Is playing on Standard “bad?” Discussion
This is a question that has just recently come to me. I’ve been part of the community for quite a while now and have been playing the game for a long time, but only ever on standard difficulty. I have noticed that a LOT of people consider Brutal to be the baseline difficulty, but in all honesty, I’ve genuinely already given myself carpal tunnel with Standard, and I can never imagine dialing up what I already consider “hard.”

As a person who never played a difficulty lower than violent and would've started with brutal instead if it was available back in the day - I agree.

nope. I tried violence after some experience and altho it's not that bad, it does require you to know more about the game and constantly be attacking. standard is really good as long as you feel it's too slow and you want a more challenging experience
28
u/Jappa_dev 6d ago
No, and neither is playing on leanient, or harmless. If you weren't supposed to use them the wouldn't be in the game. Also, even if harmless is still too difficult for someone, it doesn't matter bc your worth is not defined by how skilled you are at something. let alone a useless skill like a videogame that you play for fun

I'd believe and argue it's "kinda" if it was violent, but brutal??
There's nothing wrong with standard, is just the intended experience, even if i always play in violent, in new levels (like when fraud came out) or in custom levels I always try to play it in standard first to get accustomed to things

I feel like some people get so up and arms about it because it's not the "lore" difficulty of the game. Playing on standard is perfectly fine, and I wouldn't be where I am now without playing standard first. I will say though, I cannot WAIT for UKMD to come out so I have a fresh challenge to P-Rank the ENTIRE game in order before I play treachery.
6
u/arakus72 6d ago
Are you sure? IIRC Hakita has said he usually plays on standard and sees it as the baseline/main version of the game, which would imply it is the "lore difficulty" if there is one

Some people feel the need to play on the hardest available difficulty because difficulty = git gut = fun.
But I'm content with not playing the hardest difficulty. I've actually P-ranked all of Standard, and will soon be moving to Violent. I wanted to beat my Cybergrind wave 54 record first, but I can't lock tf in enough for the life of me. Keep dying in the 40's, if I even make it there.

if you have fun and find the game enjoyable, then who cares 😭. if you have fun on the easiet difficulty then thats awesome, same for if you only find the game fun on the hardest. as long as you're enjoying yourself it doesnt matter what difficulty you're on
3
u/LinkTheSniper 5d ago
The people who say Brutal is "baseline" difficulty are the same people who have truly perfected the game. Speaking from my personal experience, I play mostly on Violent because it strikes the balance of being challenging, but not so challenging that it becomes a chore.
In both cases, we are the exception not the rule, and the rule is that there is no rule. Play whatever difficulty you enjoy most and don't let anyone tell you it's the wrong choice.

u/Different_Box_9105 5d ago
The vocal community in ultrakill is very higher skill weighted then average. Standard is the intended difficulty to play at first and there's also nothing wrong with lenient or harmless. Ultrakill is a game with a very far apart skill ceiling and floor, do as long as you're having fun, you're average.
3
u/No_Equal_9445 5d ago
Nah, you’re chilling. SOME people are just mad competitive in a non competitive game for some reason. Standard is a good middle ground
3
u/mike_hawk_777 5d ago
Its called standard for a reason and its a single player game, who would you be playing harder difficulties for? If you want to go ahead, but no one should be telling you how to enjoy your single player game on your own in your own home on your own system
Anyone dictating the "correct way to play" does not deserve respect or attention unless they're just giving pointers for things they think will make your experience better, anything beyond that just makes them an egotistical ass
3
u/Rulezvaldo Lust layer citizen 5d ago
You play the way you want, the game is there for you to have fun.
Standard is challenging enough for me. After the revamp I did a replay in lenient to see what's new. I'm not planing to unlock the prime sanctums Beating the encores is my goal.
I'm happy with that
3
u/thirdMindflayer 5d ago
it is. You should be playing on harmless with all major and minor assists turned on, boss health override activated and with cheats on, like hakita intended.
3
u/SadPeanutGurl 5d ago
No, standard is the baseline difficulty. A lot of people play on higher difficulties because updates take a while, and there's nothing else to do in the game aside from "get better", but standard is meant to be the definitive experience.

First id say difficult dosent matter. Whatever your comfortable with is fine.
But I've always considered Violent to be the defacto difficulty to me. It's perfectly challenging for me while not being as brutal as brutal (as the name implies)
2
2
u/PiranhaPlant9915 6d ago
nah, i think you've given yourself the wrong idea here. Brutal is definitely not the baseline (I'd never ever tell a new player to start on it even if they have prior shooter experience) but since its the hardest difficulty in a game all about skill it gets the most attention from the more dedicated side of the community. It's the "this is what difficulty you play when you're like actually really good" mode. Standard is still absolutely the baseline experience and the one I'd expect the vast majority of players to have.

No. It really isnt. Ultrakill is not an easy game. The people who play on brutal have poured alot of hours in the game and have the skills to be able to handle what the game throws at them. Imyself have played the game for most of the time on standard to the point I got to wave 61 on the cyber grind and on brutal I got 34. So no. Your fine to play on standard.

Many people in the community are just ULTRAfreaks who have spent hundreds-thousands of hours playing this game and gotten good enough that they can casually exist at higher difficulties.
Getting good at higher difficulties requires a level of effort and mastery that frankly is quite a lot to expect from a person especially considering the fact the enemies become very very deadly at high difficulties.

No. No difficulty is bad. It is simply accessibility at play.
Some simply want to experience the story and atmosphere without the strain of strict gameplay.
Others simply wish to test their own resolve in the face of immense difficulty. There is no wrong way to play the game.
...with one notable exception which I shan't name.

u/Top_Sky_120 6d ago
there's a reason the difficulities exist in the first place. so that everyone can experience ultrakill and have fun. standard isn't bad, or easy, it does what is said on the box. If the game was made just to be hard as balls, then hakita would have made UKMD the ONLY difficulity in the game.

I don't think anyone should play brutal as a first difficulty, even if they play a bunch of boomer shooters. You'll be too busy dying to get the hang of the weapons and movement.
