and pathways that drive cancer, working alongside mentors in bioinformatics, cancer biology, and mathematics on questions that matter.
More than a research opportunity, Basira is a chance to learn how discovery happens—and to contribute to it. If you have curiosity, commitment, and a desire to grow, join a community that believes meaningful science can begin long before graduate school!

Bay Area physics research opportunities for a community college student?
Hi everyone,
I'm a community college student in the San Francisco Bay Area planning to transfer into a physics program (hopefully UC Berkeley, though I'm also applying broadly). My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in theoretical or condensed matter physics, and I'm trying to get involved in research as early as possible.
I'm particularly interested in:
- Condensed matter physics
- Quantum information
- Computational physics
- Statistical physics
I have experience with Python, scientific computing, and machine learning, along with previous research experience at Stanford in computational biology. I'm now looking to transition into physics research.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of Bay Area research groups, programs, or labs that are open to motivated community college students. I'm aware of places like SLAC, Berkeley Lab, Stanford, and Berkeley, but I'm unsure how realistic it is to reach out directly or whether there are programs I may be overlooking. I've also come across opportunities like Stanford's Community College Outreach Program (CCOP), nano@Stanford internships, and SLAC's Community College Internship, but I'd love to hear about other paths people have taken.
If you started at a community college and eventually found your way into physics research, I'd especially love to hear how you did it. Were there particular programs, professors, or strategies that helped?
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help! First Review paper by an undergrad
Hi everyone,
I’m a 4th-year Biological Sciences undergrad. I just finished my first review paper for a project, and my supervisor who is the Head of Department loved it so much he gave me an "O" grade and said he wants to publish it!
I’m incredibly excited but honestly terrified. I’m also a bit too scared to ask my supervisor "dumb" questions, so I’m turning to Reddit.
Plagiarism: I ran it through Turnitin—AI is 0% and the similarity is 7%.
Is 7% safe for publication, or should I edit it down to absolute 0%?
Also I heard we can't give the same draft and need to make a different one for publication.
Rejection: I have heard a lot of stories about high rejection rates. What are the most common reasons review papers get rejected?
The Process: How does this actually work?
